The HfP chat thread – Saturday 28th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I’m thinking of upgrading to the BAPP card, will I lose the offers currently saved on the free BA card if I do this?

    • BJ says:

No. They might dissappear for a while but usually reappear within 48h. Take a screenshot of saved offers before upgrade. If any issues three days after upgrade just call amex, don’t use chat.

  • Tiger says:

I am planning to pay my monthly mortgage payments to Halifax manually and cancel the direct debit. Is there an established process to go about it or can I just cancel the direct debit and start paying manually?

    • Dallas says:

Initially I cancelled DD at the halifax end than started making manual payments.

      • Anna says:

Did you discuss it with them first? I asked FD about this and they weren’t having any of it!

    • Anna says:

Each bank has its own rules, I wouldn’t advise cancelling a direct debit on a mortgage though as it might look as though you intend to default.

    • Tiger says:

Thanks both. I have been trying to get in touch with Halifax but the wait times to speak to someone are pretty long. I haven’t been able to speak to someone but I will try again on Monday early morning. But I thought it might be useful to tap the knowledge HfPers have in this matter to make sure I am not chasing something impossible.

      • Stephen says:

Would be very interested to hear if this is possible with Halifax – keep us in the loop if possible please

        • Nick says:

Is it technically possible????? Yes. Possible for a short period, until you’re written to, explaining you need to re set up the DD. Should you do it? Absolutely not. Mortgage conditions stipulate mortgage payment needs to be collected via DD (just google Halifax mortgage conditions and you’ll see the latest version, you’ll also have been sent them when you received your mortgage offer letter. Dates vary, the most recent are 2019 you may well be on 2011) More than that though. What’s more important, a few extra ‘points’, or your home. I honestly say this in the most sincere way and with a genuine knowledge. Each to their own. I wouldn’t test it.

          • S says:

Just had a look on the Halifax website –

            https://www.halifax.co.uk/mortgages/existing-customers/your-monthly-payment.html

You can make a mortgage payment using your debit card by calling us on 0345 850 3705. We’re available Monday to Friday 8am-8pm and Saturday 9am-4pm. Otherwise, come and see us in branch.

We can only take debit card payments from customers named on the mortgage. We don’t accept credit cards or debit Mastercards (cards beginning with a 5).

            ———

Do all Curve debit Mastercards start with 5?

    • Yorkie Aid says:

Can you set up a direct debit from Revolut? Then you fulfil the requirements to pay by DD but can earn points with the topups.

    • Peter K says:

Don’t forget Monday is a bank holiday so you may not get the best info from your bank by calling then.
A mortgage advisor there will give the best info.

  • Chris says:

Re: the Virgin credit card upgrade/2for1 voucher.
I think I’ve received two of these now on the free card. Can I hold more than one voucher at once? And can I use 2 vouchers?

  • Justin says:

Coming back from France in mid September.
As I don’t live very close to a randox drop off point
1)can I take my day two test as soon as I land and drop it off at Heathrow Terminal 5?
    2) If so, where is the best drop off point at Heathrow?

  • KBuffett says:

It may be of interest to some, Peloton have recently reduced their prices and the AmEx 15% back offer is also still running.

    • JDB says:

Peloton did well with the initial lockdowns, but struggling now to sell what look like somewhat overpriced/hyped products even with these offers. Shares were $160 in Jan, now just over $100 in a good market; speaks volumes.

    • Lou says:

They also knocked £400 off their original bike. Probably made too many work nobody to sell them too!

    • Tariq says:

Amex offer is 15% off £1500 and basic bike is £1350. So best that can be achieved using the Amex offer seems to be the £1595 package for £1355.75 – so basically a load of stuff included for the price of the basic bike. Then £39/month for the online services subscription – shame you can’t add a one year prepayment with the bike…

  • Munch says:

Checked into the Doubletree in Harrogate. Diamond currently, nice corner room but shouldn’t we have received a drinks voucher. Not sure on the current policy, seems to be hit and miss depending on hotel.

    • ianM says:

      Drinks voucher isnt a benefit

      • JDB says:

And that’s even if you get one.

      • BJ says:

And they are rare in my experience anyway. Much more likely a few drinks and snacks left in the room. Often the value of those have substantially exceeded the value of a bar voucher so no complaints from me. Personally I’ve always felt a bit embarrassed handing over vouchers for stuff.

        • John says:

Never received any gifts in the room at UK Hiltons.

          • BJ says:

Chester Resort & Spa hame me a well-stocked fridge and a tray of goodies, DT Westminster a bottle of sparkling wine, DT Aberdeen City Centre a fruit platter and coffee and cake delivered to the room are three that spring to mind:) extremely sad to see DT Aberdeen go out of business during the pandemic, one of my favourites, really punched above its weight.

    • Grant says:

I got two drinks vouchers at DT Cadbury House last night and I only have gold.

  • Graeme says:

Just filled up at Morrisom’s, was told by the staff member that her duty manager has said not to accept gift cards for petrol anymore. She reluctantly accepted it thankfully. Anyome similar experiences? Was trying to find the T&C’s online for gift cards but can’t see them? Believe you can use them to buy other gift cards too?

    • JSemity says:

yes, can be used to purchase other gift cards. I have a bank of Morrison’s gift cards to delay my decision what to spend on.

    • Phil H says:

Filled up today and paid with gift card at my local store in Lancashire, no issues at all.

      • Joe says:

I’ve filled up at at least 5 different Morrisons stores in the last month. No issue at any of them.

    • BJ says:

T&C do not exclude petrol AFAIK and I never had any problems using them to purchase either petrol or branded giftcards.

Ok, who’s the guilty party who cleared out almost all the amazon vouchers at Morrisons Ferry Road in past 48h … @EwanG??? 🙂

      • EwanG says:

No, not guilty @BJ. Hardly buy from Amazon, have been very restrained this time around (not showing on my Airtime and Shops Away accounts) and I prefer the Granton store 😃

        • BJ says:

Ok, wonder if it’s another reader 🙂 I’ve taken £500 for petrol and £200 amazon so far. With Xmas not far off I can rebuild amazon balance.

      • Graeme says:

This was in Aberdeen. May have been misinformed, as I said, she did take it under duress.

Plenty Amazon up he BJ if you fancy a day out on Sunday!

    • Pablo says:

Can I use my Morrisons Gift Card at UK Morrisons petrol stations?
      Yes.

      • Graeme says:

Thanks Pablo. Saved the site and screenshoy in case it is raised again.

  • aviosnewbie says:

Has anyone booked seats in F & J for a party of 4? Can they be booked on the same ticket? I am planning to book 4 seats to JFK and am thinking of booking 2 seats in F and 2 in J. In practice, can we swap seats half-way through the flight? Will it seem very odd and will the crew mind?

    • ChrisC says:

No they can’t be on the same booking. You;d need to book these separatly.

And definitly a no on swapping seats mid flight. The crew will stop you doing it.

      • kitten says:

May well annoy other passengers as well

      • Mouse says:

Is that rule part of the conditions of carriage? Always surprised how heated online discussions about it become.
