Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Oh OK. Do the Avios amounts match on both inbound and outbound? If so I would try calling again.

  • KBuffett says:

Has anyone found Curry’s gift cards at Morrison’s? My local megastore doesn’t seem to have any

    • Kevin C says:

Yes, I’ve seen Curry’s/PC World gift cards at Morrisons.

    • mark2 says:

You can also use One4All cards at Currys, but only one card online (I have heard).

      • Jonathan says:

I wouldn’t bother with the One4All card unless you’re desperate, it can be a real nightmare to use, or get the balance to zero. If you don’t get the balance to zero within a certain timeframe, they’ll start throwing charges at you

        • Reney says:

I have really liked them. They can be added to Airtime. It looks like you can donate to children in need, so my plan is to donate final small balance there. Boots and M&S are also good places for zero-ing

  • NSL says:

Marriott Day Rooms – I know you are not supposed to get an elite night credit for use but what are peoples experiences? I was planning on using a few hotels around London but the elite night would be a nice-to-have bonus if I can find the right property.

  • Mark says:

I just had to settle a very big IHG bill with my debit card because of the curve saga. I have been abroad travelling so was no able to return to pick up the physical card after there immediate announcement, so lots of points lost, has anybody had a sympathetic ear calling creation and asking to be reimbursed?

    • Sean says:

Not sure what you think Creation will reimburse you for. You wanted to pay a bill but didn’t have the card with you so couldn’t use it. The fact you have previously used an intermediary (be it curve, apple pay or google pay) is nothing to do with creation – that was your choice. Take it up with curve.

      • meta says:

I always take a physical card that I know I am going to use in addition to Curve. You never know when they might not function as these are not proper banks. Lesson learned for the future!

        • Jonathan says:

When travelling abroad, I always carry the actual card made to use any bookings, or a card you might have a use for, you just need to put them in a metal card tin and bury it deep within your baggage, ideally hand luggage as well when you’ll be in the skies

      • Mark says:

Of course they are not in the wrong, however for years I didn’t need to carry my card because they allowed curve, they withdrew that whilst I was on holiday no notice, my back up is my Apple Pay but creation don’t allow there cards to be added. I am not suggesting they owe me anything I just asked if anybody had any joy getting a sympathetic ear from them re: lost points due to no notice. There’s people on this forum who have had a sympathetic ear for a lot less and well done to them.

        • Blenz101 says:

As I suggested below the hotel may well be sympathetic. It is going to be no skin off the staff working the front desk to refund you on one card and charge you another even if “corporate” may pay more for you to settle this way.

Creation on the other hand are not going to throw points at you for not bringing you card with you and will have little sympathy over Curve usage given it was being used to facilitate MS. They aren’t going to throw more points at a Curve used after withdrawing it.

          • Mark says:

Thanks, spoke to hotel and they agreed to charge my IHG premium without the card being present as I had relevant card detail.

    • David says:

      Er, absolutely not.

    • Tw33ty says:

Lol. Has ali changed his user name.
      Posts like this are hilarious.

      • Mark says:

Always somebody who wants to laugh at other people, as long as laughing at others makes you feel better. Good luck.

    • BP says:

I got burned with Curve this week with a very large IHG bill. I only have Curve Blue and they applied the 2% charge as my bill was over £500. Wouldn’t have used Curve if I realised that was being enforced!!

      • Jonathan says:

Suspect they might start enforcing all of the charges including ATM withdrawals imminently. It’s not exactly been a stellar month for Curve & I imagine they’ll struggle with next funding round if transaction volumes/value has fallen off a cliff.

        • Mr. AC says:

Isn’t it the other way around? If they want more funding, they need to show growth not revenue – so unlikely they’d start tightening the bolts.

  • Blenz101 says:

By far you best chance is to ask the hotel if they will refund your debit and recharge your credit card if you can come up with a reasonable explanation. Perhaps should have gone to a work issued card? Having status or future bookings may also help get you some sympathy.

From Creation’s perspective you didn’t bring your card and paid on an alternative. They aren’t really in the wrong here.

  • Simon lark says:

Hi are Turkish airlines still offering nhs discount do you know ? Can’t find an email for Turkish in the U.K. to query this (i am a nurse )

  • aviosnewbie says:

How is Montenegro in October half term weather-wise? Any suggestions on where to go and things to do?

    • JDB says:

Isn’t Montenegro currently on the red list? Not sure when some more countries might drop off, but mid October may be optimistic.

      • Aso40 says:

It was one that they just moved on to the red list in the announcement last week.

    • BJ says:

It’s Red I think, not one of tgeveight removed last wee IIRC.

  • ALEXANDER BARCLAY says:

marriott deal is on nectar cards
