Get £200 of free dining credit if you are an American Express Platinum cardholder

There are strong rumours tonight that American Express is about to launch a £200 dining credit for The Platinum Card holders.

You will receive 100% back when you spend at participating restaurants, up to a cumulative £200. Centurion cardholders will receive a £400 credit.

The offer will run from tomorrow until the end of 2021.

If you’re in London, you’re laughing. The list of restaurants is simply outstanding, from 3-star Michelin restaurants through to more casual groups such as The Ivy.

The Ivy Harrogate is pictured above – there are a fair number of non-London restaurants included although there do seem to be big geographic gaps.

There are over 1,000 participating restaurants across 15 countries. Here is a random London selection for the letter ‘B’:

What’s interesting about all the comments here is that people are more excited by a £200 posh meal than £200 in cash. It’s an interesting insight into human psychology.

You can be certain that people will feel more goodwill towards Amex after their meal than if they’d simply had a £200 fee refund.

I am guessing it isn’t costing Amex £200 either, unlike a fee credit.

For anyone wanted pricing guidance at The Ivy, we had lunch at City Garden last month and it was £234 with service (2 adults, 3 kids – my daughter brought her cousin – 3 courses) with, I think, just 1 glass of wine each for the adults. A family of 4 should hit £200 nicely with a full bottle of wine.

    Amex did do a big fee credit for Business Platinum cardholders last year. HfP reader response was moot! Even my response was moot and I’ve got one.

  I tend to value things I’ve been given for free more than I’ve paid for – so I will value this meal/meals more than if I’d paid for them. Same as if someone gives me a gift card I tend to really think about what I’m going to buy whereas normally I throw away my money on all sorts of rubbish.

I just called Amex. They said they couldn’t guarantee I would get the credit as the offer is targeted and marketing haven’t disclosed anything to the customer services team.

Anyone else heard any different? I was considering reapplying for plat as I recently closed my US platinum card and I’m starting to make travel plans again. Having this offer will definitely be the tipping point.
