Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Friday 17th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Alex says:

As mentioned yesterday in the comments, it looks like a new lot of mileage-extending M&M transactions for the people who used to hold the M&M CC have posted on Sept 16. I no longer see an expiry for a 60k lot of my miles on Dec 31, which was the case previously. Not sure if the expiry won’t reappear on Oct 1 with the new quarter, but for now it looks like miles expiry may have been inadvertently extended for some.

    • idrive says:

Amazing, i can confirm i see the same +1 miles protection on 16/09 and no expiring miles this quater! thanks!

  • Lucky Luke of London says:

Bon Friday HfP peeps. Has anyone had any experience of the Iberia COVID documentation portal? Suddenly VeriFLY doesn’t seem so bad anymore…

    • Simon Miller says:

I tried to use it about six weeks ago and managed to submit documents, but it didn’t seem to have any benefit – I was still asked to show them at check in.

  • Dan says:

Does feeding Ernie with bendy beardy still incur no fees, despite the august changes?

    • Jonathan says:

Try £10 & see is the only answer. Yesterday’s position may mean nothing today.

    • Aston100 says:

What happened when you tried it?

      • David says:

Do people eally think NS&I won’t be having the same conversations with virgin money that it seems they had with creation and led to this being shut down?
Okay, the volumes might not have been the same with this card (who knows) but they’ll be looking at all routes not just the biggest hitters.
Really don’t know why people now risk this MS BS and their cards being shut down or KYC etc.

        • Rui N. says:

I get more with MS in my Virgin card in one year that I would otherwise get in one year. The risk benefit assessment is clearly on the side on maximizing MS while possible.

      • Dace says:

It is very unlikely it’ll work.

  • Paul says:

Pre Covid i could cancel an Avios booking online for full refund of points plus cash less £35. If I still want that (not a voucher) am I right in thinking I now have to phone up?!

    • Rich says:

Yes, they’ve hidden the usual refund option.

I believe you can also take the voucher now, but change you mind later and go for the £35 option after all. But I may be wrong there.

      • Paul says:

Thanks, thought I couldn’t spot it! Wanted to check before I endure the phone wait

    • Anna says:

Generally, yes, though I managed to persuade them to do this on Twitter at one point!

    • Sam G says:

You can cancel on chat as well, I’ve got through a couple of times quite easily

      • Peter says:

Hi, how to access on chat as I can only get autorobot which is useless basically. thanks

  • Keith says:

I’m trying to combine my Iberia miles to BA and having issues resetting Avios.com password and keep getting errors. Any ideas?

  • Dominic says:

Probably a stupid question, but flying to Poland today for a few days.

For the return ‘fit to fly’ test, will any provider of LFDs in town do, or does it need to be more specific than any old Polish pharmacy?

    • Sandgrounder says:

It just needs to meet the criteria set out on the gov.uk website, the technical standards and the required info on the certificate. There is no approved list of providers.

    • BMarsh says:

Hi Dominic, we went to Poland for two weeks in August and we got our return tests from Warsaw airport, the day before we were due to return but if you search for Damian medical, they have centres all over the country, which meet the requirements.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

The most important thing is to ensure it’s in English or one of the other approved language (I think French, Spanish or German but not too sure as everywhere I’ve used has offered it in English). As there’s no approved provider list there is nothing stopping people making up an official looking PDF and using that. I don’t agree with that, in most countries you can get tests cheap enough and I’d rather not risk the small chance of being infected and spreading it to others on the plane and in the airport.

  • Mjshort says:

Getting a new ba accelerating amex plat business. Do these have the £200 Ivy restaurant credit?

  • Fazzy Bear says:

Chase Uk launching their digital only bank next week.

Any news on what they will offer compared to the rest of the pack?

    • Fazzy Bear says:

      *Chase from JP Morgan

    • Rob says:

Highly likely to be a Marcus clone with a market leading interest rate and nothing else.

      • Andy says:

Not really, unlike Marcus which is savings only, Chase is a normal account you can use to make payments, direct debits, etc…

      • David says:

Pretty sure they’ve already confirmed it will be a current account.

    • Jack says:

Presumably they will want to keep it under the £25bn deposit limit so there is no requirement to ring fence (which is what Marcus/GS is). Although the FT article mentions mortgages, so you never know. They will be in the same problem as HSBC though, excess deposits inside the UK ring fence, so offer cheap mortgages, in an already very competitive market. The unintended consequences of ring fencing….
