Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 31st August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Etihad emailed – 1500 miles for registering email address. easy 1500 miles.

Anyone had any experience of cancelling a Sainsbury car insurance policy?
Bought a new car a few days ago and insured it with them. Already got another car insured with them on a separate policy, but sold that today, so want to cancel the old policy.
Absolutely zero way of doing so online, and every phone number seems to take me through to a claims line regardless of what their website and my documents say.

It’s a bit of a chore IIRC. I had to do something similar last year when we replaced our runaround. Looking at the old paperwork we still have the customer services number is 0345 2661604

I’m looking to cancel an NHS PCR test, is this possible or just not turn up? I don’t need it as I’ve completed it via another company.

Is it possible to book Mr&Mrs Smith hotels anywhere with added benefits? Have tried Emyr and FHR and they don’t have them

    • BJ says:

Try contacting the hotels directly, sometimes it does pay off.

    • TGLoyalty says:

MAMS is a travel advisor so they are the extra benefits

Alternatively go directly to the hotel itself. They usually have better rates.

I imagine that some are in Small Luxury Hotels or similar, but it will be property by property – remember, it is only a marketing group and not a chain per se.

Looks like BA have cancelled the BA1434 at 07:55 to Edinburgh in their winter schedule. Normally I’d be extremely unhappy but at this time a positive result. Having given us a free switch from exINV to exEDI to BKK and indirectly 17k Bonvoy points the other week they have now just handed us a free switch to whenever 🙂 Would probably happen anyway as I now doubt we will get to Thailand in December but let’s see. Reaccommodation is on the BA1442 at 09:05 for info of any others affected.

For the new Preferred Hotels 400/100 offer on Amex : the T&Cs say valid on hotel checkout for stays only, but how could they distinguish that from an in-person gift voucher sale at hotel reception?

    • KBuffett says:

Gift Vouchers at hotels are usually sold through a separate merchant.
The way to do it is to open a folio in your name and pay on account. That way they are holding you money against your booking effectively making it prepaid. However, if your booking is fully cancellable etc, then you can still change your booking and move the credit to when you do actually stay.

Got more details about the Wentworth hospitality today (people kept asking about this). It’s at the Championship Pavilion. I don’t know if it’s the same space as the official hospitality or if it’s segmented in some way. Looking forward to it.
