We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

FYI, seems like Chase Bank UK are sending out texts allowing you to set-up a new account

  • Andrew says:

Back in March 2020 i flew my outbound Lufthansa flight but my inbound got cancelled. I had to sort out a BA flight home to UK . Last month a credit showed up on my Ebookers account for the full amount that i paid for both flights . However i wanted the cash and asked Ebookers for a cash refund which I received from LH in a matter of days but just for the cancelled leg and actually they repaid me about 20 percent less than i paid for the one way flight.
Just fyi incase anyone in the same boat.

    • Lady London says:

You cam get the rest off Lufthansa as they are responsible for full cost of replacement flight with whoever. Even if far higher cost than you paid. Assuming you ask LH for a replacement flight.

Lufthansa has not behaved well in Covid. However I’d still send a Letter Before Action (email ok) to ebookers and LH jointly at their UK addresses for the difference plus any additional transport, accommodation, and meals/refreshments for any extra time you were awaiting your replacement flight. Quote EU261 rerouting rights they have failed to provide in full.

Give them 14 days to pay up. Likely they’ll ignore so do a simple moneyclaimonline dot gov dot uk. You get the small feevreturned to you when you win which you will (these days it’s pretty much all done without physical court appearance). I personally would add 8%pa pro rata till paid statutory interest to the amount since LH knows perfectly well that’s what they are responsible for.

If you paid on UK credit card skip the above and ask your care for the amount owed under Section 75 which makes card jointly liable for providing what you purchased in full and any associated statutory rights including EU261 and its equivalent now in UK law too. Card credits you then they go after LH/ebookers (you don’t care who is responsible the judge will sort it out) and will get their money back from them.

Just to be clear Andrew the airline can’t just refund you. They are liable for either refund or cost of replacement flight as near to the original time as reasonable or replacement flight at a later date of passenger’s choosing. YOU get to choose which. Airline has no right to just refund you – they must provide *your* choice under the law.

Note we’ve seen examples reported here of this kind of thing by BA too when they have cancelled all their flights on a route or dropped it completely. Eg LBA when dropped the route, BA refunded then refused to do any more (or offered some substandard rail partial option) which is illegal. Many passengers would know no better about their right to full cost of all replacement transport even if that had to be on other airlines and that’s what these naughty airlines rely on.

Never thought I would say this, but our experience at Luton airport yesterday was positively civilised compared to the normal hellhole it is!

No lounge available (they’re open something stupid like 4am-8am most days, then if you’re lucky til early afternoon on others).

Witnessed a right hoo ha going on with a few passengers being refused entry at the gate on a flight to Amsterdam. Couldn’t hear it all, but was to do with their vaccine proof.

Was very disappointed at the number of people on the flight ignoring staff requests to keep their masks on, and getting off the plane was bedlam (we stayed put and waited for special assistance).

Landed in Ibiza at 11.20pm, we were out including collecting luggage and checking in to our hotel by 11.50pm.

If anybody is contemplating a flight to Istanbul, BA are using B772s this last week. My wife flew yesterday and after 30 minutes waiting for the check-in staff to find her a “nice seat please” she got 1F (which I believe was in the First section).

4.5 hours in a refurbished 777 is better than an Iberia flight to Madrid.

    • Russ says:

Well done Mrs Greg. Let’s hope these wide bodies stick around on these routes a little longer.

  • Rma says:

Re E vouchers. Been trawling through BA t&c but not totally clear. We are travelling on separate days from the family. I am paying for all the flights. However, if the family later cancel and get an e voucher, can I use the e voucher or does it have to be used by at least one of the original passengers on that booking? Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.

What’s the cheapest day 2 test option these days?

  • Alan says:

How are AMEX about giving students CCs. My Daughter wants one but has zero income apart from holiday jobs and BOMAD..

    • Anna says:

I’m starting to wonder about this. I think the issue would be that the young person effectively has no credit history. Your daughter could have a supp on your account.
Having said that, I seem to get massive credit limits based on our household income rather than my relatively modest pension, so maybe Amex takes that into account for students as well?

      • Keely says:

I referred my son for his first amex when he was 18 . He had zero credit history and was a full time student but did have a part time job (10 hours pw). Was accepted immediately and has since cancelled and been accepted for BA Amex in same job / income circumstances. Did include HH income I think ….

    • Harry T says:

They need some kind of credit history first, based on my experience.

      • Sean says:

Not necessary – put student on the app but include other household income. That is what Amex told me to do and daughters card approved immediately.

        • Alan says:

Thanks I will that a go

          • Flyoff says:

My university student daughter applied 2 weeks ago, No credit history but was accepted online with a small credit limit She used the income we provide for accommodation and student loan and part time jobs.

    • R says:

Household income! I was in the same position when I was 18. Got a 1k limit at first. Still a student with no income, now a 15k credit limit (8, 5, 3k across 3 cards) – never asked for it, guessing it’s based on my Amex history/spend due to parents’s supplementary cards

      • Anna says:

Yep – I have a modest pension and small income from tutoring but I have over £50k of credit across 5 or so cards! They must think I am extremely sensible lol.

  • den says:

How flexible is the BA Household account? My mother-in-law has around 45k Avios that she says I can have but with Friends and family you can’t pool Avios. Can I add her to my household account even though she doesn’t live with me? Or is there a way she can transfer them to me? TIA!
