Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 14th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Does anyone who used the intern rate at the Sheraton know if you can sign any one else into the lounge the same as you can do with IHG ambassador? Asking as we have friends who are booked to stay at the same time as us but not in the executive rooms. Thanks

    • George K says:

I was there last month. There was no check at the gate. Having said that, the lounge offerings outside breakfast were underwhelming. I only saw some scones and jam on offer during teatime. There is some wine, and some beer bottles in the fridge, but that’s it

  • Oliver says:

Hi all, I recently moved avios to nectar from within nectar app, how long do the nectar points take to show up? I think its been 4-5 days (including a weekend mind you)
Back in the day when you had to call up i know it would take a long time

    • Andrew H says:

Mine took 12 days, appearing yesterday. They say 10 max…

      • peter says:

I had the same 11-12 days, the only difference now is that you don’t need to call, it still takes a long while..

    • Andrew says:

They seem to be now setting a 10 day minimum – the wording says “after 10 days”. I don’t know if this is part of the security feature to apply this lag to give you time to spot the Avios gone before the thief can spend it. I moved across on the 1st, arrived on the 11th on the dot.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Nectar have never been good at keeping there timings. Best to leave it a week after they say they’ll do it and if not received live chat them. Though some of the CSAs are about as useful as a chocolate tea pot…

  • aviosnewbie says:

For those with a stack of gift cards, try out keep.google.com – download the app and take a photo of the card. The app will ‘grab’ all text from the card. And if you then login on keep.google.com from your laptop, everything will get synced. Then copy paste all the codes & PINs into an excel file with dates & amount. Then you’re good to go until the next offer for 8 points comes along 🙂 Rinse & repeat. (this won’t be useful for Morrison’s cards because they work only at the store, and not online)

    • KBuffett says:

I noticed Uber gift cards available at Morrison’s today. May be useful to some.

    • Reney says:

I don’t understand what this advice does? Does it make it easier for me to spend any gift cards I have online?

      • AL says:

It helps you digitise a stack of physical cards and keep reference to the code and expiry date, such that you can track a bit easier, too. If it’s still going, Gyft (for Android and iOS) did this in an app about five years ago.

  • Stu N says:

If I get a refund onto a BAPP card that puts me in -ve Avios, then cancel the card, do they claw back the Avios from BAEC account or anything?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

No they should leave it. Even better solution to avoid red flags is cancel the card before the refund hits

    • LessCleverAndrew says:

I believe they keep track of a rolling net balance. There was an HfP article a few days back. Though the article dealt with what happens if you close the card and then get a refund. They might claw back points within the same statement cycle (I stand corrected on this).

      • Stu N says:

Thanks, card has been almost dormant for a little while so no balance or Avios awaiting transfer to speak of. We’re awash with Avios and 2-4-1s so no point paying for a card we aren’t using at the moment.

    • Anna says:

No – OH’s BAPP has been in and out of negative avios for the past 18 months because of all the refunds we’ve had! No effect on BAEC account.

  • Sprout says:

Could anyone advise if it’s possible for me to make a Virgin points redemption for my son and his girlfiend (on KLM). I wouldn’t be travelling.
    Thanks

    • Memesweeper says:

I’ve made multiple redemptions for others including on Virgin, but never on KLM with Virginpoints. I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t possible, but you may need to call or WhatsApp them.

  • Jonathan says:

After some recommendations on family hotels to stay at in Dubai for a week in May with 2 young children please? Thanks

    • blenz101 says:

If you could give some more information on your shortlist then I am sure you will get some good advice. Any particular area of Dubai or attractions you are intrested in? What is your budget per night? Any particular chain of hotels?

  • Shaw West says:

£12 for 12 Weeks and £20 cash back on Spectator. I hope they send the £20 voucher. Cheated me last time

  • Shaw West says:

Morrison 10% off on Platinum. The bubggers haven’t charged me yet for a delivery on 11/9. This is cheating
