We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi folks – if signing up to ambassador to and using the free weekend night at IC, I understand it needs to be connected to a paid stay. Is there anything to stop me paying for a single night with the ambassador free night both at a weekend, and then booking additional nights on points, to continue the stay? I can’t see any reason for them to object – but I equally don’t want to be turfed out and have to change rooms! Thanks for any tips. Already spire elite if it helps…

    • meta says:

No problem. I do that all the time. I just contact the hotel a week before the stay, so they can link the reservations and let you keep the same room.

However, almost every time, I have to email Ambassador address to get points and credits for the paid night. They always credit quickly after that though.

    • ChrisC says:

If you think the AMb cert is a voucher for a single free night then you’ve misunderstood.

The free night cert is already attached to a paid night.

If you book a Friday & Saturday then the Saturday night is free. If you book a Saturday and Sunday then the Sunday night is free.

And yes you can book additional nights. The way not to be turfed out is to book the same type of room across the bookings.

      • meta says:

This goes out of the window if you don’t contact the hotel in advance and they upgrade you on the Ambassador rate and not on a reward night because they have not linked it. Contact the hotel in advance.

If I go the Chester route and the booked appt is more than 2 days out would it flag it?

    • Aston100 says:

I dare you to spell out the sites that cannot be named.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Uh?

OP is asking if they book an appointment in Chester for £20 Day 2 PCR test will it be flagged …

Reality is they won’t know when your appointment is but it’s a legal requirement to take the test on or before day 2 or face a £1000 fine. If you were to be randomly picked and it’s clear you decided to choose a provider which couldn’t do a test before day 2 it’s open shut £1k pleas

Would you bet paying £20 more vs £1k anywhere else? Just spend the extra and do it properly.

Just had Feb 2021 stay at IC Rome cancelled by central IHG command and points returned. Apologies if already mentioned, not had time to read the chat today

  • Yorkshire Rich says:

Somebody asked yesterday for me to report back in the chat thread after I had contacted Amex about downgrading my premium Amex back to the blue one.
I had no luck whatsoever, he said I couldn’t downgrade now and I could just leave and re apply for another card. I explained that if he looked at my recent spending transactions I used the card regularly but the system obviously wasn’t interested.

Might try again in a month or 2 and genuinely leave then and start again after I’ve referred a few people first and used my companion voucher that he threatened to take off me 😏

    Hi all,

confused about the cancellation policy of a BA holiday booking.

I want to book Spain to depart in 2 weeks time, however it is currently amber and the next review is sept 16th, just a few days before we would depart.

Obviously should Spain move from amber to red, we wouldn’t go, so worried about booking BA holidays now when it mentions >3 weeks notice

    Or am I missing something??

    • ChrisBCN says:

I wouldn’t worry, Spain can’t go red for the very simple reason that there isn’t anywhere near enough quarantine rooms in the UK that would be required – that’s why it hasn’t gone red throughout, even though at certain times it’s had worse numbers than other red destinations.

    • Nick says:

Yes, you’re missing the package holiday regulations that supersede any commercial policy an agent chooses to offer, and which contain conditions on ‘enjoyment of your holiday’. In practice they will allow you not to go if it goes into the red list before you depart. They’ll try to find you a suitable alternative destination, or refund if there isn’t one.

    • Sukes says:

You are missing term 2 of BA holiday’s T&C:

‘Date changes must be made, or cancellation (in exchange for a voucher) must be requested at least three weeks prior to travel. Less than three weeks’ notice will be accepted if new UK government rules are introduced within this time that prevent your trip or require you to quarantine in a designated hotel on your return.’

  • Cydney says:

Have BA fixed the Avios to Nectar instant conversions yet? I put a transfer through last week and still wating for nectar points to be credited. Does anyone know if its a full 10 day wait (including weekends) or has anyone else had them converted quicker than the 10 day wait period?
