We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi Rob, so what happened to the Part 2 of the Virgin-KLM long haul article? I am debating between BA/Air France/Delta long haul, and if you’re planning to release it in the next few days, I can hold off my (speculative) redemptions.

    • Rob says:

It was going to run today but then the Three article during the day yesterday wrecked our schedule as I couldn’t move Priority Pass today.

It will be Monday morning as it is a bit of a waste to run it over the weekend.

  • Claire says:

Does anyone know if you can use evouchers for a ba flight on loganair. I probably need to cancel a ba booking and am looking to rebook for Christmas but it’s from Southampton. I can book on the ba website as they have a link. Also if I had to cancel the loganair flight can I move it without penalty (I’d be booking Gheorghe middle fare which seems to have some flexibility but Website is not very clear. Thanks

  • Claire says:

Should say booking their middle fare

  • Mike says:

Now its over I would love to hear who recycled the most money and who generated the most points via Curve MS (some people were posting about recycling £5K a week so its bound to be huge amounts)

    • WaynedP says:

      Too soon 🤦‍♂️

    • Harry T says:

This sounds like the kind of silliness that is leading to certain avenues being shut down… but someone please tell me again that code words are silly

      • VerdantBacon says:

We had people here paying off their IHG card with the IHG card backing Curve. It’s that level of sheer stupidity that ruins it for all. Never talk about MS in an open forum, even with code words. You never know how many people are watching and just waiting to jump on the next thing while taking the absolute piss. The best kept secrets are the ones you tell nobody about.

        • TGLoyalty says:

“ We had people here paying off their IHG card with the IHG card backing Curve” a recipe for disaster.

        • ThePenguin says:

No, it was all ok. “IHG knew all about it and were fine with it” we need those intelligent people to come back on and explain what’s happening?

          • Rob says:

IHG will be delighted. The person doing £700k of premium bonds per year was, alone, making them £5k in points purchases.

          • David says:

Some of them are posting, but seem to have forgotten they previously ever said this.
Also, pre 9/9, a big argument for the code words by the proponents of such was to stop the ability to be found easily in Google searches and come to the attention of the companies concerned as the reason for not using real names on here (as opposed to just trying to disguise what was being talking about to others), which also now seems forgotten.
As we know from yesterday’s comment from Rob, this change appears to have been led by NS&I who will be aware not because of the use or non-use of code words here, but the suspicious activity into and out of Ernie and the savings account, and people taking the proverbial.
The code words were only ever good for stopping 5 year olds cottoning one and making some feel like they’re in special club IMO.

      • meta says:

This is better not discussed at all anywhere public. Code words or not.

        • Anna says:

Agreed, especially when some people think it’s fine to demand that information is shared freely and resort to abuse when it isn’t offered up transparently!

          • David says:

That’s surprising Anna. I’m pretty sure you didn’t discover these opportunities yourself and benefited from learning about them here from others. Truly fascinating that you and many other now regular but posters seem to want to pull the draw-bridge up to others on this. In any event, it’s all a bit late now to be arguing the toss as I imagine the remaining routes will be largely closed down in the not too distant future.

        • GaryC says:

MS is clearly a zero sum game, and if an individual is profiting, it means some other party is losing out, in this case Creation. If we define “better” as bringing the most utility to the most parties, It would be “better” if no one participated in MS in the first place. The argument that it was somehow ok when only a small number of people were “in the know” was always specious and self-serving. This outcome was wholly predictable, and has simply made Curve a much less attractive proposition for the majority of users. So well done on that! The only silver lining is a likely reduction in these comments sections being full of the childish codeword nonsense, and every 5th comment being related to MS.

          • David says:

            Well said, Gary.

          • JDB says:

Well said @GaryC! Their own hubris / oversharing started the slow death of their golden goose, but don’t expect the MS comment volume to subside just yet as I think yesterday’s text was just the apéritif, so more bleating to come.

      • Andrew says:

I think the code words were pretty easy for the companies to crack too so was quite pointless using them.

        • marcw says:

Codes only work if a small minority know them. If the majority know them, then it’s pointless. Seeing how many comments there were yesterday, I’d say about 80% (if not more) knew what was going on.

          • Youllnever says:

That and the fact that people had explained what each one meant when asked meant there really wasn’t any point.

        • Lady London says:

It’s only the automated searches this helps to keep stuff away from for longer. Humans who participate are expectedvtp easily work it out -so code words are deliberately not made hard for anyone who’ll apply a small amount of nanocandles of brain power.

If it was meant to exclude anyone other than the completely lazy or brainless or vulture crumb pickers for hotukdeals then the code words would have been much harder.

        • Mike says:

I did suggest the code words were changed each month !

    • Paul says:

I have been doing 4k a day for past 2 years. And still am.

    • BP says:

£5 k a week? Small fry is all I’ll say!!

  • Andrew says:

I’ve never bothered with an IHG card before. With the rumours of Creation leaving the UK market, is this probably last chance to grab some IHG points?

Secondly, just curious as I used to work in banking reconciliations for a major retailer… What’s happening with Curve/Creation spend when it’s below the retailer’s floor limit? Are all Curve transactions forced through as live, or are some retailers going to have a nasty surprise in a few days?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Do retailers have floor limits these days now everything is real-time?

    • Anna says:

Only the free card is currently available to new customers, only 1 point per £1 and no free night, so limited value.

I have no idea what your second paragraph means!

    • Paul Pogba says:

You could use the Virgin cards for hotel points, if my maths is correct the premium (paid) card pays out 2.25 Hilton points per £1, or 1.125 on the free one.

    • Grant says:

In relation to your second comment, I had an instance this morning where a 99p transaction via ApplePay cleared in the shop but by the time I was half way down the street the Curve app notified me it used a backup card because the default card (IHG) declined.

      • Chrisasaurus says:

That’s not quite the question – which is could retailers approve transactions that are below the value at which they much be online authorised, only for them to be rejected if they are curve backed with creation

But Aside from my own question about that, it really is no different to any other scenario in which a txn would be declined if checked

  • Simon D says:

Morning All. Does anyone know if the semi-hidden IHG Ambassador offer is still running? Mine expires in Nov and sm thinking about renewing.

  • Rich says:

Anyone any experience with Revolut referrals?

I’ve made 2 on the £60 offer. One person completed all the required steps yesterday. Nothing showing in ‘Pending’ fit me yet.

    • TOBIAS L says:

Give it a few days. I’ve done a ton of them successfully.

If after a week or so it hasn’t landed, and you’re sure your referrals have completed the steps accurately (i.e. 3 purchases), reach out to customer service.

      • Rich says:

Thanks. Definitely done all the steps, as he’s my flatmate and I supervised!

Was expecting it to show Pending as soon as he created an account, but maybe that’s expecting too much

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

So it was you who is sending out the spam texts saying Join Revolut 😉

  • Chelseafi says:
