We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Looking for advice on how to avoid losing ££££ on return from a red list country (Mexico). One option is to fly to the US and spend 10 days there prior to coming back to the UK, am I correct? Any other easily accessible or cheaper countries (flying from Mexico City airport) anyone can advise?

  • Eleanor says:

AMEX Platinum Travel insurance: I have a BA Prem Plus card and an Amex Plat. Have received mixed responses from Amex/AXA regarding coverage. I would like to book flights obviously with BA Amex and hotel probably via Monzo for conversion rate. Would my Amex plat cover me for medical cover if I needed in while away (in Rome) if I didn’t use the Plat card to book any of the trip? Any help much appreciated!

    • KS says:

Medical emergency cover applies irrespective of the card used to book travel.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Get Halifax clarity card if your aim is to minimise fx fees.
Monzo or Starling won’t give you the same consumer protection as a credit card.

      • Andrew H says:

Or a Virgin Atlantic card – no FX fees for Euros, Sweden or Romania

        • Babyg says:

hmm i had no idea about Virgin Atlantic card have no FX fees, is that no fees and a great rate too?

          • Rob says:

Mastercard rate. A card using interbank (Monzo?) will be cheaper BUT the value of the Virgin Points makes VA clearly better.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Only for in person transactions not online.

      • Harrier25 says:

I really have no idea why people on here keep recommending Halifax Clarity over Curve for FX spending when the points earning opportunities with the Halifax card are zero?

        • Harrier25 says:

I accept the extra protection s75 with the Clarity card, but for flight bookings charge back should offer enough protection.

          • BuildBackBetter says:

You don’t need Curve for flights, unless you book one ways. All flights departing uk are priced in gbp so you can pay using Amex.

        • Youllnever says:

It is technically better over the weekends (or using the VS card in Europe).

        • BuildBackBetter says:

Not everyone wants points. For purchases abroad, sometimes consumer protection is better than a small number of points.

          • TGLoyalty says:

How many purchases do you make abroad that need protection? My overseas spend is 99% food drinks shopping all of which is consumed near enough straight away or something I’ve physically bought Instore and take away with me in a satisfactory condition.

          • Rob says:

That giant Toblerone you bought at duty free might be mouldy ….

          • Rob says:

            ?

We brought back 4 lemons (illegal, I know) and a pair of sandals from two weeks in Spain. Not much risk of chargeback there 🙂

As you would be illegally bringing back high value items into the UK – assuming you don’t pay the duty at the airport on landing – I wouldn’t be pushing my luck making a claim if goods were damaged.

          • Harrier25 says:

For day to day spend? Surely not! People come to this site because they’re interested in earning points. With all the better FX free and very profitable options now out there, I haven’t entertained the thought of using Halifax Clarity for many years.

          • Tony1 says:

TBH the lemons in Waitrose are very similar to the lemons I have grown on our Spanish villa. Same with oranges …. YMMY

        • Andrew H says:

Free Curve has a limit I guess (£500), and a charge at weekends (0.5%)

Again – why not Virgin Atlantic… fee free in EEA.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Next time you’re abroad spend 10 EUR at the weekend on curve and on virgin and tell me if you see a 0.5% difference when they both post.

          • Rob says:

Curve uses the ‘pure’ interbank FX rate whilst Virgin uses the Mastercard rate which is worse. There is a difference of close to 0.5% here so the number will be similar.

This is one of the issues that Currensea has advertising their card. Whilst they charge 0.5%, it is 0.5% on top of interbank which means it is virtually the same as using a 0% FX credit which uses the Visa / MC rate. This is too complex to explain to customers however.

          • Harrier25 says:

Out of interest, which conversion rate do Starling Bank use?

          • TGLoyalty says:

@Rob exactly its literally not worth worrying about.

          • Harrier25 says:

If you are Legacy Black, like me, then there are no FX spend limits making Legacy Black worth its weight in gold….or plastic.

        • BJ says:

Me either, there has always been better kess fussy options than clarity, even going back to days of few options.

  • Stephen says:

Hi all – where is the £200 dinner spend on Amex Plat that keeps getting mentioned? My fiancee just got a Plat a week or so ago and we are in London. A few offers have showed up on her card but no sign of this. Is it just a question of waiting?
    Thanks

    • SteveJ says:

Does she have an offer titled “Get 100% back every time, up to £200”?

My experience (others may vary) is that you get these on the day of launch, otherwise you don’t get it at all.

      • VerdantBacon says:

I didnt have the £175 offer appear earlier this year, but called up and they were able to add it right away.

