We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • Creatine King says:

If i cancel a BA hol and get the deposit as a FTV. Can I definitely use it to reduce the money owed on a new booking?? Thanks

    • Anna says:

Yes – you can use it on any new booking as far as I can tell. I used £1500 to get refunds on the cash element of new avios bookings.

      • Creatine King says:

Thanks. Chat claiming it needs to be a new booking. Not applied to one I’ve already paid the deposit on.

        • RK1 says:

I have done this twice in the last few weeks. I just emailed BA Holidays with the FTV ref and referenced the newly booked holiday. Both times they emailed back to confirm all ok.

        • Anna says:

They talk rubbish. One of my vouchers was applied 3 weeks ago to an avios booking I made back in April. Just do it by email, they don’t check what the new booking reference refers to.

  • SHK says:

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I have Curve metal linked to Virgin Atlantic basic credit card. I have already hit the £20000 spend target for this year for the free ticket voucher. I intend to make Stocks and Shares ISA investments on Vanguard. I wonder if people could share their experience of topping up Vanguard ISA with Curve- what cc can I link Curve to without being charged for the cash advance?
    Thanks

    • fivebobbill says:

Far as I’m aware curve no longer works with vanguard, or at least it stopped working with my Hilton a while back…

    • Toppcat says:

Comments on here suggest you can’t use Curve with Vanguard any longer. I have recent experience of transactions working fine with Fidelity and with Interactive Investor, if that is helpful?

      • SHK says:

Thank you. I shall have a look. Admittedly v new to this Stocks and shares ISA stuff and need to research Fidelity and Interactive Investor. Thanks again

      • Andrew H says:

I can’t get VA+/Curve to work with ii or PrimaryBid

    • Fair Dinkum says:

Can you top up a Fineco ISA with a debit card?

  • Paul says:

YouFirst – I think this is the best benefit of flying first class with BA.

I have always found them to be so helpful.

Just rebooked 5 x first class returns LHR to SYD for next Jul/Aug. Booked in avios 50 % off sale. No questions ask. No charges. Very straight forward. Very quick.

    • Babyg says:

I wish i had of had the foresight to book LHR-SYD first during the 50% sale! Amazing!

    • Jonathan says:

Interesting to hear of success with this as lots of reports (& personal experience) recently of hitting brick wall with requests to reschedule beyond 1 year from ticketing. I’ve drawn a blank both on Gold line & with You First.

  • TimM says:

Over 400 comments on the daily chat – surely time for a proper forum?

    • Char Char says:

first rule of comments, don’t talk about forums

    • Can says:

First rule of forums, don’t bring it up on comments!

    • Gary says:

Might get shot for saying this. Actually find the chit chat & flipping back/forth in between the pages (esp after a luncheon) quite enjoyable and may miss it if there was a forum.

    • CarpalTravel says:

To be fair, probably 100 of those comments are people correcting their typos from a previous posting. 😉

  • S says:

Both legs of my upcoming LHR-OPO got cancelled yesterday. The only available option with BA was to fly out 1 day early and also return 1 day early. Is BA on the hook for additional hotel/meal cost incurred due to having to travel out 1 day earlier? It is with 14+ day notice but I think this is a duty of care provision so the notice period is not really relevant.

    • Sean says:

yes – but presumably offset by 1 day less hotel and meal as travelling back 1 day earlier.

    • Lady London says:

I have a nasty feeling the actual text of EU261 only refers to that part of duty of care if shifted to a later flight. I’d suggest you check the exact wording.

    • Lady London says:

No need for avios seat a availability any seat being sold in same cabin you have a right to if they cancelled you. So I’d call anyway.

      • meta says:

BA at it again with OPO. How long did the route last? 2, 3 weeks?

@LadyLondon yes, I believe BA is on the hook for duty of care even if a day earlier.

However, if you booked refundable hotels and you can change them now, then you have to be reasonable and minimise damages.

  • Doommonger says:

Been a bad couple of weeks for the doomster, two school chums have passed away in their mid fifties, so a bit of a wake up call, I have therefore heeded Mrs Doomsters advice and have embarked on on a diet. I will be providing periodic updates on my progress (or lack of it) on an occasional basis.
    That is all.

    • bafan says:

Very sorry to hear that. My Mum is 48 and recently got diagnosed with Skin Cancer and Type 2 Diabetes (she is very overweight) and we’re embarking on a healthy eating plan for her too. I’m 28 and pretty fit because of my own pre-existing conditions, up until I was diagnosed I was pretty lax too about my health but not these days – I guess my point is that life comes at you really fast but eating properly and regular exercise really does change the game for your overall health.

      • Amy C says:

I’m so fed up of being a bloater that I’ve started the holy grail of fatties. Saxenda injections. Very costly but does seem to be a bit magic!

    • Craig says:

Good luck, managed to lose 50lbs last year although I’ve put about a third of it back on. Have a look at the Hairy Dieters cook books.

    • Simon says:

Good luck !! Story of my life – Eat less. Move more. Easier said than done

    • Anna says:

Sorry to hear about your friends, Doomster, I look forward to following your progress. Please share any successful strategies!

    • Louise K says:

      Sorry to read this.

Please look at the Second Nature programme. It’s not really a diet but a lifestyle change. Food is lovely.

    • barnaby100 says:

Have you looked at the fast 800?
Friend has just lost 3 stone in 2 months and I dropped a stone in 4 weeks and half a stone in the next month. Very easy to do as basically you end up not hungry.

    • CarpalTravel says:

So sorry to hear this, last year and the year before I lost two close friends both in their 40’s, so I really get it. I have lost 2stone and can run over 10k now, something I couldn’t even do when at school. Be realistic, be determined. You have my best wishes.

  • Mouse says:

Good news from the BBC’s coverage of the Health Secretary’s speech:

“Javid: Those who want PCR tests removed for travel ‘will be pleased’

“A quick rewind to the Commons a little earlier when the health secretary was saying there would be an update on rules for international travel ahead of a formal review point on 1 October – and he suggested PCR tests for fully vaccinated travellers would be scrapped in favour of cheaper lateral flow tests.

“Asked by Conservative MP Huw Merriman whether he would consider moving to lateral flow tests instead, Javid said: ‘I don’t want to pre-empt the statement by the transport secretary but I believe that when he makes that statement, he [Merriman] will be pleased.'”

  • Shaw West says:

How many days, after the first txn, to see the offers in BAPP card?
