Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Sunday 5th September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Talking of retention offers. I upgraded to the premier BA card the other week so I could get my companion voucher.
Is it way too early to try and get a retention bonus? Part of me does want to contact them and say “thanks but there hasn’t been any decent offers on this card since Ill go back to the free one”

    • Aston100 says:

As far as I can tell, it isn’t up to the Amex agent, but whatever the system tells them.
That said, I found the UK team would ask too many questions and spend too long talking about other options. Hence why I always hope I get an overseas agent as they seem to want to just crack on with the next caller.

    • BJ says:

Did you forget how much you need to spend per month at 1.5 avios/£ now just to offset the fee /month? That does not sound like sufficient incentive to keep the card to me.

    • Alex says:

      No retention bonus offer.

  • TPB says:

Can a supplementary card be in main cardholders name? Ive got my partner as a Platinum supp on my account – Thinking it’s worth getting a supp Gold in my name as A. It’s free, B. Easy £3k points for adding a Gold supp, C. Easy £10 a month Deliveroo credit. Am I missing something or is this correct?

    • Harry T says:

You’re not going to get any Deliveroo credit.

It’s fine to add a supp in your own name.

      • Youllnever says:

        +1. Only A and B is true.

      • Mark2 says:

You need to check that you get the points on a second supplementary card; I don’t think so.
But an extra card is useful for shop small.

        • Youllnever says:

Actually you’re right – looking at this again, I don’t believe you get another bonus after your first supplementary card. I’m assume you were looking at the first supplementary bonus for the Gold card, which doesn’t apply to you.

          • TGLoyalty says:

You do IF you didn’t get one for the first (either you upgraded and they converted the existing supp or you applied for the supp at same time as main account)

    • Polly says:

Lots do. To separate out spend, statement wise. Quite useful. Amex are used to that.

  • Benilyn says:

Anyone’s Shard Shangri-La £100 for £500 spend trigger on Amex?

  • Adam says:

Is it possible to change the return leg of a Avios companion voucher booking after the outbound flight?

  • BJ says:

Well that’s another week passed for our hobby. Between the new amex BA stuff and messing around with hotel bookings and getting the right mobile phone deal sorted out, more than enough to keep me interested 🙂 I wonder what next week will bring, I hope Rob doesn’t keep us waiting too long for the fruits of his labour on the new BA voucher availability, and I guess somebody already received a great email making them 225k Red points richer 🙂 Until next week…

  • J says:

    Hey all,

Can anyone recommend a non-London, great value IHG redemption that is below the 40k points?

I have 2x free night vouchers and would like to treat the mother to a staycation somewhere outside of London, but I’m struggling to search easily on the app.

I assume the Indigos are the best value redemptions but struggling for ideas.

    Thanks

    • Aston100 says:

      Voco St Davids, Cardiff?

      • J says:

Looks awesome but 50k points so not eligible for free night 🙁

      • Ryan says:

Redeemed my Credit Card free night for my parents, they said it was the best hotel they’ve ever stayed in – nice upgrade and free cocktail too. Not much help if the free night is the ambassador though…

    • Chrisasaurus says:

CP Chester priced at 39k a night for random weekend in Oct, rooms odd but it’s a decent hotel and lovely city

    • Harry T says:

Indigos are the best but dynamic pricing is not your friend.

    • Anna says:

The Durham Indigo was 25k points between Xmas & New Year, it’s a beautiful hotel, nearer Kimpton standards than some other Indigos.

      • Anna says:

Also the Kimpton Clocktower is often under 40k. I loved both my stays though options vary here!

  • CH says:

This may or may not have been flagged up already. Etihad Guest is giving 1500 free miles by filling out the form at the bottom of their 15 year birthday page:
    https://www.etihad.com/en/guest/campaigns/birthday-celebration
    It ends tomorrow though.

    • Blair says:

What’s a good transfer use for 1500 Etihad Guest miles? If none I’m not sure I can be bothered handing over my data to another airline. Travel firms continue to be high value targets for cyber attacks.

      • CH says:

To be honest, I see little to no use for an orphan 1500 miles. My comment was aimed at existing collectors, but didn’t write as much, so probably an oversight. You have a fair point about the cyber attacks though.

  • J says:

Quick Q, what referral bonus do I get for referring someone to a BA premium card from my Amex platinum?

    Thanks!
