We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi do the Hero rates offered by Marriott earn points and count towards elite status ?

If they do , do they take longer to post ..

I booked a regular Marriott rate and the points posted 24 hours after check out . 5 days have passed when I used the HJH rate and they have not posted

    • Harry T says:

HJH definitely counts towards earning elite nights and points – I’ve used it numerous times. I suspect the points not posting is unrelated to the rate. Best to contact Marriott Bonvoy Assist on Twitter via direct messaging.

Hi Harry I’m not on Twitter I guess I’ll have to report a missing stay once the 10 days have passed. I’m currently at the glasshouse (autograph) in Edinburgh using the the HJH rate , hopefully this stay will post …

        • Harry T says:

How are you finding the Glasshouse? I’ve just checked out of the Sheraton Grand in Edinburgh.

There is a missing points form on the Bonvoy website you can use, but I think it forces you to wait ten days after your stay before you can submit it. That’s why I normally use Twitter.

Hi Harry … mmm glasshouse not so good , bar only open for 2 hours in the eve, restaurant only open for breakfast , hotel is short of staff. rooms are being cleaned up to 1800 each day and not to a good standard … numerous guests have been complaining about issues at breakfast and the issues with housekeeping. Staff are nice , they seems to be doing a bit of everything including cleaning rooms.

Plus as a plat or higher they give you the comp breakfast AND the 1000 points or a food/beverage credit (no point using that as bar isn’t open for long) and a drinks voucher

          • BP says:

That sounds like a poor experience. I’m staying there in a few weeks time but fortunately it’s really only for a place to sleep as I’m at a wedding all day and it finishes at 1 am. £89 on the HJH rate and 5 minutes walk from the wedding reception so I’m sure I won’t be too unhappy.

Advice on London Hilton hotels. Hilton Diamond. We stayed at the Conrad last timw we were in London and the lounge offering was a bit meagre. Got another 3 night stay coming up in October and looking at Hilton Park Lane or Bankside (or back to Conrad?). Any suggestions?
Bankside location not a deal breaker.

    • Munch says:

Stayed at the Bankside in August. Breakfast was good, wide selection, eggs cooked to order etc. Used the lounge, again okay, couple of hot items and great service topping up drinks. Checking in we were given a glass of bubbles, the warmest welcome I’ve received at any hotel this year and an upgrade to an executive room. Used a combination of points and cash rate (using the Amex offer).

    • VerdantBacon says:

Bankside is absolutely the best Hilton property in London, great lounge, great breakfast.

Was there a few weeks ago and the lounge has been reopened, breakfast full self serve (though no honey oat granola back yet!).

Got a three category upgrade as a diamond into a one bedroom king suite last stay.

      • Harrier25 says:

After further investigation I know exactly where The Bankside is and we did see it when we were there the other week. It’s around the back of the Tate Modern on the South Bank. Although it may be a nice hotel unfortunately it’s position is nowhere near as good. Stay at the Trafalgar St James, which is opposite Nelson’s Column with a fantastic rooftop bar.

    • SteveJ says:

Curio Trafalgar gets rave reviews on here. Not been but I’ve made a mental note to check it out.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

I’m one of those reviews 🙂
It would always be my first choice, although base room availability is not always present – at least when I’m travelling. Location is of course fabulous; even base rooms are more than decent, and cooked-to-order breakfast is excellent too. One of these days I might try the Biltmore, although location isn’t the best for my needs.

      • Harrier25 says:

Stayed at the Trafalgar a weeks ago and it’s a fantastic hotel in the perfect location. Never stayed at Bankside so unable to compare at this time, but will try there at some stage.

    • Njb says:

Stated at both – Bankside was good for leaving car there and lounge. Conrad had a more upmarket feel – both in location and decor. Bankside a bit mire edgy.
Next time though want to try Trafalger St James. Rooftop var and service was exceptional when we went for lunch.

  • Tom gold says:

Would anyone have a clue if the AMEX Etihad offer will work for a flight not departing from the UK?
The T&C’s clearly say ‘departing from UK’ but they’re often inaccurate

    • John says:

The origin and destination of the ticket are passed to Amex as part of airline transactions, so Amex is likely to enforce this

    • TGLoyalty says:

Doesn’t work as per other reply. Amex get route info as an extra layer

I remember the BA offer for a single route form Gatwick not triggering for anything else

  • RJA says:

If relying on the car hire benefit on Amex Plat, do you have to use the Plat car to make the hire or is it ok if one uses another Amex card?

  • David says:

Is it possible to add non BA flights to a 241 booking ? I know I will have to pay extra avios for them but want to transit at Hong Kong and if its still closed I won’t be able to unless they are on one booking.

  • DJ says:

    Hi,

I’m considering to upgrade to the BA Premium card. Just wondering, does the BA Premium card usually gets better Amex offers over the free one?

    Thanks

    • Jonathan says:

Some of the juiciest offers are restricted to the expensive (Plat/Centurion) cards but they’re the pseudo retention offers like 100% back at Harrods/Waitrose/Marriott etc.

For the general day to day spending I’ve seen no correlation between quality of offers & level of card. I’ve had just about every AmEx going & the better offers (for me) like Mr Porter, Hyatt, IHG etc have appeared on free & paid cards.

I do think it helps to keep rotating cards if you use the offers a lot though as the higher value ones will often not reappear for a while on a card once you’ve used whereas a new card seems to give you a clean slate.

    • LS says:

Agreed. Don’t factor in quality of offers in deciding whether to upgrade.

Four Points Sheraton and Courtyard Gatwick – are these both quarantine hotels? If so, any news on when they re-open for non-plague customers?
