The HfP chat thread – Saturday 25th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Graham Walsh says:

Any thoughts on when BA might look to reschedule the LGW flights to leave from LHR, if at all? Or are they going to let Easyjet and others take the business?

    • ChrisC says:

I’m hoping soon as until they formally cancel the LGW flights no one can change or cancel their existing bookings for free.

I think BA MAnagement have resigned themselves to losing passengers whatever they decide to do with with the non Domestic SH routes.

My LGW flights have been to AMS. Eurostar is looking more attractive by the day.

And I I have to fly from LHR or LCY then KLM becomes an option.

    • Rob says:

Because of call centre issues, you can be pretty sure it will be done in dribs and drabs. I think the issue for BA is that, given the higher charges out of Heathrow, it won’t be able to sell as many seats as it would from Gatwick on price sensitive routes so it can’t be a straight move across.

  • Andy says:

Just tried to add my wife as a supplementary card holder to my new Amex Gold and got the message:

    “Thank You, XXXXX

We regret that we are unable to process your request to issue a card to XXXX.

We appreciate your continued Card membership”

Never had that before! has anyone else? it would have been the first supplementary on that account

  • Tom says:

After two weeks of back and forth I finally have the correct expiry on my companion voucher. Those in the same position keep at it, they do everntually fix it.
Amex now telling me if I cancel I lose my companion voucher which we all know not to be the case…..

  • Lou says:

Pro tip, don’t do your day 2 PCR test at Heathrow when you arrive…

    • Blenz101 says:

Pro tip, book a Collinson one which can be refunded 3 hours before your appointment. Book it for day 2 and cancel when you get back from the airport.

Use a free NHS test if you genuinely want to know the result.

      • David says:

        Don’t be so silly.

        • Blenz101 says:

Why? PCR tests are to be scrapped anyway and replaced by lateral flow which are widely available for free.

          • meta says:

The scrapping of PCR tests has not been confirmed and they might stay for all we know as that is only the intention. The only thing that has been confirmed is that from 4 October is no requirement to do the return to the UK test.

          • Lou says:

Well I needed to take on having just arrived into the UK. 1 hour wait…

          • CH says:

I’ve not followed this very closely, but won’t the rules change to requiring a private LFT instead of a private PCR, which will basically enable this whole wild west of misleading headline prices, just with slightly different procedures?

          • Andrew H says:

Not immediately what I read today due to lack of availability of LFT – and an NHS LFT is not useable because of traceability (I believe…)

          • Rob says:

Do we have any idea how the LFT is going to work? Will you have to pay for one (to get a code) but it is then down to you whether you use it? You can’t post it off because the line fades.

    • Lou says:

Maybe LFT but where you are tested at an official test station?

I thought the whole point of the PCR test was to track strains and their families. If we’re not doing that any more, what’s the point of replacing it with a fairly useless LFT?

  • Doommonger says:

I am booked into the Langley in early October on points, on reading recent reviews it appears that all is not well, anyone had recent experience, specifically the spa and the food and beverage offering. A fair few are recommencing the café in the park for brekkie. I am Marriott Platinum.

The diet is slow progress, I did however, manage a two mile run last weekend ( minor miracle)

    • meta says:

Sort out the upgrade via app or over the phone before arrival. Eat elsewhere for dinner. You have breakfast included with status, so why pay elsewhere. You can pay extra £6 or £8 if you want for a different breakfast (eggs benedict, etc.) instead of full English which is standard.

    • Harry T says:

I got about a one category upgrade as Titanium and a returning guest, despite asking nicely over chat a couple of times, and at check in. They were selling multiple suites and junior suites via the website too. The service is either absent or very cold. They forgot to serve me breakfast one morning and decided to serve several other people before me. Then they tried to comp me the breakfast, which was an elite benefit anyway.

Spa is great, gym is phenomenal, park is pleasant. Cafe in the park isn’t bad.

    • MJR says:

Had an amazing upgrade as platinum elite, dinner was very good and service excellent. Breakfast we had room service and as a free benefit totally recommend. Spa was impressive and service good

    • TGLoyalty says:

You get £25 each credit to use towards breakfast (continental £25 or continental & Cooked £35) don’t go elsewhere!

No issues at all with service

    • OP says:

A supervisor/manager at the Langley explained to me that an (excellent) upgrade on my most recent stay was because of not just my status but my *corporate rate*. Inquisitively asking on the ‘rate’ point I was told that they ‘don’t upgrade some of the cheaper or points rates in the same way’ but if I wished to use points in the future I should send them an email…

  • Jack says:

Does anyone know how long the BA double tier points are taking to post?

Got back from Greece Wdnesday and so far only standard 160 total are showing in my account..

    • Nick says:

A month – exactly as detailed in the T&C.

      • Jack says:

Thanks Nick, mea culpa, RTFM moment.

(Annoying though, means I’ll miss out on a BAEC bump by 2 weeks, hey ho..)

    • Rich says:

There have been a lot of reports of the points not turning up after 30 days, and then people being told to wait longer.

They’d better pull their finger out, as I only have 6 weeks between my flight and another booking where I’m counting on using Silver to avoid some hefty baggage fees!

      • Jack says:

What’s annoying is that reading the t&c’s it appears in my case the extra TP will post after the annual reset date and go straight into lifetime count (“the initial transaction will be updated”) rather than split as two separate transactions and carry over into the new TP year to at least give a headstart in the new collection year. Was hoping to get back up to Silver before booking a series of trips next year, for the same reason as you Rich!

        • ChrisC says:

TPs usually credit as the day of the flight even if they are added to your account at a later date. They will adjust it so that they credit to the correct membership year so you won’t get a headstart on your new year TPs .

BAs systems are pretty good at tracking these delayed points and adjusting status accordingly.

Once the bonus TPs post I’d wait a couple of days (as per normal processign cycle) to see if it updates your status and then if not contact BAEC

  • VickyTM says:

Thanks everyone for all the responses yesterday on the USD bank account.

  • Memesweeper says:

Long shot, but anyone know of a points/kickback option for Relevant Life insurance (that’s insurance taken out by the employer)? Alan Boswell have some likely-looking options but don’t appear to be in scope for Avios rewards.

    • Rob says:

Boswell are massively flexible – since there are people there with total authority to dish out Avios for whatever they want – so I’d drop them (it will a guy called Simon who replies) a note at avios@alanboswell.com and ask. If the commission is decent they should be able to do something.