        • KS says:

Same here. I took out the card after original £100 Waitrose offer went live and still got it when I asked on chat. It was a nice welcome gift in addition to SUB. 🙂

    • Sprout says:

I’m in the same position. I contacted Amex via chat this morning and they added it manually which then showed up immediately.

    • Tony1 says:

Not on my Bus Plat – but then I still have Betts Sweat so 100% unhappy 🙁

    • Damian says:

If you’re a new card holder it takes a few weeks usually and some spending on the card before offers appear.

      • Stephen says:

Thanks all. Just did chat through app and they manually added so all good. Another thanks to HFP readers otherwise wouldnt have known about it

        • FatherOfFour says:

Did they ask where you found out about the offer? I called about one missing the other day and they asked how I knew about it! Just said “..a friend told me!”

          • TGLoyalty says:

This is an offer for all therefore a friend telling you is ok

Targeted offers won’t be offered unless you’ve been specifically sent marketing for it ie web pop up, email etc be sure to take a screenshot

    • Can says:

Call/chat and ask, they can do it right away

  • KS says:

QQ: Has anyone been able to confirm if the spend £5k to earn 10k Avios offer includes spend on supplementary card?

    • Tom says:

      It will not.

    • WaynedP says:

I think this will be a tricky one to confirm in the absence of an official count-down indicator for this offer.

Unless reliably confirmed by Amex, I think you can only be certain if you commit, say £4990 to main card spend, then try to trigger the offer with a £10 supp card spend. Anything else is risky. Others will reach that point long before me.

I also wondered what would happen to any balance accrued on a card that had to be cancelled/replaced due to loss/fraud/damage. Obviously one would hope it would be straightforward to preserve any spend balance onto a replacement card.

      Nightmare otherwise 😱

      • JDB says:

My BAPP card was used fraudulently last week which triggered the 10k Avios. They told me that the offer would all be sorted out and would either just stick or get reset, but wouldn’t be lost.

In respect of supp card for this offer, the email I received said they were included:-

“Don’t miss your 10,000 Avios treat. Simply save the Offer to your British Airways American Express® Premium Plus Card and spend £5,000 by 30 November 2021. And don’t forget, these bonus Avios are on top of the usual Avios you already collect.
Supplementary Cardmembers on your Account can enjoy this great Offer too. They just need to visit their Online Account and save the Offer to Card.”

        • TGLoyalty says:

See that bit at the end is just some dodgy terms because the 10k offer never showed up for supps

It’s highly likely supp spend won’t count just like the recent double MR for £1k spend on gold.

          • WaynedP says:

Sadly I agree with TGLoyalty on both points here.

May have to risk confiscating all OH’s credit cards.

Problem with joining this game very late in 2019 is Covid has robbed me of the opportunity to demonstrate the real value to Mrs dP of restricting spend to specific cards at various times (sigh).

At the moment I think she just sees it as another excuse for me to play around with a spreadsheet with no real benefit to her (double sigh).

          • JDB says:

My BA supps got the offer per the email, all saved. One spend completed by fraudster, second close to completion, third underway.

          • WaynedP says:

Lucky you, JDB – I will recheck my OH’s BAPP Supp offers, but it wasn’t there before.

But nothing in the T&Cs you quoted dissuades me from the notion that the offer appearing on a Supp merely provides you with a second chance to earn 10k Avios for a second chunk of £5k spend. I wouldn’t presume that Main card and Supp card spending are simultaneously contributing to a single £5k countdown.

          • JDB says:

Yes, WaynedP, I think it is a second offer of 10k, which is better. What I copied and pasted was from the email I received from Amex and that’s all it says!

  • Paul says:

Just picked up that while Austria is allowing fully vaccinated travelers to enter the country the vaccine cannot have been received more than 240 days before.
I have trip booked for next half term and I make by just 4 days.

Others may wish to check their dates and eligibility though much can change in the intervening period

    • TGLoyalty says:

For clarity is that the 2nd jab?

    • Andrew H says:

      It’s 270 days

I’m Ok for December, but late Feb is dodgy

Also 180 days from infection; again doesn’t quite work for me for late Feb

(yes, double vaccination doesn’t stop you getting it – in fact it doesn’t seem to offer much protection at all – based on a sample of 2 – my partner and me, just means you won’t be as ill)

      • MIchael C says:

Yikes, we just make Innsbruck Xmas markets by 2 days!

        • meta says:

This is the current position. This EU wide policy with either change in 2-3 months or you’ll need a third jab to travel anywhere.

