Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

VS Flight cancelled, they have offered an open ticket to re book later or a refund. The dates I want to rebook for are 11 and a half months away so Virgin say I have to take the open ticket option and rebook when the flight is released. Problem is when I go to convert it, the voucher terms say I have to pay the difference in price, is this correct as the flight is cancelled. Dates I am looking for are the end of September 2022

    • Andrew says:

So basically they are offering you a FTV.

      • gav says:

Yea, but I will have to pay the difference with the voucher according to the terms, according to Virgin on Watsapp I Wont, if I take the voucher I wave my rights to a refund.
Flights are a lot more expensive next year so don’t want to pay extra if I should not have too.

        • Lady London says:

You should not be asked for for money or avios/miles/points by an airline regardless of the price difference when exercising your right to choose a later date for your ticket to be rebooked to if it was the airline that cancelled your flight. EU261.

Virgin has been trying this and it’s illegal

    • Travel Strong says:

Just wait til flights are released. I am sat on a few cancelled bookings and haven’t had any pressure to do anything with them.

      • Travel Strong says:

On re-reading… sounds like this advice may be too late, if you have already accepted another option.

        • gav says:

I haven’t accepted it yet, was going too until I saw the terms, which were different to what the agent told me!

So you think just wait, then call back up?

          • Tom1 says:

When they cancelled mine – they automatically moved me to a flight the previous day – so I was forced to do something – couldn’t sit and wait.

I actually just booked as far out as I can go (ie 331 days or whatever it is) and then will move them again when the actual flights I want are released (I think without a fee). Mine were points flights though so I am not sure if that’s different.

    • David says:

Ask for an upgrade voucher – that used to be the deal if you took it as FTV and not a refund .

      • ChasP says:

There must be many thousands of upgrade vouchers floating around making them close to worthless

Have Creation stopped working with Curve ? I have IHG creation credit card linked to my curve card and recevied the following text yesterday: With immediate effect we will be unable to process any transactions using your Curve Card where the transaction is allocated to your Creation issued credit card.

Anyone else received the same ?
Any recommendations for another curve type card I can link to my ihg creation card ?

    Many thanks

    • Duncan says:

Yes, everyone got that yesterday it seems (hence the 1000+ comments on yesterday’s chat thread). According to Curve on Twitter, they’re talking to Creation about it now, though what’ll actually come of that I’ve no idea.

Fingers crossed, as I quite like the IHG card but the lack of Apple Pay is a bit of a deal-breaker!

      • Jon says:

Thanks – Sorry, should have checked in yesterday !

      • Steve S says:

        Not everyone

      • David says:

Real fail to see the obsession with apple/Google pay. It’s helpful, don’t get me wrong, by we’re talking about a thin, small piece of plastic, just put in you pocket when you go out it’s hardly the end of the world.

  • Dave says:

So my wife’s IHG black credit is up for renewal in October. As I have one as well we will really struggle to hit the £10k next year for the free night now we can’t use overseas spend etc via curve.

She’s hit the £10k this year already. Is there a way she can cancel and get the free night posted before the next annual fee posts? Do creation do pro rata refunds?

  • Rui N. says:

With impeccable timing, Curve has decided that I like Ernie too much: “Curve’s core value proposition is day to day spend and we expect to see that the card is being used for. Due to the high volume of transactions to [ERNIE] we require some verification.”. Should I break the news to them?
Anyhow, I’ve seen people having this issue here before. How much of a pain are them to do the verification? I’m wondering if it is worth the trouble now that IHG is out (and VA likely soon out as well – I have a very low credit limit with them in any case)…

    • TGLoyalty says:

Send them what they want and you’ll be fine.

    • Harry T says:

Just give them the verification and diversify your day to day spend.

      • Rui N. says:

I actually do that, I use Curve for all my non-Amex spending. I think the problem is that there aren’t that many of them, and usually very low value. But all in all I’d say 40-50% of transactions in a regular month are real spending (don’t ask about the split in value, somewhat more skewed)

    • VerdantBacon says:

Just send them what they want to see, IHG via Curve might be over but that doesn’t mean you should let your Curve account get blocked. May be a use for it out there somewhere

      • Rui N. says:

You guys have convinced me, I’ll send everything to them 🙂

        • Jek says:

Send it but don’t expect any reply or action by Curve. Their support is currently nonexistent, emails are not answered, chat has been turned off and the community forum is full of complaints. I have no access my Curve Cash amount for weeks now and I don’t expect to gain access for a long time.

          • Rui N. says:

I was in touch with them late July and early August (late replacement card and reduction of daily limits) and didn’t have any problems, replied in a couple of days in all instances. I’ve never seen a chat function on the app.
(My card seems to still be active in any case)

  • Andy says:

Have hit my spend on my new BA business card, transactions have posted and have got 7500 avios showing. No 60000 bonus posted yet, anyone know how long it takes? Assume I don’t need to chase?

  • Nectar Collector says:

Has anyone got a referral code for Airtime Rewards please….about time I got round to using this little extra !Thank you….

  • VerdantBacon says:

Does anyone know where to find a list of all current destinations out of LCY? Not just BA routes.

    • marcw says:

You can use flightradar24.com/data/airports/lcy/routes to check non-stop destinations for the next 7 days.

Alternatively, you can also use Google flights, LCY as origin and “Anywhere” as your destination (then you can filter “non-stop”). This works best for specific dates.

    • SwissJim says:

London City Airport website. Not well signposted, but use Timetables section…

    • VerdantBacon says:

Thanks for all the replies all, very useful!

  • Wheezer says:

I used to use Curve and Creation to pay my taxes. Any suggestions of another card I could use with Curve to do this now that I can’t do it through Creation?
