The HfP chat thread – Sunday 19th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Toronto border control was busy yesterday, was sat in the plane for over an hour then took another hour to get thru customs. Baggage area was the opposite to usual, no ppl gathered waiting for luggage, just carousels full of luggage and luggage piled up waiting for ppl.

I wasnt able to check in online with ba for the outbound, would that have been cos i didnt use verifly? Or does verifly not affect if u can ciol or not? Not sure if i should use it for the return or not as if it still prolly wont let me check in im not sure theres any point.

  • Michelle says:

Hi, can you get a joint / supplementary cardholder for the virgin reward credit cards? From my research I’m guessing not but I thought I’d check here just in case. Thanks

    • AL says:

The terms don’t suggest so, but then again Virgin Money certainly have other cards that you can have a supp on…

    • Joe says:

Yes you can – provided you live at the same address.

    • Jonathan says:

Nearly all credit companies allow supplementary cardholders on the condition they meet certain requirements.

CornerCard that issued the Miles & More Diners card, that also came with a Debit MasterCard, did not permit any additional cardholders to be added onto the account, in his review of the now defunct cards, Rob stated he doesn’t know why they won’t allow it. Credit / Charge cards that have this type of policy are rare

    • Harry T says:

Yes, but they must live with you. I have one for my gf. Previously they wouldn’t give her one before we lived together.

    • Neil Spellings says:

Yes you can but there are no facilities for managing the card in their app at all..you have to do everything by phone!

  • YC says:

Anyone had issues doing a partner redemption on BA site recently? Can’t get it to finish processing the payment. Any work around? Tried both site and app

  • AL says:

FTV saga continues. Must be nearly three weeks now with no sign of my FTV! BA on Twitter totally unresponsive, Silver line cuts me off when I use the obvious options. What magic spell are fellow HfPers using to get a human being? 🙂

    • Sam G says:

Have you looked at your PNR on Qantas website? If you see a random flight to a strange destination then you’ve already got the FTV – it’s just the original ticket number on your booking (find it on the e-ticket)

      • AL says:

Great idea. Sadly, the PNR on the Qantas website just shows the flight I should have taken – nothing else. No strange flights (a shame!).

        • Sam G says:

Was that flight cancelled? If you “no-show” a flight that did depart (even if you told BA in time) then that’ll make a bit of a mess they’ll have to unpick but that is their problem, not yours. Try calling at 8am on the dot I’ve always managed to get through then

          • AL says:

FR24 shows it flew. I’ll give them a go at 0800 and see what they say… fingers crossed! Cheers.

    • Froggee says:

My wife swears selecting the option to buy a ticket for cash holds the most success.

  • Robman says:

Hi some assistance please – my wife’s BAPP 2-4-1 voucher expires on 1st October 2021 (was issued on 1st October 2018) and I need to do something to avoid that happening. I know the advice is to book a cheap return domestically in the UK and then cancel for a FTV 24 hours later. Do you think there is any chance that BA will extend the 2-4-1 themselves or is too risky to leave it until the last days of September?
Any other advice regarding this much appreciated.

    • Mike says:

Robman- I am in a similar position I am really hoping that BA will announce 6 mth extension during the last week of September ( Virgin have done it already apparently)

      • Robman says:

hi Mike – personally i think the chances of a further extension are pretty remote (given that its already been extended a further year past its normal life). And i think that if they were going to extend them, surely they would have done that by now? I think i’ll wait a couple of days and then bite the bullet anyway.

        • Mike says:

Robman – I am just surprised that they haven’t said anything yet – ie we are going to extend them or we aren’t going to extend them or even we will be making a decision on this date etc etc

          • SteveJ says:

Why would you expect them to say they are not going to extend them? Unrealistic expectation.

      • Rob says:

I now believe that BA is not going to extend 2-4-1 vouchers any further. You will find out why I think this soon enough ….

        • Robman says:

Intriguing Rob, do you have news that the vouchers will no longer have an expiry date!

        • Mike says:

Ok that is enough of a clue for me to use 2 of the ones I have on random bookings then cancel the booking

  • Kevin says:

Data point. Just to confirm that £200 free dining highlighted by Rob last week. Amex is adding the offer to new Amex platinum member now. I applied last week and the offer is added today.

  • The Original Nick says:

Marriott offer is on my BA Amex but not on any others.

    • Babyg says:

cant add the marriott offer to my amex gold(s) for some reason – other offers save fine

sorry we are unable to save this offer to your card, please try again later

  • Laura says:

Good afternoon all. Has anyone ever had any issues downloading the certificate from the Chronomics dashboard (Fit to Return in this case)? The result is showing but when either my husband or I try to press Download to get the actual document nothing happens. Have tried on both iPhone and iPad.

    • JDB says:

It may be stating the obvious, but with downloads on iPhone/iPad, you don’t get a ‘pop up’, it appears at the top of the screen with an arrow inside a circle, as it does on a Mac.

      • Ant says:

I couldn’t get it to download either, VeriFLY eventually accepted a screenshot after a few attempts including cancelling that application and started a new one. Have also been able to check in as well now, unlike our departing flight

        • Laura says:

Thanks @JDB, but no, it doesn’t even come up with that.
@Ant that’s brilliant, cheers for that. Uploaded the screenshot to Verify as you suggested and accepted a few minutes later 👍

    • Tracey says:

On OH’s iPhone the email said there was an attachment but it wasn’t showing. Turned out his phone had put it straight into the “files” app.

      • meta says:

I had same issues downloading it with Iphone/Ipad. Eventually switched to my laptop and I was able to download.

I dislike the sites which use whatever piece of software that is not mobile-friendly or compatible with all devices. It’s nearly the end of 2021 and even in remotest parts of the world they have smartphones and use them for almost everything.