        • Andrew H says:

I assume it’s for entry date, not that it needs to cover your stay. Now because of Brexit (it just keeps on giving) they can ask for proof of departure date

      • BuildBackBetter says:

“You won’t be as ill “ – that’s the protection.
Many people wrongly assume vaccines stop spreading or getting infected.

        • TGLoyalty says:

And means all this preference for double vaxxed only to enter/travel or eat indoors etc is a bunch of BS.

          • Jeff Greene says:

            Reduced risk though….

The requirement for travel isn’t going to go away so people are just going to have to get over it.

          • Andrew says:

Yes and no. Less likely to transmit supposedly. And less likely to catch it in the first place. Supposedly. So double vaccinated is better than nothing. But should really be with a test as well.

          • TGLoyalty says:

            Less likely to transmit supposedly

You actually believe that? Latest study showed vaccinated symptomatic people had the same viral load as unvaccinated. So just as easy to transmit.

But yes less likely but this nonsense fear of unvaccinated people is BS

Ireland will phase out their “vaccine passport” requirement from 22 October.

          • Rob says:

You transmit for a shorter period though, because your viral load drops faster.

Worth noting that I have two event invitations to hand and the restriction, irrespective of vax status, is a negative lateral flow test.

        • Rob says:

I don’t think anyone seriously believes that any longer, but we have collectively agreed that as long as you don’t die we will carry on as before. Feel free to hide in a box for the next 100 years if you wish (probably realistic as Spanish Flu is still circulating in its muted form, 100 years on).

          • Jeff Greene says:

“ Latest study showed vaccinated symptomatic people had the same viral load as unvaccinated”

Fake news. It really didn’t. “Peak infectious levels” were the same for jabbed and non jabbed but that doesn’t mean what you’ve said.

    • GeorgeJ says:

Austria are the outlier on this at the moment and unless their neighbours follow their lead (unlikely) this policy will disappear pretty sharply when they realise the impact on their ski season.
Its also a question if anyone will look at the paperwork in the first place. I am in Austria at the moment and no one has looked at any of my paperwork so far, that includes at the border.

  • Andrew H says:

    270 days.

  • Nigel W says:

Has anyone else had issues with the Morrisons offer tracking on Airtime Rewards?

  • Jill (Kinkell) says:

OMG. Denver update ( for those interested…skip if not!) phone CS on YouFirst again. What a rigmarole. Due to downgrade of F-CW by BA, ( which I very reluctantly had to take as no F and only one flight a day , and stated I wanted it recorded that I was unhappy about this ) it’s apparently a BA re-issued ticket, which was done in Dec2020. So, In spite of the 8 July memo which states booking a year out from first flight, I’m told ( because of the ticket reissue by BA) it’s back to ticket validity. This means my outbound flight has to be before 9 Dec 21 and not 5 Sept 22. All I want is my trip to
the USA in Sept 2022. It’s not me who cancelled First class due to aircraft changes and neither did I cancel the Denver flight…all BA’s doing. I was on phone for 1 hr 20 mins . Am I still getting the run around? Previous poster stated get BA to put a cancel all legs and rebook when dates become in range. Fell on deaf ears. Totally being forced into a refund or FTV . Fast running out of time!

    • Anna says:

I know that sinking feeling of trying to reason with BA CS! I’m not relishing the prospect of calling to use my FTVs, even though that was the only way to extend our 241s.
I’m not the expert here on EU261, but if BA has cancelled the flight altogether could you not go to MCOL or CEDR to claim for a replacement as there’s plenty of time before September 22 so you wouldn’t have to pay up front? Apologies if this has been covered already!

    • Lady London says:

      Jill not clear.
Who chose date in dec 2020. BA or you. If they just downgraded you and left it on same date as you’d booked then it sounds unfair.

What are you trying to achieve now. A voluntary change or a change after a cancellation by them. Where did Sep 22 date come from

      • Lady London says:

PS if I didn’t know BA never bullies anyone I’d suspect the note on your PNR pretty much indicates you will be claiming 75% back for your downgrade and I’m sure seeing that, BA agents would never be encouraged nor takw the initiative to try to force you into a refund or a credit voucher (FTV) to avoid you claiming this after actually taking the flight. Especially as a 241 is involved which means same 75% downgrade compensation for both seats.

        • Anna says:

I was thinking you might be along soon to clarify, LL!
I thought I had read that BA first downgraded the cabin then cancelled the flight entirely but not certain.
New John Milton available and Jack Reacher out soon!

          • Lady London says:

            Cheers Anna.
I do recall seeing Jill post recently on this. But it was a really overloaded day for me. So I had to skip, that time.

But it does sound like a HUACA or three at 8am (if poss) is needed. Plus even though I know there’s still gonna be no First available on Denver, for the record I’d make a point of plaintively asking for it again (remember don’t accept any refund of cash or points not even partial – to be safe).

            Let’s see what Jill clarifies

    • Sam G says:

I believe by the technical rules set out by IATA for tickets this is actually correct – the ticket can be valid for 1 yr from booking (first flight, then another year to finish the trip) OR for disrupted tickets 1 year from the date of travel of the first flight (the latter is what BA are now offering after refusing for a good while!)

Of course none of this affects your EU 261 right to be rebooked at your convenience but you may have to take it to CEDR / MCOL for resolution. If the first sector on your ticket has been cancelled then you can safely leave it, they can always “rebuild” the ticket from the 125- ticket number if needs be

If you make changes to your travel plans then you are going to forgo your F-J compo IMO so I’d just put that aside for now, once rebooked you can get any cost difference back

Lastly I’m not clear if this is Avios or cash ticket. If it’s Avios then Denver is wide open for August, so it might actually be easier just to get the FTV when your outbound comes into range and rebook (calling back in to add the inbound later)

      • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

Thanks all for chipping in. My ticket is a 241 Avios redemption. Domestic INV-LHR in CE on 6 sept ( next week,) and originally F LHR -DEN on 7 Sept. BA informed me of downgrade to Club for the Denver leg on 9 Dec 2020. According to BA, the ticket was re-issued on that date, as I ‘accepted’ the downgrade under duress as no other BA flight in F available. Asked that my reluctance/ unhappiness etc be recorded on notes as the only way to get to Denver was on the BA flight! The Denver flight has now been cancelled by BA. My understanding was that the 8 July memo Allowed me to rebook my trip so long as my outbound was before 5 Sept 2022 ( up to a year from original flight date of 6 Sept 2021). BA CS are now saying that because of the ticket re-issue in Dec 2020 (F-CW) I now have to fly my outbound by 9 Dec 2021. All this is BA. changes , not me. Interestingly, if I go onto MMB and look at the options available for my booking, and click on ‘ change flight’ it brings up the calendar and has the dates for 21 august 2022. I’m Reluctant to click on it given all the conflicting garbage from BA and I end up in a bigger mess! I could just take the FTV and save myself all this bother, but….!!!

        • BJ says:

I’d recommend you cut loose of all this and take a FTV if there is an issue with the expiry of the 241. If not, then I would just refund the cash and avios. In either case, I am sure you will get to Denver when you want to go, and possibly even in First again.

          • Sam G says:

yes agree. the key fact being BA is not going to put you back in F before travel even via MCOL / CEDR IMO , so you’re not gaining anything with BA pushing this now that you can’t just get yourself via FTV / refund – depending on voucher situation

        • Sam G says:

Similar to another report from later in the chat then – if you originally booked in ~Oct 20 or later then I can’t see why this would be the case but there may be some system issue that prevents the call centre helping in a scenario where it has been re-ticketed. Potentially a HUACA / supervisor scenario to get it solved

As I say, you have the EU 261 right to getting this solved, but considering the availability situation I’d personally go down the FTV route and book a fresh CW ticket vs having to CEDR/MCOL and ultimately only getting the same result

Your EU 261 right for downgrade compo is a post-travel claim and if you rebook for different dates BA won’t consider you as having been downgraded, so I don’t think you have further recourse for that (other than a refund of the Avios difference)

If your INV flight is running then it’s better to try get that segment deleted (or FTV at least 1 hr before) otherwise you’re going to no-show on the ticket which causes an additional headache. Try a Twitter DM to delete it until you’re plan is confirmed, worked for me earlier this year.

          • Lady London says:

Sam G as the reroute to later date is due to BA’s cancellayion I would say provided it”s kept clear that downgrade is still involuntary and no refund full or part is accepted, Jill would keep rights to involuntary downgrade compensation after flying.

        • meta says:

I think you will need to go down legal route. I’d actually send a letter to BA’s legal department and engage with them clearly and simply stating timeline showing it’s all BA’s doing. Then see what they say. If they still hold this stance then send them another letter before action. You’ve dealt with CS enough already.

@Sam G Other airlines are able to override IATA rules by simply reticketing and are routinely doing it. It’s only BA that makes excuses they can’t.

