The HfP chat thread – Thursday 23rd September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Apparently BA can’t reach agreement with BALPA and have pulled all LGW short haul – other than UK Domestic – flights from the schedule.

L:GW-AMS that were there yesterday now no longer showing in the app and this message displayed

‘Sorry we don’t fly from Gatwick to Amsterdam’

  • Patrycja says:

    Quick question on verifly.

We are flying from Spain to Uk on Saturday and Iberia asked us to upload our documents in advance. I did that just now but until the documents are verified, I cannot see our seat numbers to fill in PLF. Will our documents be verified without copy of PLF? It’s a bit of a chicken and egg dilemma.

Any personal experiences would be welcome

    • meta says:

You can select seats without checking in, usually from 24hrs before the flight unless you have status or your ticket allows it.

      • Patrycja says:

We are flying Club Europe and I am BA silver. I chose the seats some time ago but cannot access seat numbers. From what you are saying, I gather that I will be able to to do this 24hrs in advance. Thank you. Very helpful

        • AL says:

You should be able to see your seats in MMB and in the app before you’ve checked in.

          • meta says:

Yes, seats show in the app or via desktop site when you look in manage my booking. No need to check in.

          • Patrycja says:

Cannot see the seats on the app but can try desktop when we are back at the hotel. What is MMB?

          • Patrycja says:

Manage my booking only lets me add it to the calendar and nothing else. Leg 3 of the flights (London to Edinburgh) is on BA, I can see the seat numbers for that leg on BA app but for the San Sebastián and Madrid flight

    • MM says:

Seat numbers are not a mandatory field. You can complete the PLF and move on!

£20 Amazon voucher turned up today from Spectator. 12 weeks for £12 and £20 Amazon gift voucher 😀

    • Rich says:

I’ve just checked my junk folder. Not had that offer, but all of these just in the last couple of months:

      – 10 weeks for £4.95, plus a free bottle of Pimm’s
      – 6 months for £39, free £20 Amazon
      – 6 months for £39, free £20 Amazon and 6 months of Telegraph
      – 3 months for £9.99
      – 1 month free

Do they just use a fruit machine to pick the offers?

    • Paul says:

How long did it take to receive the £20 Amazon GC from subscribing?

  • Niall says:

Sina (or others!), do you recall how quickly after reaching MeliáRewards platinum status, your counters restarted so that your nights started counting towards maintaining status?

I qualified for platinum a few days ago but the counters in the app just show 0 nights needed to get platinum.

Also, weird feature of MeliáRewards I recently noticed – nights for status qualification post shortly after checking in for a stay and not check out. So the stay I am on now achieved platinum for me, even though I won’t technically have stayed all the nights until October.

    • Sina says:

Hi Niall, sorry I got my Platinum from Spanish Amex, so not sure when the counter will reset if it does!
Also, I’ve had nights from canceled stays credited, so not really sure how the system works!

      • Niall says:

Ahh, no problem. You’re probably right with ‘if it does’. I don’t think even anyone at Melia knows how the system works.

  • James says:

Never done a code share with BA/Qatar before. I’m BAEC Gold and was wondering what I’m entitled to in LHR and DOH airports during my trip to MLE tomorrow. We’re flying Economy by the way.

    • TGLoyalty says:

LHR would be first wing check in and First lounge assuming you’re on BA flight (checkin for Qatar would be at their desk but you can use the wing for security after)

In Doha it’s the pretty poor “first class” lounge for status customers flying Eco which probably still has a clear glass roof (it’s annoyingly positioned right below a big flashing animated advertising board)

  • Shaw West says:

“150,000 points and one Free Night Award worth 85,000 points (Category eight standard rate).” Amex Bonvoy (US) . And 20K here. Damn

    • Anna says:

Is the US one not a once only offer? Though yes, you’d have to sign up a few times (and not have any Amex for 2 years in between) to match it!

  • Mark Peterborough says:

Crowne Plaza – London City .
Somebody was asking a couple of weeks ago if anyone knows when it is re-opening . I did have a booking there for December , they called me today to advise that they are still closed and will be re-opening on March 1st .

  • Asim says:

I’ve seen this asked before, but been unable to find the answer:
If a departing BA flight is moved from LHR to LGW, but flight number remains the same, is it considered a cancellation (so rebooking rights per EU261)?
I recall that if the flight number changes, then it WILL be a cancellation, but what if flight number is unchanged?

    • Anna says:

BA has tried to argue previously that all London airports count as one but I think that has been successfully challenged.

    • Paul says:

When my flight was moved from LGW to LHR earlier this year, BA immediately refunded me without putting up a fight.

      • ChrisC says:

Ditto with me as well. No issues.

Also just checked an LGW booking they moved to LHR and the option to cancel is there in MMB so check that before calling (unless it’s a complex or holiday booking)

    • Asim says:

Thanks! I’ll take the chance – trying to get some FTVs converted to cash 😉
