We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi all – I need to add an infant to a long haul (Avios) booking next April. Is there any way of doing this without waiting on the phone?

As an aside – do we think South Africa will be open next April?

    • Rob says:

      No, who knows?

    • JDB says:

As Rob says, nobody knows, but I get occasional emails from Ampersand who are quite good. Last week they said :-

“ Other encouraging news regarding Southern Africa as Germany removed nine countries from the “Variant of Concern” list including South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. This decision is based on well researched and strong data from the Robert Koch Institute so we are hopeful that the UK and rest of Europe will soon follow suit.”.

Hope they are right as we have booked for next April, the last of three upcoming red list bookings.

      • EvilDoctorK says:

Ireland also removed South Africa ( and loads of other places ) off their red list about 10 days ago .. now only 6 countries in South America left on the list.

UK is really quite an outlier on the travel restrictions at this stage ( in Europe at least )

I have an ex-eu from Dublin which was priced in Euro. The flight has now been cancelled. If I take eVoucher/FTV will its value be in Euros? If so How do I use it to book ex-UK flight?

  • Reney says:

Advice pls, I need one night of hotel in Edinburgh in September. I have a 35k cap marriott voucher that expires at the end of the year and would like to use it up. I have a choice of Moxy, Marriott and Courtyard West (not the central one). Arrival day I would have dropped the car off at the airport and getting the flight out the next day at 3pm. I might go for a wonder in the morning before my flight. Which hotel do you recommend? Moxy looks the most central if I want to do some stuff in the morning.

    • Andy says:

I stayed at the Courtyard West a few times and it is fine, the rooms are modern and fairly spacious. The main location benefit for me was being able to quickly get onto the motorway.

From memory it took me about 10/15 minutes by car to get into the city centre, but it’s on the HW campus so there’s pretty frequent public transport (which I didn’t try)

    • Andrew says:

Courtyard West is out in Riccarton Campus – so not much there and you’d need a taxi to the Airport.
Marriott, it’s not far from the Airport, just walk along to Edinburgh Gateway. You’re next to the Gyle but nothing much else.

I’d go for the Moxy at Fountainbridge. It’s not far from Edinburgh sights and you can stalk walk to Haymarket in 7 minutes for the tram to the Airport.

      • EwanG says:

As an Edinburgh resident but not having stayed in any of them (have been to two, and worked along the street from the 3rd (Moxy) during construction) I agree completely with Andrew and also would stay at the Moxy.

        • Reney says:

Thanks all, have booked the Moxy.

Any good recommendations for dinner and breakfast would be much appreciated.

          • EwanG says:

Loudons for breakfast, 2 mins along the road.
Dinner – depends where you want to go and what cuisine. Some recommendations: Cafe Marlayne, Cafe St Honore, Dusit, Fishers in the City (all near to each other just N of Princes St, so 15-20 min walk from the hotel, and plenty of places for drinks before or after). Locanda di Gusti, La Casa, First Coast, Pizzeria 192, all close to each other on Dalry Road and 10 mins to hotel using shortest route (via Dalry Pl).
Been other recommendations on here over the summer including Aizle but not places I’ve been.

          • Axel says:

Deep fried Mars Bars is the staple diet in Edinburgh pal

          • Reney says:

            thanks EwanG

  • TJ says:

Any problems with using the NHS app in Croatia as proof of vaccination?

  • SteveD says:

Sorry, hopefully QQ – FT gives conflicting info:

Can a flight-only e-voucher (NOT FTV) be used as payment against a pre-existing BA Hols booking? Single passenger on the flight who is one of the travellers on the Holiday.

And if not can I ‘convert’ by booking a flight with the voucher then adding a cheap car or hotel to it?
    Many thanks.

    • mr_jetlag says:

yes, otherwise ring up BAH and explain what you’re doing they can do it for you. You will need the voucher numbers as they’re in a separate system IIRC

      • SteveD says:

Thank you. Can’t see anywhere to add a voucher so was expecting to have to ring anyway ( emoji conveying an air of sad resignation )…

  • Kevin C says:

I don’t get many offers but I did get £20 back for spending £200 at Sainsbury this summer.

  • Paul says:

Just to confirm before going ahead and purchasing! Do we think the Chester method is suffice for a Day 2 to pacify the PLF into a Scottish airport? I appreciate it’s a little bold of me.

    • Jonathan says:

Considering Scotland have been consistently stricter than England wrt all Covid matters I’d want to be saving considerably more than £20 to play that game. Big difference with EM postal & a F2F where it’ll be very easy to prove you were taking the p133.

    • BP says:

Scotland now allow you to use private day 2 testing providers.

    • Polly says:

You could always get lost on the way to Chester.

Reminds me of us all getting stuck on the M25 changing airports, and “not making the final leg” of our ex eu flights….
