We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi Rob, about to apply for gold personal amex, would this be a good time to do this? missed the recent bonvoy waiting for electoral register to roll over. Thanks

    • David D says:

Make sure you get a referral as the bonus points are up to 27k at the moment for Gold if you meet the signup requirements. Happy to refer if needed.

    • Rob says:

Nothing happening to Gold as far as I know.

      • Youllnever says:

I’m surprised that the metal card revamp is taking so long.

        • Harrier25 says:

I don’t want a metal Gold card because it will just be an excuse to increase the annual fee!

          • Youllnever says:

As long as the new benefits that come along with the metal card make the numbers work, then I’m fine with an AF increase.

      • swifty says:

        ok thanks Rob

    • Rui N. says:

Have a ref for 32k for Gold if interested. I’m @mikex163 in twitter and flyertalk.

      • Harrier25 says:

        Don’t we all 🙄

        • Rui N. says:

Just above there’s someone with 27k… in one of my cards it was only 22k a couple of weeks ago (haven’t checked since). So, no, we don’t all have that offer.

  • Sam says:

What is generally regarded as the best use of Tesco Clubcard vouchers? I have £5 worth that expire in Nov of this year and need to make use of them. From what I understand 3x the value of them is the max limit value. Thanks!

    • Tom says:

Its a fiver. Use it for whatever you find the best value. I would probably use it for a £15 voucher at Pizza Express. Larger amounts i funnel to Hotels.com or VS.

      • Nick says:

I used my Aug ones for 3 months Disney+ to see if it’s any good. Not recommended so far, but in the absence of anything better… Bit miffed T have stopped extending them automatically if I’m honest, especially when they also never got round to extending the Railcard offer to include the Network one which they said they would!

  • Harry Holden says:

Just undertaken a search on Seat Spy.

Coincidentally or not, a week or so after HfP ran an article singing the praises of Seat Spy and dissing Reward Flight finder, I find that the free version of Seat Spy only offers Economy seat results. Want anything more, sign up for the free trial leaving the onus on you to cancel it within 14 days.

This is sold as unavoidable due to “others” screen scraping.

Another fine service that I have paid for in the past has now gone all commercial and spoilt itself. Yes, £30 per year is not earth shattering, but that works on both sides of the argument.

    • Babyg says:

I’m confused, you used to pay for seatspy, now you don’t, and youre complaining that the free services isn’t as good as the paid service? Not really sure what your argument is?

    • Rob says:

How does it work both ways if you’re not paying them anything?!

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

      £30 x 1 is not a lot.
£30 x (lots of subscribers) on the other hand can be very substantial….

that’s how it works both way 🙂

  • CH says:

I think this might be a noob question so apologies.
Amex Morri’s 10% offer – how do you know if it’s triggered, after saving to card? Is it just no initial indication until the statement is generated?
There was a mention a few days(/weeks?) ago about sometimes it takes ages to get any email confirmation, if at all, but that might have been for one of those one off offers rather than this “every time” offer. Thanks.

    • Reney says:

once you saved it, do the spend, on amex, it usually pays out after a few days. no need to wait till statement date.

email confirmation has been spotty recently, in face i have not gotten one in a while, used to get them every time.

    • Peter K says:

      Basically
      1. The payment hits the card.
      2. The payment is pending until it clears fully.
      3. The points for the spend hit the account shortly after.
      4. The offer discount is applied sometimes at this point, sometimes a few days later.

    • CH says:

Thank you very much, Reney and Peter K

The last time I used an offer was aaages ago and got an email instantly, though gathered from recent comments that these have, as you say, been more scanty.

    • CH says:

Didn’t see your comment earlier*, but thanks, good to know 🙂

*must be because of that pesky “c” word (!)

  • Asim says:

The 10% Moris offer on Amex / previously its only been on the “first purchase” after the offer is saved.

This time is it the same, or is it every time there’s a purchase. The headline on the offers page says “every time” but detailed terms more ambiguous.

    • CH says:

The headline says “Spend £30 or more, get 10% back every time”. The blurb when clicked then says “…get a 10% statement credit on an eligible transaction of £30+ in participating store(s) and online … by 15/9/21. Valid every time for the first 10000 to save”

      • Asim says:

Didn’t help answer my question. Headline says “every time”.
The detail says “an eligible transaction” (implying one); not “every eligible transaction”

And the second part “valid every time for the first 10k to save”. You only save once so is it only valid once?

I plan to spend a few k so would prefer to do it in multiple transactions so as not to arise suspicion, but don’t want to risk that I don’t get the CB!

        • CH says:

I think basically I’m in the same position as you. My question immediately above yours is tangentially related.

Comparing the terms on (some of) the other offers currently available, they tend to specify valid “once” or valid “every time”.

But I think we both need some of the experienced crew on here to answer our questions…

          • Dave says:

Had 10% back multiple times on this offer

          • CH says:

            Thanks.
Returning to my original question, how do you know you’re getting the 10% back? There no extra line on the transactions list/no email about it?

          • Reney says:

when it pays out it will be a line in your transaction

  • Bearing up says:

Just had a conversation with a friend who was due to fly to US for Ryder Cup. Following chat with contact who is USPGA tour referee he’s decided to come with us to play in Europe as advised it’ll be a no-no for Brits to attend.
Just kind of confirms what we’ve all been thinking anyway.

    • Liam says:

You don’t need to talk to a PGA Tour referee to know that travelling direct from the UK to the US later this month is 99.9% likely to still be banned for all but a handful of non-Americans!

  • BJ says:

Discovered two new MS routes this week 🙂

    • JSemity says:

go on.. be so kind 🙂 at least some hints

    • Harry T says:

      Set us hints as riddles?

      • BJ says:

Riddles just frustrate people, only your namesake was ever good at figuring them out.

    • peter says:

is one of them Zoo related? 🙂

    • VerdantBacon says:

There’s a long standing route I found and have been using for over a year that I’ve never seen mentioned or hinted here. The only way it stays open is by not sharing! Soon as you hint at what it is, a few will get it, then will share it with a slow backslide in the complexity of riddles and codewords until absolutely everyone gets it.

While I’d love to know your two new routes, it’s just not worth sharing!

      • Anna says:

I have two or three … waiting for a HFP party so people can buy me drinks lol.

        • BJ says:

In that cas you’d likely need your stomach pumped in under 3 minutes Anna 🙂

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

My rule of thumb is that anything I can’t do while sitting at home in comfort is becoming dangerously like actual work and is likely not sufficient return for time spent anyway; so any methods that involve leaving the house won’t be diluted by me 🤣

        • BJ says:

Agreed, I’ve never put bendy things in an ATM, too much hassle when you could just sit at home feeding the bairn.

      • BJ says:

So you’ve never benefited sufficiently from HfP + comnents to feel compelled to share your year old secret?

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

Fancy emailing them to me? Hahaha
