The HfP chat thread – Saturday 25th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Very civilised time spent in LHR Plaza Premium this morning. BA Galleries looked very crammed but I just peered through the door and pushed on to PP.

    • Craig says:

Just in Galleries now, it’s busy but OK.

    • Craig says:

1030 and it’s like a zoo in Galleries South.

      • Nick says:

Plaza lounge was horrible last week. Cheapskate drinks, totally miserable staff, lots of people on loud phone calls. The ‘hot’ food wasn’t actually hot, but was still tasty enough – probably better than Galleries. The sandwiches were both weird and stale.

In any case, if you’re there at 10am then the answer is always the North lounge, rather than South anyway – always has been.

      • AL says:

It was a zoo on Thursday, too. Staff trying to separate pax in to groups with moveable railings. No seats, tables needing clearing etc.

I’m booked on VS19 to SFO next Saturday, on a reduced mileage rate from Virgin’s Black Friday deals last year. I will (sadly!) be unable to travel due to the current US entry policy and have been hoping VS will cancel the flight. Although it has not operated in over 18 months, it does still appear to be scheduled for the 2nd. Wondered if HfPers had views on a) likelihood of cancellation at this stage, b) if it does operate, the chances of them allowing me to move my ticket to next year without wanting more mils (obviously it’s cancellable on the standard mileage terms but I’d much rather keep a reduced price flight…).

    • Munch says:

I was in a similar situation but my original booking was for the evening flight which was cancelled and moved to morning flight (I never accepted the change). I completed the cancellation form from the website as a cancelled flight and my flights are now confirmed for July 2022 as requested with no extra points or fees. Try completing the form as a cancelled flight and see if they’ll move the flight for no extra charges?

    • davef says:

They cancelled my Man-JFK flight for 16/9 booked in the same sale with 12 days to go and refused compensation. Cancelled the ticket, got the taxes/charges back but still waiting for the points back.

Would seem unlikely they’d cancel it at this late stage since they’re running quite a flew flights to ATL/JFK/MIA and BOS today, so you may find it starts up again this week.

      • Mark says:

They seem to be doing some weird things recently. I was tracking our flights to Seattle which up until late August were being cancelled at least 2.5 weeks ahead, one week at a time on a Friday. On the day I was expecting ours to be cancelled they weren’t but instead the first available date was pulled forward by a week and those flights then removed from sale again a day later. Our flights were eventually cancelled, but well under the two weeks notice that would have protected them from potential EC261 compensation claims.

Ours was also booked in the 50% sale. Was advised by the reservations team that they wouldn’t honour the deal on rebooked flights but raised a claim via the executive office, quoting the relevent clause from EC261 relating to the right to rebook at the customers convenience. That was then addressed to my satisfaction very swiftly.

Morning all, Virgin Credit Card Reward voucher – does the voucher holder have to be on the booking or can I use it to upgrade flights for other people?

    • Gary says:

Yes can use for others as upgrade voucher, but cardholder needs to travel if using as 2-4-1

  • TheInsiderFly says:

Anyone know how long it takes for Sainsbury’s MasterCard 10k Nectar bonus to post?

  • GJS says:

Could someone remind me if I can transfer MR points to my wife’s HH account (same surname). Appreciate that I could do a small trial transfer, but wondered if anyone knows off the top of their head. Thank you.

    • John says:

You can send MR points to your own HH account and then transfer to any other HH account for free (subject to annual limits)

    • Rob says:

Why does it matter? You could send them to her and, via Points Pooling, move up to 500k directly into your account with no fees.

      • Rich says:

Is that the easiest way of giving MRs to somebody else?

I guess you could also make them an additional collector on your Nectar account, but I don’t know if additional collectors can spend?

        • John says:

You can just order an additional card, or take a screenshot of the nectar barcode.

  • Adam says:

    Hello,

If I book a BA flight via Amex Travel (as I am getting decent IAD discount) will I still have BA book with confidence protection i.e. FTV and free date changes etc???

    Thanks in advance!

    • John says:

No, but you get an Amex BA FTV or something like that, so you have to use it through Amex who can charge you fees even though BA doesn’t charge them

      • Adam says:

        Interesting…
Was looking to book online… but may be will give a call later to confirm with travel concierge

    • Lady London says:

There are not good reports on this. The advice is generally book with BA direct.

Don’t say we didn’t tell you.

  • Mjshort says:

Singapore putting in new lock down measures from Monday for a month. Not much chance of getting there this year 😒

    • Blenz101 says:

Or anywhere in South East Asia. Compliant populations and governments who have employed lots of people to act as a taskforce to ‘fight’ covid.

Now everyone has been offered a vaccine the only option these people have left is to change up various restrictions on their population and borders.

We have years of this to come.

      • Polly says:

Supposed to transit there Oct 29th.. they changed flt time out..think it’s a no go zone.

  • Si says:

Just downloaded Airtime – Chas (the runner?), used the referral code.

Enjoy the 50p or whatever you get 🙂
