Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • SG says:

    Morning all
What would be the best use of 3500 Miles@More orphan miles or what’s the cheapest way of keeping them alive?

    • Stu N says:

Redeem for gift cards if that’s still an option.

Otherwise just let them die, small pots of M&M are essentially worthless and you can’t extend them unless you have a M&M card (the UK one is closed) or status with LH.

      • SG says:

Thank you Stu N,that’s what I thought, most probably they will go expired, not enough to redeem a voucher

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

There was quite a discussion on this in yesterday’s chat iirc…

  • Ed says:

Email from Accor saying that any points earned will now (officially) extend the validity of your points balance, including from partners etc. Might make the current bonus q-miles even more appealing.

  • Hugh says:

If I cancel an internal US Avios flight that costs £4 do I just lose the £4 and still get my Avios back? I don’t get charged the normal £35 do I?

    • Stu N says:

Correct, I cancelled one at the weekend and I got miles back but no additional charge. You do need to phone to do it as Online only offers a voucher.

  • Sam says:

Morning all. I have just got my BA Premium annual fee come in. My anniversary date is 19th August but my statment comes in on the 16th. So I’ve got my statement come in today and it shows the higher fee of £250. I was expecting the old fee of £195. Am I wrong here or should it be the lower fee still?

    • Rob says:

Lower fee. Amex is aware of this bug and will refund it. Call them, ask to speak to a supervisor if the agent hasn’t got the memo.

      • Sam says:

        Thank you! 🙂

      • Jonathan says:

Is that definitely the case for annual fees? Confirmed in writing? I thought it was only upgrades/new applications that were guaranteed lower fee if processed before 1st September as T&C’s not entirely clear on anniversary vs statement date.

      • Youllnever says:

Surprised Amex isn’t proactively fixing the issue. Are they simply waiting for people to spot the issue and raise it with them?

        • Ben says:

I was told when I rang up yesterday that they are aware of it and will refund in time for the next statement. Wasn’t convinced but didn’t want to argue – it wasn’t the Brighton call centre..

  • Dave says:

The previous question with M&M has made me realise…

I have 65k of my 93k M&M expiring on December 31st, now that the credit card has gone away!

I’m thinking the best approach is to book an F award ticket in December to the USA for next year, presumably the ticket can then stay changeable for travel in the full ticket validity of 2021, without losing the miles?

    Thanks,

    • Rob says:

Yes, agreed. Not much else you can do.

    • idrive says:

got the same issue, have 80k expiring 30/09 and don’t know what to do with it. have no ideas for trips at the moment. I would be ok to book with the guarantee that i can change itinerary later.

  • Lee G says:

Mainly one for Anna, though others may be interested if they have had their BA holiday flights moved from Gatwick to Heathrow and are looking to reschedule to an alternative airport.

Called BA on the nose at 8am and got through within 30 seconds. They were absolutely fine shifting the flights to come in and out of Manchester – all sorted within 15 minutes or so.

    • Anna says:

Glad you got it sorted – I generally book from MAN so we can check luggage all the way through, not done a trip from LGW since they pulled the connection (which I think possibly re-started recently but who knows for how long?!)

  • N says:

“If we can insert a Gif of us using map page here that’d be great…

Just use one we’ve already created and remove advertising messaging”

    • tom1 says:

      Yes I saw that too!
Couldn’t work out if it was supposed to be humour but then realised it was the new RFF and just poor!

  • Shaw West says:

35K points for Platinum retention today on Mrs. Account.

    • Alan says:

50K for me yesterday. Was yours a second bite of the cherry?

      • Reney says:

how long have you had the account pls?

        • Jonathan says:

Pointless question as the retention amount is predetermined. You won’t negotiate yourself a higher amount than the system states & saying a friend got 50k just flags you as a chancer so more likely they call your bluff.

          • Reney says:

I was wondering if the predetermined amount is linked with the duration of holding the card. If holding the card for an extra month before calling is the difference between 35k and 50k I would wait another month to call. I wasn’t planning on saying “my friend got x offer”.

          • TGLoyalty says:

It seems to more likely linked to total time as n Amex customer than card itself.

        • Alan says:

          just over 6 months.
