The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 15th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does Emyr get any additional benefits for SLH bookings?

    • Rob says:

There IS a preferred partner scheme but not all hotels take part. Benefits (2 night stay needed):

$50 credit per room, per stay to be used on food & beverage or spa
      Daily continental breakfast for two
      Upgrade at check-in, if available
      Early check-in/late check-out, if available
      Complimentary Wi-Fi

      • Duncan says:

Is there a way to know before sending a message whether he can offer anything for a specific hotel? I messaged about a couple of Intercontinental hotels in Canada and he couldn’t help (fair enough, he was very polite and friendly) but I hate to think I’m wasting his time if there’s a place I can do a little homework beforehand.

        • Rob says:

He doesn’t mind. It’s 60 seconds work to look it up for you.

It’s the nature of his job. Even after my rebate, he made £500 booking my Barbados trip for October and it took 30 minutes at most. He made more than that off my Mallorca holiday last month. Bookings like that average out the ones which don’t earn much (and everyone who makes big bookings generally started with small bookings).

You should see how many reader emails Rhys and I answer each day and we never make any money off them. Comes with the job.

  • Mco says:

I have earned my BA 2-4-1 on the new PP. Anyone know when it would be ok to downgrade to the free card?

My worry is the extra availability not being accessible after the downgrade. Anyone tried this?

    • SwissJim says:

Give it a go and then let us all know. If the availability’s gone, just upgrade again…. 👍

  • ChrisA says:

Does anybody have an on.to referral link?

    • Rich says:

Yep, you just need to use my code be53a when signing up. £50 off

      • ChrisA says:

Thanks Rich, now you’ve posted I recall it may have been you who brought them up in a discussion here recently (but I couldn’t quite remember who it was), and prompted me to look into it. So I’m glad I got your link!

        • Rich says:

Yes that rings a bell – conversation about petrol and EVs I think?

          Thanks for using the referral.

    • Rich says:

Feel free to ask any Qs. I’ve been very happy with them since they started giving out keys (instead of making you use their awful app).

  • mark2 says:

Usually T&C say yes, but often the refund is for a slightly different amount so difficult to tie up.

  • SteveJ says:

    Yes it does

  • EwanG says:

Re Hertz Australia. Has anyone else noticed prices are no longer competitive compared with before this year, and know how to get them to price reasonably again?

Dummy bookings via .au coming in at 20x the previous cost, on various dates to GVA. UK and CH site prices are around the same level as before ie not inflated.

    • Rich says:

I’ve noticed the same. Maybe the AU trick has gone?

I’m looking at GVA too. £350 a week in Jan, minimum. And that’s for a Compact, let alone anything decent.

    • Doug M says:

I think this is car rental in general, rates all over the place, varying between stupid expensive all the way to crazy expensive. Rental companies dumping inventory into the pandemic, hard to replace given microchip shortages and global supply chain issues.

      • Rich says:

Yes, prices all over the place. Definitely a time for booking flexible rates and checking frequently.

In May I locked in €150 for a week in Portugal, saw it go up to €600, and then rebooked for €90!

    • John says:

Probably because Australian residents can’t go anywhere… the prices may revert to previous levels (relative to other Hertz country sites) once leisure travel out of Australia is allowed

  • Join says:

Is it possible to cancel the unflown return segment of an Avios booking? And can this be achieved without calling BA?! I’ve tried and cannot get through!

    • Rob says:

Basically, no, assuming you have flown out.

You definitely lose the Avios. You may or may not lose the taxes.

We did an article on this pre-covid from someone who had gone down to Australia, decided to stay for longer than 12 months and so couldn’t push their return flight back any further, and therefore tried (and failed) to cancel it.

      • LS says:

If you have flown the outbound, could you not use the book with confidence on the return for an avios voucher?
Failing that, you could try and move it to a date that is likely to be cancelled by BA, ensuring that you would get a refund

    • Ikaz says:

You should be able to request a FTV online

  • Andrew says:

It *should* be charged back to you.

All depends on the provider. I’ve found that Amex tends to match well as does Airtime.

The various bank schemes vary in accuracy, I haven’t had anything charged back after it’s been credited. I suspect that they treat the month or so before they credit as a buffer zone for returns then everything else was paid for out of the company’s marketing budget anyway.

PAW, BA, VS and unmentionable sites will claw back even years later.
