The HfP chat thread – Saturday 11th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Just bitten the bullet and taken out a Platinum Amex. Hopefully the benefits will easily cover the fee. First year certain they will; jury’s out for me thereafter. Fingers crossed I get a spend £200 get £200 back offer….

    • Lady London says:

Phone – ideally very quickly – after putting a few spends on the card if you can. A couple of people reported on here it was added on new cards when they phoned although that had been reported as not happening, on earlier offers.

    Hello

How long does it take for Marriott points to post

I checked out of at moxy Stratford on friday and these posted today

I checked out of great northern London (tribute ) on Thur and these havnt posted yet – this is no longer showing at all on my account ???

    • Harry T says:

Unfortunately, it can be quite variable! Most of them seem to post for me either the day after I check out or the day after the day after. That’s based on quite a bit of recent experience. If they haven’t posted after a few days, you can contact Marriott Bonvoy Assist on Twitter with a copy of your folio and they will post the stay for you.

Live music two nights in a row, good evening from the Bomber Command Memorial in Lincoln. Bottle of Just Jane, pork scratching and folk music.

  • Alex says:

Just arrived LHR T5 from CFU. Time from off plane, shuttle and into car about 35 mins with luggage to collect 👌

  • Matthew says:

Anyone know if One&Only Mirage Dubai offer discounts on drinks?! My wife is going next week and I’ve just seem the bar prices! Looked at the entertainer app but not on there. Prob have to suck it up and pay the crazy prices….

    • Linda says:

Can’t help you but I remember having to pay £11 for a glass of house white at The Jumeriah Hilton three years or so back. Not being too much of a drinker I went teetotal for the rest of the stay!

    • KBuffett says:

Dubai is not cheap, full stop. Is price sensitive, best to go to more local or mainstream bars/hotels rather than 5* Deluxe

    • HH says:

I was last there Nov 2019, and no there weren’t any deals – it was around £14 a cocktail, which isn’t out of the ordinary. Burj Al Arab at £28 a drink was eye-watering though…

  • Phil says:

A heads up if you’re flying out of Gatwick North…

Business class check-in took 60 minutes yesterday. Initially only one person on check-in and the queue not helped by having people in the business class queue in WT and WTP who had spent over the amount needed to get business class check-in.

Glad I didn’t bother with Veri-Fly. The “dedicated” check-ins had no one on them. The normal check-ins had Gatwick staff checking paperwork as you joined the queue anyway – so there was no impact on check-in speed.

Just tried a little gamble and it worked.

    1. buy a cheap Ryanair flight which going to be canceled. At the
moment the solid idea is London Stansted to Podgorica, Montenegro.
Flight still on sale from October 3rd and most dates are priced at
9.99 per person. There are few chances those flights going to happen
while Montegero is in red list countries for the UK.

    2. Once a flight is canceled you have an option to get a voucher, cash
refund, or free change for ANY Ryanair flight. You choose to change.
Here is what it says in the cancelation email:

Change your canceled flight (for free)

We are allowing customers to change their canceled flight to another
date or time on the original route or to any other route within our
network. You can move your flight to any date within 14 days before or
after your canceled flight. There are no flight change fees and you do
not have to pay any fare difference.

you can change online via manage my booking
section with 14 days window without any hassle. For a flight further
than 14 days forward, you need to contact customer service via web
chat or phone and they do pretty much any date within the published
    schedule.

for October half-term holidays, the best option would be
to book Stansted-Porgorica for 10-17th October, then, after
cancelation change it online for October 23-30th or October 24-31th
flight to any Greek island or Malta or Sicily which all priced above
    100 gbp per flight.

    • Anna says:

Result – where did you change to?! A few of us did a similar thing with EJ earlier this year, booked £40 return to the cheapest destination in Spain then moved it to a popular destination at peak time (had to be within the same country but plenty of choice with Spain).

      • Alex says:

changed to Birmingham – Chania October 23-30th booking was for 4 people and changed via web chat as more than 14 days ahead

      • Alex says:

with EJ also played this game last year, was able to move to a different country, canceled flight LTN – Venice changed to LTN – Corfu for May half term as a member of EJ Flight Club, they have a dedicated phone number.

    • Bill says:

Is this policy on their website ?

      • Alex says:

not sure about the website, it is on the cancellation email, full text here:

We regret to advise you that due to ongoing changes to travel restrictions, at very short notice, we have no alternative and are forced to cancel your flight(s):

RK7961 from London (Stansted) to Podgorica on 26Sep21 RK7962 from Podgorica to London (Stansted) on 28Sep21.

Please inform any other customers who may be travelling in your party of these cancellations.

We are notifying you today to inform you that you can choose between a full reimbursement of the cost of your ticket, or the option of re-routing as well as reasonable care (as detailed below).

1.Change your cancelled flight (for free)

We are allowing customers to change their cancelled flight to another date or time on the original route or to any other route within our network.
