We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    @Rob
Did you get chance to look into the Emirates subscription membership?

  • Ste C says:

Just noticed a spend £2600 get 1300 MR on my Plat, doesn’t start until October though

    • Shaw West says:

      And I got £900 and get 500MR :O

    • Manny_D says:

Got a spend £1200 get 600MR on my Gold.

    • Youllnever says:

Got £3000 get 1500 MR on my Gold, thanks!

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Lol I have spend £3.5k for 1,900 MR. Highly unlikely

    • George K says:

Weird – nothing on my 3 MR cards…

      • Anna says:

Me neither, 3 x MR or BAPP! I think they know we have hit all our spending targets for the year.

    • JDB says:

It seems super random – 1,600 MR for £3,100 spend (from 1-31 Oct)

    • mr_jetlag says:

Spend £300 get 200MR. Ratio is good, just needs another zero on!

    • AL says:

Spend £7k, get 1800 MR here. I put away about £5k on my AX Gold a month, but I’m going to be hard pushed to find a way to drop another £2k without some GC buying!

    • TicknBash says:

Couldn’t help to think with all these spend targets / retention offers being handed out….I wonder there’s a devaluation plan lurking on the sidelines once the activity numbers tell Amex / BA ‘we’re safe to piss off our customers’.

      • Fair Dinkum says:

Inflation is everywhere, why wouldn’t it show up in airline rewards?

        • Rob says:

Time for a quick economics lesson.

Hotel rewards SHOULD inflate because your earnings are based on $ spent. If a free night remained at (say) 50,000 points and you earned 10 points per $1, then by 2100 your average hotel room will cost $5,000 per night and you’d be earning a free night every night. Clearly that makes no sense.

Airline miles are usually earned by miles flown. That distance does not change. The schemes COULD keep pricing the same, forever, because the ratio of ‘flights needed to get a free flight’ would never change.

          • Fair Dinkum says:

BUT some airmiles fall into the £/$ example of hotels, points earned via credit cards and other partnerships. There has also been a debasement of the Avios currency as IAG have continued to issue points through the pandemic while the service they can be exchanged for has been reduced through cancelled flights; issuance will be down a bit but redemptions will be down a lot.

    • TGLoyalty says:

spend £6.6k get 1.7k MR on mine … no chance

    • anttelli says:

£500 spend get 300 points on my Rewards credit card

    • Can says:

Spend £3900 get 2000mr, here. Weirdly random.

    • Laura says:

Nothing on my Gold at all. Rubbish offers too lately.

Will have to ask mum to check her Supp

    • Navara says:

I received spend £33 get 300 MR points

  • Shaw West says:

Etihad SIN-VIE Z fare of £750. Will stack with the £150off £650 Amex Platinum

  • Peter says:

    Amex MR points issue

I hit the spending target for my former Amex Platinum CC and received all the bonus, then transferred them out and cancelled the Platinum CC. Unfortunately I had to cancel one trip and received the refund 15 days after the Platinum CC cancellation. I must admit that’s not the original plan by hitting spending target then cancelling and getting refund later.

Now, my new Amex Glod CC shows that there are -51,000 MR . I contacted Amex but was told due to the cancellation and refund, Amex had reversed the MR points. In order to balance my MR points, I will have to spend over £50,000 in future.

I could not accept it so raised a complaint, but no sure if there is anything else I can do? Thanks.

    • JDB says:

It isn’t entirely clear what the basis of your complaint is, since by hastily cancelling the card you effectively deprived yourself of the opportunity to ‘make good’ the refunded sum to get back to the SUB, so you have lost that SUB. This is just an inherent risk of playing the system. It may be annoying, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable.

      • Peter says:

well, I didn’t deliberatelly play the system, i.e, hit the target , get the points, then cancel the transaction to get the refund after moving out the points. I had lots spending to come after cancellation but wanted to use on a different card. I think it’s unfair by reversing the earned points but didn’t provide another solution to fix it.

        • JDB says:

I know lots of people do it and Amex doesn’t seem bothered by card churning, but cancelling shortly after earning the SUB is ‘playing’ the system. The refund is almost irrelevant, it’s just how you got caught out and a risk you perhaps should have considered rather than finessing the spend before cancelling. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

    • StevieKicks says:

Cancel the Gold card, wait a while and apply again.

      • Peter says:

thanks. I did ask, but was told the -51000 will stay forever under my name…

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Not true.