          • Sam G says:

Yes – it’s a curious one as BA will now reticket in this scenario, what they’re saying doesn’t make sense, not unusual for BA though as we know! But my point is with Avios availability wide open for Denver a refund or FTV can be taken and a rebooking completed without the hassle

          • Jill ( Kinkell) says:

Again, thanks all for chipping in. Very much valued.. Currently sipping🍷on my sunny patio in the Highlands, mulling over my next step. It’s a point of principle! But…BA are wearing me down It’s a disgrace that CS give out such rubbish asI have had today ( I could go on about the. ‘Oh at 3.27 on Aug 27, BA have sent out another memo reverting to ticket validity.’ I I put my points across again and the CS rep says ‘Oh wait, I see that BA have sent an update memo to ignore that at 5.27’ Geez! Thanks all. I have several days to ponder.

          • Lady London says:

            Exactly Meta.
            Address it to Legal.
Don’t worry just make sure they know you won’t be on the outgoing flight till this is resolved then take your time.

SamG and NJ whilst I would normally agree with you, if Jill takes a refund or FTV she loses downgrade compo which is worth a *lot*. As all actions have been BA’s do far so she is forced to choose a later date I believe doing this she will retain the right to downgrade compo. None of this is her choice.

Reticketing is simple and BA can do it easily if it suits them.

Don’t give up Jill but I do like Meta’s idea to communicate with Legal now. Request a reply within 21 days.

        • Lady London says:

The fact that BA reissued it after forcing you to take downgrade is BA’s problem. Not your fault and not even aware of it.

It’s simple enough for BA to issue you a new ticket if they want to. This is not a barrier it’s just admin.

Have they actually cancelled your flight now? If so you are in the strongest position.

I’d (1) insist on the 8th July rebook up to 1 year rule being applied. Any reissuing or other rubbish BA had to do in between was not your fault and is purely BA’s own admin. You have made no voluntary changes to this booking so far and now they have cancelled. You can only do this trip at similar time of year so using the 8th July offering to rebook 1 year from outgoing – remind them they cancelled not you.

If they dare mention the reissue in Dec then remind them you are still unhappy about having been downgraded so any admin problems to do with that are not your problen they can just issue a new ticket if that’s what it takes.

If they refuse (give it at least 2 more huaca’s) (2) remind them that although under the 8th July rule BA gives you up to 1 year to fly from the original outgoing, in point of fact EU261 supersedes any BA rule and does not impose any time limit.

          (3) State whilst naturally you’d prefer BA to honour their standard offering of 1 year and having to do a new ticket is not your problem, the cash cost of replacement First Class tickets on Air Canada is £nn,nnn and a court claim of that cash cost under EU261 which overrides BA’s policies can surely be heard in time for BA to have to sponsor this cash cost for next September ( AC doesn’t have a deal with BA).

Btw if they cancelled your flight you don’t have to resolve this by the date of the outgoing flight. Just make sure if the cancelled flight is not the outgoing flight they know you’re not taking the outgoing.

I can’t help thinking BA is using time pressure because you might not know this, to scare you into a refund or FTV. Both these lose you the right to a 75% reimbursement *2 for the downgrade and I honestly think that’s what they’re trying to worry, push or scare you into to save that money. That’s why taking BJ’s solution is not the best

I think after a call or 2 you should be able to get the Sep22 date without going so far as (2) or (3). Once you do, at the end of the call circlw back to the fact you’re still unhappy about Club when you booked First and you are making the best of it. Just to keep it involuntary “Don’t let the BAggers get you”.

LL….You are a gem! Many thanks for the detailed advice. What bugs me is I was very clear to them on your point 1.
EU261 superceeding anything BA does cut no ice with the rep..
Never thought to price up a different airline
Will tell BA we’re not taking first flight which is the domestic leg to LHR before the now cancelled Denver flight.
Might have to set my alarm in time for an 8 am call.

I chose Air Canad guessong via YVR or poss YYZ a as BA is under no threat if you are forced to buy your own cash ticket and MCOL them if you choose any OneWorld, EI, or possibly LH Group flight as due to Transatlantic JV, OneWorld or rumoured LH deal all of those might cost BA 0-peanuts. Other airlines like Air Canada would cost them more. Of course if BA pushes you to MCOL ypu can state you’re fed up with BA and OneWorld hence chose AC or whoever. Delta might do too.

You don’t want to MCOL you don’t want to do new booking as keeping existing booking just choosing later date as their cancellation caused this should, I think, still preserve your downgrade compo provided you keep it clear not your choice.

I have exactly the same issue to another destination and I am dreading having to deal with it. I moved my flights to November as they cancelled my first flights. I am hoping that my November flights get cancelled as I would like to rebook for November 22 but I know BA won’t allow me to rebook a year from cancellation!!!

Commiserations. BA seem to be ignoring their responsibilities, policies, EU stuff, customer relations and just about everything else.
