The HfP chat thread – Monday 27th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Long time no travel. What are people putting their Euro spend on these days?

    • Rich says:

      Virgin is free for EUR.

Curve and Revolut are both zero commission during the week, 0.5% load I think at weekend.

No Amex is commission free, AFAIK.

      • Andrew says:

There are different varieties of Virgin Card though.

Mine is the Virgin Money FX free Mastercard, so zero commission on US transactions (live and online) as well as Euro.

        But no points.

    • Andy D says:

In person Euro spend, the VS Mastercard (forex free).

    • Harry T says:

Virgin for in person euro spend. Was using Curve backed by Creation for that too but obviously can’t now. Advantage of Curve is they give you the spot rate.

      • Rich says:

        What’s meant by ‘in-person’ here?

Does it only apply to chip & PIN/ contactless, and not online? Never knew that.

        • Rob says:

The Virgin card wording, to be fair, does NOT say ‘in person’. It would make sense that this was the rule, because the EU fees rule they are basing this on is only concerned with in-person charges, but whether it actually works this way or not I don’t know. I thought it was ‘in-person only’ but when I tried to find proof I couldn’t.

I made a purchase using my Virgin credti card online. There were no fees. NB – my card is not an airline points earning card.

    • David says:

This month Creation IHG, no forex fees in September and 4 points per pound.

      • Memesweeper says:

        +1 Ihg this month

routinely I use the Curvatious one, excellent rates. Occasionally Revolutionaries.

  • A says:

Random question: Does anyone know the biggest width item you can fit through LHR scanners (T3 if it makes any difference)?

    • peter says:

I flew once with pop up tent, it obviously didn’t fit (although it could diagonally) but they asked me to put it a side and went through a manual search on it.. it took a while to convince them not to open it 😀

      • A says:

Haha, yes I used to take all sorts through too 😀.
I was under the impression nowadays though, that if it doesn’t fit through, it isn’t going?
It is a framed piece of art – far too fragile to check in, and it is wider than my Tumi carry on, which of course fits through ok.

        • SteveJ says:

What will you do with it once onboard? Doesn’t sound like it’ll fit in the overhead bins, or that you’ll want to out it up there even if it did

          • A says:

With the Virgin loads to (and from) JFK right now, I suspect it could have its own seat in upper class next to mine😀
Closet will be fine – this one isn’t valuable, or particularly big – just borderline whether it’ll get through the scanners.

  • Definitas says:

Has anyone entered the US recently who has global entry? Are the kiosks still operating?

  • Tarmohamed says:

Has emirates removed the online icon which indicated reward upgrades are available?

  • James says:

Is there a way of finding out if my BA flight from MLE to LHR is a cargo run? Currently around 10 people booked on it so have my suspicions it may get cancelled.

  • Gary says:

What’s the cheapest pre-departure PCR (to Canaries) that comes back same day (doesn’t need to be 3 hours) in central London ish?

    • Anna says:

You should only need this if unvaccinated, but I think for same day Collinson isn’t too bad or there are plenty of pharmacy options.

  • TheThunderer says:

Morning. Anybody tried to a Hilton status match recently? I get a “Oops! We’ve encountered a problem. Our online registration isn’t working at the moment.” every time I try. Thanks

  • J says:

My wife and kids are flying into Heathrow T5 tomorrow around 2pm. Does anyone have an idea of what border queues are like at the moment? They’ll be queuing for the desks rather than using e-gates. I need to decide what time to arrive to pick them up. Thanks.
