Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

QQ BA flight upgrade using Avios.

Managed to upgrade a short haul flight to business – IB on A350 thinking that I will get additional Avios and Tier Point but the MMB still shows same Avios for Y class booking.
Given the price of upgrade I wouldn’t be surprised if extra tier point and Avios are not granted.

    • Jonathan says:

You earn Avios & TP based on the underlying fare.

Avios redemption upgraded with cash = no Avios or TP’s.

Cash Y fare upgraded with Avios to J = Y Avios & TP earning.

Cash Y fare upgraded with cash to J in advance or at airport = J Avios & TP.

Note that the actual TP & Avios earnings will depend on what fare bucket your economy ticket is in & if you upgrade to CE via a promotional upgrade at airport you’ll earn at discount business (I/R) level.

Most other airlines (including Qatar & AA) don’t give you increased miles earnings or status credits for any upgrades.

Any HfP suggestions from the wise collective? in London on a Sunday night upcoming meeting with two friends and one has suggested we book somewhere “posh” and “nice” for dinner. Any suggestions for somewhere “posh” but informal and not too dead on a Sunday? All types of food considered; staying not far from Covent Garden.
No Amex £200 dining in play before anyone mentions it 😀

Colony Grill at the Beaumont, recently renovated.

Can’t beat Rules’ if near Covent Garden.

    • mr_jetlag says:

Christopher’s is nearby, posh but understated. Had many birthday champagnes there years ago

    • HH says:

For nice but informal near Covent Garden, I’d recommend the NoMad or the Delaunay. Also very popular (though I’m not sold) are The Petersham and Sushi Samba.

    • AJA says:

A bit further afield I like the Skylon, either the more formal restaurant or the brasserie, at the South Bank Centre.

Or Le Pont de la Tour by Tower Bridge. But not sure what that’s like on a Sunday.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

      Thanks all.
It’s worth noting that a number of the places suggested close at 5pm on a Sunday (as do lots of others). We’d be looking Sunday evening. That’s the main reason for my query….

      • Rob says:

I’d second Rules for something totally different in an amazing space. There’s an Ivy in the market, there is Balthazar … no shortage of options. STK steakhouse if you want a rowdy night in the ME Hotel.

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Challenging brief. Not much will be open beyond 9/10 on Sunday. Try Barbary, Hawksmoor Seven Dials or a Flat Iron. If you’re happy to venture into Soho then that opens up more options. E.g. Blacklock, Barrafina, Yauatcha, Kiln, Ham Yard.

    • Memesweeper says:

      Bentleys Oyster Bar

you might even have some Amex money off

    • Mouse says:

      Tredwells would fit the brief

  • Ant says:

Virgin credit card – I have cash back showing as pending from a transaction at Morrison on 29 Aug. How long does it take to move to “available”? The statement has already been issued with the original transaction but no cash back

    • Sean says:

mine take about 4/5 days from appearing in savings to statement. Just had 6 lots credit this morning.

    • Reney says:

Go to your activity, click the little grey circle next to your transaction and it will tell you when it will be available. About 30 days.

  • The Lord says:

What’s the latest on the T5 galleries? North and South both open? Table service still going? Still very busy?

  • Gavin says:

Morning all from the Voco, Reading.

Used a hotels.com voucher to stay here – putting my IHG number in the booking notes has paid dividends as this lowly Gold was upgraded to a suite and given a drinks voucher. Didn’t get a chance to use the room to its full potential but a comfortable nights sleep.

Food poor according to friends who ate here last night, and mostly agency staff doing the F&B. I’m off for a swim now, breakfast later on.

  • Andrew says:

I’ve filled in the Spain arrivals app and there doesn’t seem to be an option to upload the vaccine passport. Is that right? Is it because we don’t have an EU vaccine passport so they check on arrival?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

      Correct

    • Greenpen says:

There will be a check when you arrive of the Spanish form. From the fuss at the queues a paper copy seems better than an electronic one. My UK vaccine record was not checked but I guess they do so randomly to ensure your entry form declaration is correct.

  • JohnT says:

Did I read any comments recently about applying FTVs to existing bookings and claiming back the real cash/ avios – or was it just a dream?

    • VerdantBacon says:

Use the FTV to book a flight that will get cancelled

      • ChrisC says:

Fewer and Fewer flights are getting cancelled these days so that ‘trick’ is harder to use unless you have a magic list to share of these flights.

  • Katie says:

Do you get PLF code when booking self swap on site from the providers?
