The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 8th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

MrsHBO has just had an email from BAEC telling her she has won 20,000 Avios (one of the 181 prizes from the prize pot of 2m Avios) from the Nectar to BA conversion she made back in July. Very unexpected and pleasing!

  • MKB says:

…especially as Amex takes zero notice of the “Trust this device” option, and I have to do Two-Factor Authentication at least half the time.

    • TGLoyalty says:

It’s Unbelievably frustrating that they seem to have implemented the worst trust this device setting in the world.

      • KBuffett says:

I’ve had no issues with AmEx remembering my Apple devices via the app.
What devices are you using, are you using the app and if not, what browser?

If you are using the same device for two logins, I believe it won’t remember the device as the information required is cleared when you login using the second login.

        • TGLoyalty says:

I use the app via 2 Apple iPhones (1 for each account)

No other banking app ever asks me to revalidate with an OTP when I haven’t changed the phone

        • KBuffett says:

TGL – have you activated FaceID login within the AmEx app? I have and don’t need further authentication

        • TGLoyalty says:

          Yes obviously.

      • Russ says:

Got to agree. It’s become so annoying that we no longer log in and we’ve gone back to paper statements. Missing out on Amex offers to.

  • Duncan says:

MKB, interesting that you have been able to have all supplementary cards on a single ID. I raised this the other day, as my husband is the secondary cardholder on my BAPP and Platinum card, and he was forced to make a separate account for each. (That’s three accounts, including one for a now-cancelled PRG card!)

  • Rob says:

I would wait, it might need a bit of time to ‘forget’ the old one.

Basically, a brand new card cannot be added to an existing account. Give it a few days, perhaps a week or so, and it can. All very weird. Happened recently with a Supp Bus Gold I issued to my wife.

    • Ryan Gill says:

Rob. Is renewing my Ambassador status now for the 15,000 points likely to make me irritable when ihg offer something better in the next few weeks? Cheers

    • Sussex bantam says:

I don’t think this is true – I’ve added lots of new cards to existing accounts. Sometimes it doesn’t work but no idea why !

  • sloth says:

not immediately but over the course of a few days, yes

  • Baji Nahid says:

I am trying to get access to shops away with virgin or trying to log into my virgin atlantic account but for some reason it is not letting me do this, been happening for a week or so. Is anyone else also experiencing problems?

    • Sina says:

just delete your cookies or use another browser!?

      • AL says:

This. The website isn’t the best – it’s got UI bugs all over the shop, too. I’ve had login problems previously, and incognito fixes it temporarily. Clearing cookies and cache fixes it long term. Admittedly, annoying.

    • Mattb says:

Have had this issue with wife’s iPhone over last few days. Fine on my Pixel and laptop.

  • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

UK SIM card tips please kind folks – I need one for occasional visits only to use in a MiFi device and ideally want a decent data tariff but also one that doesn’t need topping up every 6 months to maintain as I always forget and lose my dosh!

    • Yorkie Aid says:

I think Three is the only PAYG SIM where the credit never expires.

      • KBuffett says:

I think you still need to keep the SIM active by ensuring there is some periodic activity

        • Yorkie Aid says:

A really good option for the occasional user is the 24 month preloaded SIMs. I have had the 12GB and the 24GB versions and they are great because your use can be as sporadic as you like with no other limits other than the overall one. They can be found on Amazon and ebay. The bonus is they also include roaming in all of Three’s feel at home countries (including Guernsey).

        • John says:

Not on 3, you don’t have to do anything. I haven’t topped up for about 5 years on my main number as I also have 5 of the free data sims which still work (for those you are supposed to top up every 6 months, but again I haven’t been)

O2 doesn’t expire as long as you spend some of the credit every 6 months

    • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

      Thanks both 😀
KBuffett you are likely right – I’ll just have to set up a diary reminder !
Yorkie TYVM – those sound like they could be just the ticket 👍

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

        And cheers too John!

      • Yorkie Aid says:

You’re welcome GG. It’s been so long since I had a Sure SIM I didn’t realise that UK roaming was no longer included!

  • Nomid says:

You can ask Amex to merge them and specify which one you want to keep. I did it a few times via chat when having issues adding business Amex
