The HfP chat thread – Wednesday 1st September

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

  • VerdantBacon says:

100% back on £200 spend on Plat has appeared as expected from all of yesterday’s comments and article, only on main card.

    • Jonathan says:

Queue the uproar as 90% of them (& 99% of the ones worth eating at) are in London…

      • Mike says:

Johnathan- I agree – nothing at all in Doncaster for example!

        • CF Frost says:

But the disappointed of Birmingham will find some relief when they learn that several Brummy choices have been filed away in Birmingham, USA.

          • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Looks like this is just on Plat personal cards as I have nothing on my business offers today… another reason to call up for a retention bonus methinks!

    • Andy says:

Ha, well when I phoned up to cancel
My Amex Plat card of 3 years yesterday they didn’t mention this deal at all! I said I wanted to keep it but was finding it difficult to justify to my wife. No offers were mentioned! Oh well, I guess aside from the £200 meal bonus I’m missing out on I am saving a couple of months annual fee

    • NSL says:

I even find the names intimidating. Any of these accepting of children? Not sure if my 10 year old will appreciate wild mushrooms and pastilla scented with Arabian spiced fennel.

      • Andrew says:

I’ve not heard of a restaurant turning away children? If you’re looking for “family dining” type of place – then The Ivy is a good option.

      • illuminatus says:

Except for The Ivy, you don’t want to bring children in other restaurants on the list – you will ruin the evening for them, yourself and other guests too

        • Rob says:

Wouldn’t go that far, but certainly avoid anywhere with Michelin stars. The fist-full amount of food served per course at Core, for example, would not go down well with my 10 year old (and indeed certain posters on here to be fair!).

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

I took my kids to the (now sadly closed) Michelin* Yorke Arms when aged 9 and 7 and they enjoyed it; the staff could not have been more lovely as were other diners and I’m confident we didn’t spoil anyone else’s lunch. Of course Yorkshire folk are a lot friendlier and less uptight than Londoners 😜😜😜

    • SteveJ says:

Free £200 not to be sniffed at, I initially got excited that it was every single time, with each transaction being up to £200, before realising it was £200 across as many locations as you like. Still very good.

      • CF Frost says:

If the existing Lucky Cat offer on my plat Amex stacks on top of this, then that’s me being PAID £20 to eat at the furrow-faced-one’s swanky Mayfair restaurant.

      • Simon says:

The way I read it is you get £200 every time? I don’t think it is very clear.

      • Paul says:

        OFFER DETAILS
Save to Card to get a 100% statement credit on a transaction made in participating restaurants by 31/12/2021. Valid every time up to £200. Terms, locations, payment restrictions and future communications about this offer will apply.

Hard to argue that this is not particularly clear. Valid every time up to £200 could be read as eat out nightly for £200 on us.

I am going for a Boozy lunch at the savoy grill!

        • Paul S says:

I thought there might be somewhere in Northern Ireland but no. I then thought of the Republic of Ireland. There’s nothing there either. I’m not sure if there are no worthy restaurants or it’s not one of the included countries!

This deal, which is meant to convince me to pay my membership fee, is remarkably London-centric. I wonder if I could get a takeaway in the mail?

I suppose I did get a nice discount on this year’s fee but an offer I could use would me good…

  • Roger says:

Dell business gold there is 10% off offer will it work with £50 statement credit?

Terms state only valid on Dell SBH Small Business Hub online.

    • Rob says:

      Historically yes.

    • Andrew says:

£100/£750, expiring 31st January at Dell has turned up my BA Classic this morning.

If you work for a major firm, you’re bound to have employee discounts ranging from 10% on laptops to 20% on accessories. PAW fans should also get a 6% return.

Just looking at one for my elderly mother at the moment. £849 Laptop, less 10% discount is £764. £100 back is £664. 6% back is £618. Then they’re offering £150 back on recycled laptops less than 7 years old – so net cost is £468. Not bad.

  • BJ says:

A big day at amex but business as usual for Sweaty Betty.

  • FCP says:

Anybody use Curve for deposits to Interactive Investor? what underlying card do you use?
After the Miles&More card closed, i can only get MBNA Horizon to work.
    Any points cards options?

    • Char Char says:

This question is now being asked daily, not that many cards, perhaps barclaycard.

    • Toppcat says:

Hong Kong WE MC works for me with Curve metal. No fees/interest if paid off the same day. Reputed to be one of the providers you want to be careful with, however.

    • Travel Strong says:

ii and horizon stopped working for me sometime between march and july. Appears to be the horizon end that declines it now. No working routes across my cards currently.

  • Lewis Beecham says:

Canada sure is taking their time confirming the Sept 7 date…

    • Yorkie Aid says:

They are a bit busy with an unnecessary general election

      • James says:

Agree on the unnecessary election. You would think there would be a confirmation before the 7th but has anyone said there will be?

  • Mike says:

Anyone done a trip to Germany lately? From what I can tell it’s just be vaccinated and their version of the PLF, no quarantine etc? Were immigration happy with just the NHS App rather than paper version?

    • Andy says:

Yes I just had a week in Germany. Had to show passenger locator form and vaccine certificates (I printed both but online would have worked fine)

No quarantine needed. Get the Luca app for checking into bars and restaurants

      • Mike says:

Cheers Andy, I hadn’t seen anything about the Luca app. I’ve installed it, in case it’s needed.

  • Patrycja says:

@rob do you expect another Marriott spend offer on BAPP imminently? Couldn’t use the one just expired as it would trigger my companion voucher

  • Andrew says:

Harrods offer on BAPP – 10% back when spending over £300, up to £50 back.
