The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 22nd September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    Numpty question.
    I have 2 x 2 for 1 BAPP.
Can I use these to book my family of 4 on flights ?
    My husband has supplementary BAPP.
I assume I would have to ring for this ?

    • mr_jetlag says:

ring and they will book 2x bookings which you can then (status permitting) link together for free seat selection.

    • Anna says:

If the 2 vouchers are on the same BAEC account, you can make a booking for 4 people online, providing there are 4 avios seats available.

    • Rob says:

Are the vouchers both in your name? If so, you can do it online. Search for 4 people and the system should let you do the booking.

If one is in your name and 1 your husband (which doesn’t seem to be the case by what you said) you need to make 2 separate bookings.

  • The cyclist says:

yes but not on the same flight!! 🙂

    • Marie says:

Sorry can you clarify? Obviously I would like all 4 of us to head to sunny places together on the same plane !

      • Anna says:

Think this is a response to someone else! Just go onto the booking page in your account and it will ask you which vouchers you want to use.

  • Paul says:

I am looking at using avios on the new Man-JFK route in December but the Aer Lingus site is somewhat opaque. I am trying to find availability, cost of taxes and avios needed. Does anybody have any tips on how I can get this?

    • Anna says:

Have you tried searching on ba.com? That said, I don’t think Aer Lingus guarantee reward seats – are you travelling around Xmas/New Year? I would imagine award availability would be extremely limited at these times anyway.

  • DJ says:

Anyone had an invite from Chase yet? 🙂

    • Ste C says:

Not yet, signed up just before 7am yesterday

    • Shaw West says:

Just message: “You’re on the list!

We’re excited for you to open your account and start experiencing all that Chase has to offer. Soon, you can expect:”

  • Sid G says:

Friend in Oman wants to travel back to UK now that it’s off red list

Am I correct in that he can’t fly before 2 October or else hotel quarantine is triggered (because part of his last 10 days will have been in a country that was still red-listed at the time)?

Just not entirely clear on GOV UK

    • Jonathan says:

No. If he lands in U.K. when Oman is no longer on red list then previous 10 days is irrelevant.

      • Jonathan says:

If in the previous 10days they had been in a different country that is still red when they land then that would be an issue.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s about the status when they land not when it changed from/to red

Would still have to home quarantine because Oman isn’t on the list of countries they’ll accept a vaccine record from yet

  • Cup says:

Hoping I get an answer this time.
Has anyone used a uk based antigen test for fit to fly certificate travelling between non uk destinations.

So far example travelling from Canada or one of the South American states into USA itself.

  • Marie says:

Sorry can you clarify? Obviously I would like all 4 of us to head to sunny places together on the same plane !

    • Rob says:

If both vouchers are in your name then just go to ba.com, search for 4 Avios seats, tick ‘use companion vouchers’ and you can book all 4 together using 2 vouchers.

You only have a problem if the vouchers are in two different names.

IHg Hertz Hertz Gold Plus Rewards® Five Star status.

Is this worth anything? Does it give good discounts not found anywhere else?

    Booking direct with Hertz
Probably being stupid but I could not see any cancellation terms when I tried to book?

Can you cancel when you book direct?

    Thanks

    • Rich says:

I’ve had decent upgrades which I’m fairly sure are down to 5*. Very much depends on location though.

It’s hidden away. Even on a prepay rate, it’s a full refund if you cancel ‘by midnight 2 days before’, which is still not clear whether a Saturday rental needs to be cancelled by 2359 Thursday or 2359 Wednesday!

    • Oh! Matron! says:

Have also had decent upgrades. Hired an SUV for a trip to your (Some nissan thing), got a merc convertible. Drank like a fish, but was fun. Had a mustang in the US for the price of a corolla. Hired a C category last week from inverness, got a really nice Skoda SUV.

However, in the US, there is a massive shortage of cars due to a lack of chips, so I wouldn’t expect anything other than what you book.
