We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone with experience of travel to Canada since opening to UK and other travellers? The preflight declaration with the need to provide a quarantine plan if needed is putting me off. Thanks

    • James says:

From what I’ve heard of travellers who’ve done this it really is just a case of saying where you’d quarantine if you test positive.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Correct – just the same as how you’re asked on the PLF for where you would quarantine on return and on the day 2 test order

  • ATP says:

Hi everyone, currently looking at my first Sleeper Service BA flight from Dubai. Is the difference in service that the lights turn off immediately with no dinner served and they just let you sleep until just before landing?

    TIA

    • Andrew says:

Basically, it’s an excuse not to load a full dinner service. A light meal is still available and full bar service, as is breakfast. But it’s not a full evening meal they offer.

      • ATP says:

Thanks! Yet another facet on BA’s cost-cutting agenda I suppose…

        • Genghis says:

Not really. Eat beforehand then actually sleep on the sleeper service. I’ve done this flight and had a decent sleep.

      • Jonathan says:

I thought they’d canned the formal sleeper services where they offered full meal in lounge & only option on board was a single tray light meal with breakfast cards collected pre takeoff.

Personally thought they were a fantastic idea for East coast TATL’s & was really annoyed when they went back to offering full meal/bar service as there’s always 1 person who wants to eat & drink every last drop/crumb available despite filling their boots in lounge.

Dubai’s a predominantly leisure destination I guess so less people needing to head straight to work from Heathrow but still antisocial to fail to recognise everyone else is trying to sleep around you while you incessantly buzz for another G&T then stagger to bathroom every hour. (Not aiming that rant at any individuals here).

        • Chrisasaurus says:

Yeah I’ll concede to being that guy a few years back in F coming back from BOS…

    • John says:

It departs at 1-2am, ok it’s only 10-11pm in the UK but do you really want to eat a full meal when you could have eaten in the lounge or before coming to the airport?

I took it a few years ago and they served full breakfast, so not just “letting you sleep until landing” (unless you want to)

  • Phil W says:

Off to Austria soon 🤞and I want to double check with you kind people my understanding of what is required. Our route is EDIFRASZG return.

    Outbound –
    – Complete German Digital Registration to transit FRA.

    – No registration or test requirements for entertaining Austria as we are double vaxxed.

    Return –
    – Pre-Departure Test Booked (Qured)

    – Day 2 Test (Yet to Book)

    – UK PLF

What I’m not clear on is whether I need to complete the German Digital Registration to transit FRA on the return.

    TIA for your input.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

If in doubt just complete the German form both ways. I don’t know about the German requirements but Spain and Italy require their PLFs completed when arriving from any international destination even if it’s Schengen. Madrid airport checks this is complete, Bologna doesn’t for Schengen flights due to the way the airport is set up but you’re still meant to complete it so you might see spot checks.

    • andyT says:

      Travelled LHR/FRA/SZG last Saturday.
      Outbound:
Show vax cert at LHR (check-in), nothing else required either to transit FRA or enter Austria

      Travelled SZG/FRA/LHR last Thursday.
      Inbound:
Show Pre- Departure test and UK PLF at both SZG (check-in) and FRA (gate)
Day 2 test needs to be pre-booked for UK PLF.

      Easy peasy.

  • George K says:

Hey folks – a friend of mine created a BA account in February (with a view to align it with her partner’s TP year end of the same month), but only just realised that her TP collection month has been set to end in… August!

Any idea why that could have happened, and what can be done to rectify it?

    • Kwisstan says:

When did she take a flight? I think that is when the year is set, not on opening.

To my knowledge, nothing can be done to change

      • George K says:

Yes, I think that tallies with her first flight. Drat, I got this completely wrong, it would appear. I was convinced that TP year starts on account opening, not on first flight.

        • TGLoyalty says:

It’s not a bad think to be 6 months apart. Only 1 needs to be silver for both to get the perks when you fly together.

    • John says:

I thought this changed in 2016. Did she open the account recently or a long time ago?

I opened my first BA account in 2011 and it had an undesirable year end because of when I took my first flight.

In 2015 I closed the account by post (move avios to iberia, forfeit lifetime tier points (didn’t exist back then)) then opened a new account in 2016.

I booked a flight to activate the new account with my desired year end, but after I had boarded the train to Manchester I noticed the BA account already had the desired dates. So I still took the flight, not sure if the date would have changed if I didn’t fly

  • NSL says:

Amex retention bonuses. What are the T&Cs? I don’t plan to but what stops me from cancelling the card straight after a retention award? Is there a clawback?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

No claw back and no real T and Cs

    • SteveJ says:

No Ts & Cs but think about your relationship with Amex. They may never offer you one again if you take the proverbial.

  • Gormlesstraveller says:

Is the seat number on the PLF important enough to fill in a new form if it changes? Thanks

    • Yorkieflyer says:

Nah wouldn’t bother, Ryanair now only allows random seat checkin 24 hours before so filled up PLF at my convenience after 48?hours and picked a seat at random 😀

    • Rob says:

Yes if not vaccinated as it may impact whether you must isolate.

      • Phil W says:

Or not, depending on whether it was the correct incorrect seat # that was in proximity and whether other pax decide to randomly move seats.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Who knows if they even check you’ve filled in multiple PLF

Had a friend who was contacted for a flight he didn’t actually take (he filled in a new PLF after changing flight to land at another U.K. airport)

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Or whether someone else must if you test positive – which could really screw someone else over if you don’t do it properly

  • Dominic says:

Hi all – wondering if anyone has had multiple flights close to each other in a UK > country 1> UK > country 2 format with a couple of days in between?

Looking to fly to a green list place, then return, then fly somewhere else. I think:
    – Test upon return to UK
    – Make sure first country is not on the second country’s red list
    – Comply with testing reqs for both countries

Anything else I should be aware of?

    • Memesweeper says:

Make sure you understand the implications of testing positive at the various times/places it could happen, and have a plan for that.

      • Dominic says:

Thanks – indeed, that is an additional hurdle. I’m double vaxxed and had COVID 6.5 months ago, so feel *reasonably* safe, but definitely no guarantees that I won’t test positive based on that.

        • Bill says:

If you are in the UK for a brief stay between country 1 and 2 you might be able to enter “transit” on the PLF

  • CF Frost says:

Very fine print, bit MSE, but nectar…. Does the 3x Sainsbury’s energy multiplier apply on top of the multiples already applied? So does a 2x promotion on a product become 6x? Not long switched supplier.

    • sloth says:

      no

    • AJA says:

And it’s not really 3x. It’s an extra 2x points on top of the points you get with the Nectar card. eg Spend £80 = 80NP and then 160NP from the energy multiplier. Also it is added once a month on all spend during the month although a bonus is that it seems to include fuel spend at their attached petrol stations too.