Did you apply for the gold while you still held the plat you cancelled? The MR account has been linked.

    • KBuffett says:

What is the basis of your complaint?

  • DW says:

Does anyone know how I get BA to talk to me? I’ve been trying for well over a week to speak to them about a cancelled flight. I’m due to fly in under 6 weeks but the flight they have moved us to is unsuitable so I just want to cancel. Cant do it on the website and can’t get through the IVR, every option path just ends (after about 3-4min) with “sorry we can’t take your call right now” then hangs up. Already tried facebook but to no avail.

    • Rhys says:

      Have you tried the webchat?

      • Andrew H says:

+1. It seems quite quick still – there’s a wait, but it tells you where you are in the queue

      • DW says:

I cant find the web chat anymore.. I used it a couple of weeks ago but it appears to have been disabled?

        • Rhys says:

No idea! I haven’t used it in a few weeks either.

        • AJA says:

@DW Log in to your BAEC account on a computer. Then click on Help (under the oneworld logo) and a Start Chat box should appear at the bottom right hand side of the screen. It is a blue box with Start chat written in white letters

          • DW says:

Thanks AJA, that’s how I got to it a few weeks, ago when I last used it, but it’s definitely not there now. I’ve even tried on a couple of browsers to make sure. My assumption is that BA have turned it off, although the 2 1/5 minute intro when you call the 0344 no. says it should exist.

          • AJA says:

@ DW That’s weird. It was there for me when I wrote those instructions this afternoon. Have you tried using incognito / private browsing mode?

          • DW says:

hmm that is really weird, I wonder if it’s linked to status? I’ve tried Safari and Chrome on my mac and Edge on a windows PC both logged in and not logged in and I can ‘t see the live chat now, although I could a couple of weeks ago.

  • Craig says:

Has anyone received the 3000 Avios yet for adding a Supp to the BAPP?

    • Anna says:

I applied for a supp on my gold about 2 weeks ago and no points yet. The card arrived a couple of days after I applied though!

      • Craig says:

Wonder if it is a ploy to stop people cancelling, website now says up to 90 days for the bonus Avios. I’ve taken a screenshot to be on the safe side.

        • Anna says:

Fortunately it’s a fairly new gold card which I won’t be cancelling until the end of year bonus hits!

    • RJA says:

Yes, almost immediately but not the 3000 for spending £500. Anybody has the 2nd lot?

      • Laura says:

I’ve not had the second lot yet but the first came through really quickly

      • AJA says:

Same here. My OH got the 3000 for adding me as a supp minutes after the application process finished. We are still waiting for the 3000 for spending £500 but as I have said before from reading the T&Cs is that it can take up to 120 days for all Avios to be awarded. Also the time limit for spending the £500 is 31 October so I suspect that 1 November is the earliest date we will see the 2nd 3000 Avios post.

    • MinR says:

Yes, got it after a week after adding the Supp. This was last month.

    • Blindman says:

Not on mine or Mrs B cards.

  • stairali says:

My flight back from Faro (via Lisbon) in October has been cancelled by TAP and the replacement includes a 7 hour layover in Lisbon. Of course, they also failed to contact me about this.

Am I right to think that I can insist to be booked on to another airline that operates a flight closer to my original timings? I expect TAP to refuse to do this so assume if that is the case I will need to book it myself and then claim via MCOL if necessary?

    • Ikaz says:

I don’t think that you will get any support at all from Tap… I wouldn’t waste my energy personally and rebook cash. They cancelled my flight a few years ago and put me on a flight a different day, they didn’t care at all about helping me and just told me to accept new date or cancel. And that was pre-covid

    • Anna says:

@meta has taken TAP to MCOL and won.

      • meta says:

No, I took BA to MCOL and won, but the replacement flight was on TAP.

I have however got 2x refunds via Amex dispute with TAP and once a partial refund via Amex for services not provided (no food, broken seat). If they haven’t informed you about it, I’d actually sit it out until you’re within 14 days before the flight as then there should be no pushback about your re-route rights. Just say you found out by chance when you tried to pay for seat selection, extra luggage or something similar. I know I might be scolded for saying this, but the airlines that customers badly deserve to be treated badly and they should pay for their audacity.

  • Aaron C says:

Has anyone been to Secrets St James/ Wild Orchid or Hyatt Zivari Rose Hall? Anything to chose between the resorts?
