We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Email received today from Cunard! There’s a lot to be said for honesty!

Dear Mrs xxxxxx, breakfasts are widely known as the most important meal of the day, and on Cunard they never fail to disappoint.

  • Gary says:

@Sukes @TGLoyalty thanks for advice re SA national entering U.K. via 3rd country. Friend was delighted and may go Irish route.

    • Pete M says:

I really struggle to understand why people would pay £2k+ to be locked up in a hotel when there are so many other options to get into the country. The UK is now the only European country making vaccinated people undergo managed quarantine of this sort and I can’t but think it is entirely for PR reasons…

      • Chrisasaurus says:

Or it’s for minimum contract commitment reasons…

      • TGLoyalty says:

It was always a PR stunt because the tory core voter (xenophobic bordering on racist 60+) felt this island nation needs to be cut off to stop Covid from entering the country, when we had 60k cases a day on our shores and airports using about 10% capacity.

        • Pete M says:

I am sad to disappoint, TGLoyalty, but I have plenty of young, liberal people around me who think the same way and still regard Australia and NZ as the ultimate examples to follow, despite the blatant impossibility of emulating them here… (And current issues, of course)

          • TGLoyalty says:

We have 0 in common with Aus and NZ when it comes to the vast amount of international movements that happen for day to day items

Anyway my point is for it to carry on beyond August is a farce.

          • BJ says:

I bet they’re mostly arty, busines, paranoid, or poorly educated types though. A multivariate analysis of pandemic attitudes would make interesting reading 🙂

        • GJB says:

That’s a very inflammatory comment you have made, I don’t think it was called for.

          • TGLoyalty says:

The calls come as NHS figures have revealed that people who holiday in England have a higher chance of testing positive than those going to overseas destinations. Data showed that the test positivity rate for England stood at 1.36 per cent for the three weeks to August 11, compared with 1.3 per cent for the 500,000 holidaymakers who jetted to amber countries and were tested on their return.

          • Mike says:

BJ – good point, well made.

        • Mike says:

Not a PR stunt – we don’t need people coming it to this country from Red list countries and coming in contact with the public and potentially infecting them. Quarantine is a common sense public health protection measure.

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Aren’t vaccinated people exempt from hotel quarantine?

    • Sukes says:

Gary Thks for update & good luck for your friend’s onward travels

  • Bigmaggot says:

Sorry on holiday and haven’t checked comments earlier so not sure if it’s been posted!

Expert medical is currently taking orders for day 2 pcr tests!

    • Anna says:

My test that I ordered 3 weeks ago still hasn’t arrived!

    • Eoc says:

Mine arrived today. 12 days after order made.Well I haven’t actually opened their DPD envelope yet 👌

  • Fab212 says:

Is it still the case that Amex UK will not incentivise with MR points to move from the Gold credit card to the Platinum charge card?

    • Youllnever says:

You can’t change from a credit card to a charge card. Regarding gold charge to plat, apprently there is a lifetime-limited upgrade bonus.

    • Rob says:

They can’t ‘move’ you because they are legally two different types of product – charge vs credit, with credit having far stricter legal oversight. It was a doddle when both were charge cards.

  • Hak says:

Expert Medical update: day 2 Pcr tests actually turned up. Shocked but least it now keeps the wife happy.

  • Matt C says:

Interesting twist in regards to rebooking a cancelled August First flight. Trying to rebook within a year of the departure date for July 22 but the YouFirst agent has stated that because I had adjusted the flight in April for a different return Houston – LHR that I am now tied to only being able to select flights up to the change in April 22. i had been told on a previous call that I could check change to July 22. They offered the normal FTV or refund but I left things as they are and will try again.

    • Sam G says:

See page 5 , I wrote a reply about ticketing rules there might be worth a read. But assuming this wasn’t a rebooking of an even earlier ticket (so you booked ~Sept 20 or later) then this doesn’t sound right to me, try again before you do anything else I’d say!

  • MJ says:

Just had a call with BA due to +100k Avios missing from a cancelled booking back in April. Cash was refunded but the avios left a gaping hole so I made sure to take note. The flight was shown as cancelled on my profile for the longest time and I thought once BA process the cancellation fully in their system the avios would be returned. To my not so very huge surprise, couple of weeks ago the flight completely disappeared but still no sign of avios. i finally called the contact centre today and while they profusely apologized they said the booking had been ‘purged’ and was gone from the system. If it hadnt been for such a large amount of points it’d probably go unnoticed and the avios gone forever!

  • Thomas Shelby says:

Stupidly applied for a gold credit card which arrived today, the bonus should be 32k points (was referred) but the tracker is only showing 20k bonus, guess that’s normal?

    • David D says:

Yes that’s normal as it will only show the normal bonus on the tracker. Once earned, the referral points post at the same time but as a separate points transaction.
