Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

You can pay my tax, PAYE and VAT bills for the next year and we can split the saving. Would be a four figure earner for you 🙂

    • TGLoyalty says:

Why wouldn’t you just use horizon backed by curve

    • Alex says:

      Hahaha. Deal 😂

There doesn’t seem to be a fair use clause yet, but something tells me one will get introduced mighty quickly

    • Alex says:

There’s a very detailed list of exclusions BTW. Seems like they’ve done their homework.

  • Paul says:

For those that have recently checked into a hotel in France, is the check-in process any stricter than usual? Wondering if a second named guest could check in without the lead so as to enjoy their respective elite benefits. I know that’s not much of an issue in the UK, where as in Spain you may run into an issue there.

In previous years I’ve booked small flights across asia using avios and they have always come with free baggage. American Airlines not offering this for US domestics, has this always been the case, or is it new? I thought that was a genuine perk of booking award tickets.

how did you enroll to the trial?

    Sainsbury’s MC offer:
Purchased a 250 Christmas saver card in with a futher 150 supermarket spend. Any first hand experience whether this will trigger the “£400 in first 2 months” spend target ?

T+C’s specifically exclude “Sainsbury’s e-Gift Cards”, but to me an instore saver card is not an e-Gift card.

    PCR test

Sorry for asking this question again. Our flight to Spain will be on next Saturday. Having searching a lot online but still very confused, can someone please help to suggest when is best to book the fit to fly PCR and Day 2 test? Any good test company to recommend?

First time to travel near two years and bit nervous. Much appricated.

    • Rich says:

You don’t need to book it until you come to fill in your passenger locator form – which can’t be done until 48 hours before your flight anyway.

I would hold off booking anything until later in your trip. Nothing to be gained, and requirements might change or be lifted in the meantime.

We were in Portugal for a 2-night trip over the weekend. We used Qured. They posted our fit-to-fly (Antigen – not sure if Spain accepts these?) kits the same day (and we booked our testing time slot as soon as we bought the kits). for the fit-to-fly on Friday afternoon.

My appointment was at 13:00, done my 13:10. Uploaded the image of my negative test at 13:25 and I had my certificate by 13:35. Faultless, if a shade more expensive than others.

I would imagine it would be equally faultless on the way home (we didn’t need a test to return as our trip was only 2 nights so we could use our first test in both directions). My advice is to book your video slot ASAP however as they do book up.

Day 2 test due to be taken by tomorrow – it’s not yet arrived so only time will tell…

for to fly not required to Spain if fully vaccinated and it can be Anti Gen if not vaccinated

Test back to U.K. doesn’t need to be PCR either I used Chronomics but project screen is a good alternative about £20-25 and need to be taken with you. Or you can go somewhere local and they’ll charge 25-35 euro but I don’t know what part of spin you are visiting so could be more difficult to find.

Randox sells days 2 tests for £43 or expert medical for £28 but just buy it a couple days before you return as there’s no need to buy in advance.

      • Peter says:

That’s a good news if Fit to Fly is not needed for Spain as we both double vaccined. We are planning to go to Canary Islands.

    • Tracey says:

Use nationwide pathology for day 2, £40 each, easy website and package includes pre paid return postage through Royal Mail priority boxes.

  • Peter says:

Thanks Rich. Fingers crossed if the requirements might be lifted in the meantime.

The question is if 48 hours are enough to book the test, receive the test sample, deliver them back and get the results? Thanks again.

    • Rich says:

Perhaps crossed wires – I’m talking about the Day 2 test. You don’t really need to worry about timings.

Say you’re flying home on Sat. You can’t fill in your PLF until Thu anyway. Book the test on Thu, and it will probably be waiting for you in the doormat when you get home. You have until Mon to take it.

    • Rich says:

For your lateral flow test (before your flight home) you can either buy one to take with you, or get it done at a pharmacy/ airport in Spain.

Buying one now is probably easier, but leaves you out of pocket if the requirement is dropped

      • Sam G says:

Have a research online – we did ours locally in Spain this week, it was next to a supermarket 5 mins walk from where we were staying, popped in and got swabbed and they had my certificate ready by the time I’d bought a few bits next door. For me much easier than messing about with videos/photos & worrying I’d have an issue with the test kit etc

I took NHS tests to do before I went for my appointment as I wouldn’t want to be surprised by being positive at the clinic!

    • Craig says:

I fly out in 12 days, holding off until the last minute. At the moment fit to fly would be £22.40 whereas I’m guessing about €30 max in Tenerife. It’s worth the small gamble that tests will be dropped between now and early October. As stated above, I’ll book the Day 2 test much closer to the time.

Took out the virgin reward+ card a month ago. 15k bonus and monthly points swept over today. Just been sent this email:

We’ve made some important changes to your Virgin Atlantic Credit Card Terms since you opened your account. These came into effect on 5 August 2021 so it’s important to understand what they mean for you. You can see exactly what’s changed below – or view your full Terms here.

Due to the change, could I cancel that card and get a refund of (~ 11/12 x 160) and keep the miles? Anyone got a refund due to change of Ts and Cs since 5th August?

    • Reney says:

Did you take the card out before the 5th August? You said a month, which would be after the 5th. Which in theory meant you signed up to the new T&C.

      • G says:

Applied on 10/08. Going through the Ts and Cs sent with the card, they are the old ones, so what they have emailed today is indeed a change to existing Ts and Cs.

    • Rob says:

As you have the right to close the card I think the Ombudsman would back you in getting a fee refund.

      • G says:

Thanks Rob. Would any activity on the card from now on equal acceptance? I still need to put through another few k to get the voucher
