The HfP chat thread – Sunday 26th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just checking, Amex Plat cover applies to car hire taken out in the name of the supp card holder right?

    • Rich says:

Yep. And any extra drivers the supp adds to their rental agreement

    • Aston100 says:

Actually, I think I found the answer:
“Comprehensive worldwide travel insurance for you, your immediate family, and your Supplementary Cardmembers and their immediate family, from the moment you book with your Card”.

I just hope that last bit “from the moment you book with your Card” doesn’t mean literally *I* have to have booked the travel/car hire using *my* main card (as opposed to the supp card holder booking the car hire in their name with their supp card).

      • Reney says:

isn’t travel insurance different to the car rental insurance?

the car rental cover is not card dependant. Someone named on the rental agreement needs to hold a plat card, whether it is main or sup doesn’t matter.

    • Rob says:

Yes (supp Plat I assume you mean, not someone with a Gold supp on your Plat)

  • Gary says:

Anyone knows any Vanguard like companies who would accept bendy with underlying CC as funding method? Vanguard used to but not anymore.

  • ianM says:

Flying from GLA Tuesday – I see the Upperdeck Lounge is listed in Priority pass as open but it’s being operated through Lomond Lounge according to GLA website – can I still access with Priority pass?

  • GaryE says:

Has anybody had any joy recently getting a retention bonus on the Amex Plat card? My annual renewal is up in 2 weeks and spoke to Brighton the other day and was offered nothing. Thanks

    • Mark says:

On retention…anybody actually pushed their luck and managed to get 2 retention bonus with few months inbetween?

      • GaryE says:

Should point out got retention bonus at renewal last October 2020 and have not asked or got a bonus since then,

      • David says:

Yup 50 k in May and 50k MR last month

        • Flyoff says:

I note lots of retention bonuses but never received one yet after many years of asking. I don’t use my Plat much as I can earn better rewards elsewhere. I assume this is why they don’t offer retention payments. Does anyone else with a few thousand pounds of transactions get retention offers?

    • Blair says:

Better to hold this and ask on a Monday morning when more people will see it. The general answer is yes and yes to follow up question below too

    • The Rooster says:

Yes I has to wait exactly 1 year after my last for them to give me a retention bonus with they did via live chat

  • KevinF says:

Hello. I have a trip London-Johannesburg-London booked with Virgin. Virgin has cancelled the return leg only (London-Johannesburg).
Does this give me the right to rebook the whole trip on dates of my choice?
Do I have to let Virgin know that I won’t take the outbound leg? (I don’t manage to reach them)
    Thanks

    • Shaw West says:

They do rebook you on the dates convenient to you. Mail to customer.solutions@fly.virgin.com with your preferred dates

    • Charlieface says:

      Yes.
      No need

Make sure to get the dates and times you want. If they don’t have then ask for another airline. If they won’t play ball on that then book it yourself and request compo later. Do NOT cancel your ticket, otherwise you get no compo

    • Munch says:

Just complete the Rebook your flight form on the website with your new dates. They replied with my new booking within 24 hours. There was plenty of availability so not sure what happens if the flights are full.

    • KevinF says:

Thanks for the feedback. Rebooking is currently possible until the end of August only. I will hold to my booking until I can rebook for the more welcoming November/December.

  • Imran says:

    @HarryT
Please can you confirm the address where you sent the letter when Virgin turned you down for a credit card. Is it the one in Wigston (LE18 9HA) or the one in Newcastle (NE3 4PL)?

    • Chas says:

In case you don’t get a reply from HarryT, I think the Newcastle one is the one to use – I used it successfully for a different issue I had with Virgin a couple of years ago.

    • Harry T says:

The Newcastle one in Gosforth is the address I’ve used both times I’ve appealed in writing (I’ve had the card twice, both times after appealing a rejection).

  • EwanG says:

Yes that’s right. The Moxy’s location is great – IMHO preferable than the other two you were considering unless you had plans near them – not so good that you were disappointed though! I’ve heard good things about the Voco and there is a Hampton and Mercure nearby which covers the main chains for next time!

    • Reney says:

Thanks! I wasn’t disappointed, probably just too old to be Moxy’s target market. I was happy with the location and slept well which is important too. Not sure when I will next visit, I wanted to use up my final Marriott free night which was expiring in Jan so was restricted to Marriott, will look at others next time.

  • Shaw West says:

Is Frankfurt LH First Lounge open? Does it have an office space where one can work?

    • The Jetset Boyz says:

Lufthansa recently closed its First lounges, only the First Class Terminal lounge is open at the moment.
