The HfP chat thread – Thursday 2nd September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone else finding Revolut top ups not posting to Solihull? Usually post very quickly – I’ve now got some going back several days not even showing in pending. Money has long gone from Revolut.!!

  • Jumble Tales says:

Expertise needed. My partner has emigrated from HK to UK (British national overseas) What is the best way to get her into the points/credit card system? She has been HSBC premier / several Amexes etc. in HK for years but had to resign her job to emigrate but not yet fixed up in UK . HSBC refused credit card as did Amex (despite their global transfer stuff) citing that she would need UK employment history.

    • KBuffett says:

Difficult to apply for a credit card when you are not credit worthy (i.e. zero income).

    • John says:

Too late now but she should have opened a UK HSBC premier at the international section of HSBC HQ in Central (HK) back in 2019, they may even have given her a UK credit card (they were doing that in 2017, and even offered UK mortgages to HK residents if they had the cash invested with HSBC).

Amex wouldn’t have done it before the BN(O) visa was available, and you still need to have an income. If she has substantial assets she could appeal the decision

She’s probably going to have to just do it the hard way now, at least she can get on the electoral roll which helps

    • Liam says:

Can you add her as an authorised user on one or two of your cards? I assume that would reflect positively, to some extent, on her credit score.

      • Youllnever says:

I don’t think being an authorised user affects her credit report at all since she isn’t the one responsible for the bill? It might be taken into account internally with Amex when she applies again though.

  • Tom says:

Can someone remind me where to get the £20 (I think) day 2 test for NHS staff? Thanks!

  • Booker1989 says:

I have created a PLF gov.uk account saving basic details ready for when I need to complete it 2 days before my return from Greece. I tried to log into it tonight but my password is not recognised no will it let me reset it. Anyone else experiencing same?

    • Bigmaggot says:

In Greece too and doing forms.

I couldn’t login either, BUT, it turns out the email address is case sensitive after I reset my password!!

      • Booker1989 says:

Ah! Thank you. Only this govt could want a 14 digit password and make email address case sensitive !

        • Bigmaggot says:

I know it’s ridiculous! It was driving me nuts as I knew my password was correct 🤦‍♂️

How long is the first avios to nectar conversion taking nowadays? Also, if I use them to make a large-ish purchase from an eBay seller, will I still be covered by Section 75 credit card protection if I pay a small amount on my credit card?

    • Peter K says:

If over £100 then even a small amount directly (eg not via PayPal) by credit card is fine for cover.

    • AJA says:

Interesting question. Can’t answer the Avios to Nectar time but the second question I think paying a small amount on credit card and balance in NP won’t work for s75 protection as eBay is an intermediary. I think it has to be direct with the retailer. Also would have to be over £100 in value to be covered by s75.

      • Youllnever says:

+1 of my understanding regarding the Ebay intermediary issue since they’re a marketplace like Amazon. I think it’s a bit of a grey area as I can see both sides of the argument.

  • AnotherUser says:

    Thanks!
