We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

I recall reading on the comments within the last week or so about a money off offer or an additional points bonus for shopping at World Duty Free, or something similar. Does anyone have the details?

    • Rob says:

Preordering duty free at an airport with WDF. 10% off. Heathrow link is in our article, will need to Google for others.

      • Matty says:

        Cheers 👍🏻

        • Cats are best says:

You can get at least 5% with the Red byDufry app at WDF LHR, it also works at a lot of other locations worldwide.

You can still get Heathrow rewards points on top, just scan both at the checkout.

  • Kai says:

I might need some help. I am obsessed with the current Morrison offer and every time the offer appears on any of my credit cards, I feel tempted to use the offer. I have already spent a small fortune buying different gift cards from Morrison, but with the latest Amex offer I am tempted again.

I should know when to stop but since this offer has saved me a decent sum in the past, I feel tempted to use each and every offer I get. Can someone talk me out of it please. I am addicted to this offer.

P.S.: I should clarify that I am not buying gift cards blindly. I have a use for them and will eventually consume them sooner or later.

    • Rob says:

Given current bank rates it seems a profitable and safe investment unless you lose them!

    • Youllnever says:

Maybe we’ll need a Gift Card Anonymous soon

      • BuildBackBetter says:

We’ll need a HfP anonymous soon.
Woke up at 5 to read the comments on the 100MR for £1 offer. Disappointed but still made sure I save the offer on every card, only to find it wasn’t loaded on 7/9 cards.

    • Andrew says:

As long as you have a use for them!

Buyer beware though. I bought £6,000 of Co-op vouchers through a salary scheme to use towards paying for a planned new car. £500 a month was the maximum over the course of the year and cost £450 a month. I’d checked that the Motorworld dealership owned by MidCounties Co-op would accept the Co-op vouchers before I started.

All fine, other than it took them an age to count out 600 x £10 Gift Vouchers.

Within a few days of me completing the purchase, Motorworld was sold by Coop to Ridgeway. I came very close to being stuck with £6,000 of Coop vouchers to spend on Groceries.

    • KBuffett says:

It’s a very good offer and I cannot understand how it’s truly being funded.

However, just be aware of the risks, such as:
      1) Morrison’s changing the rules on their Gift Cards being allowed to be used for Gift Card purchase or on fuel. This type of thing is more likely once the new owners take over.
      2) Same with any other retails you may opt for
      3) I feel safest with Amazon personally. A potential risk here is Amazon closing your account, which has been known to happen if there are excess lost packages in your area, excess returns etc. You lose your gift card balance if this happens.

      • FlyingChris says:

Worth noting if you are successful in making various promotions stack (e.g. Airtime, Shops Away, Virgin Money CB etc) – you can offload Amazon gift cards online at places like Cardyard for a 10% fee and still end up in profit, while helping towards any spend bonuses you might have.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Fixed marketing and sales incentives budgets.

Not everyone is buying tonnes of 3rd party gift cards

  • Anuj says:

If I’m fully vaccinated and travelling to Germany am I correct that I just need to submit the proof of vaccination online on the German website and then the only testing is returning to the U.K. for which I need a pre departure test and a day two test ? Thanks

    • ChrisC says:

      Yes that’s my understanding.

      • Anuj says:

Thanks, the way the German website is laid out, spreading important information across multiple sites is a little confusing

        • Kwisstan says:

Can confirm that is correct. It is what I did a few weeks ago

        • Pete M says:

I’d say compared to most countries, the German Covid travel website is actually pretty clear and the PLF very straightforward… Always worth cross-referencing with the Germany travel section on gov.uk too.

  • Anna says:

I got 25k earlier this year which IHG Saïd was a goodwill gesture but then didn’t get the points for hitting Spire. I contacted them and said the goodwill gesture was meaningless as I had requalified anyway and they eventually agreed and handed over the other 25k! It may depend on how many times you can be bothered emailing them.

  • Alan Franklin says:

    Quick question on B.A. refunds.
I’d booked a flight to Montreal and upgraded the return leg to CW with 24,000 avios and £95.
BA cancelled the flight and rebooked me onto the next day, which didn’t work for me, so I cancelled last Saturday. They’ve refunded the cash portion of the booking (original fare plus cash part of the avios upgrade) and the money hit my bank today, but the 24,000 avios haven’t yet been recredited to my account, yet.

How long should this usually take?

  • Tim says:

Just has this offer on my Amex Plat:
Spend £1 collect 100MR points once.

I’m just interested if anyone has seen this before it’s quite an odd offer in my opinion.

  • Laura says:

I booked flights to Dubai with the 2p Avios deal over the weekend.
The same flights are now now £60 cheaper (each!) in the sale.

Is there anything to stop me from cancelling my original flights, getting the voucher and immediately rebooking? It won’t add me to some kind of BA black-list will it? haha

    • Memesweeper says:

Nope, other than a small risk the price then goes up while you wait for your voucher

      • Laura says:

        Brilliant, thank you!

Just saved £120 so that will hopefully that will get us a short-haul return somewhere next year too.

I had an autofill failure and managed to booked my mum’s ticket in the wrong name, so I had to cancel and rebook twice. oops!

E vouchers came through super quickly each time though so all good

    • Andrew says:

This is the joy of all the 2p eVouchers we have – they are like hotel points which you can use to book speculative trips and/or monitor prices and as soon as they go down, cancel and rebook like dynamic pricing of the hotel programmes.

      • Laura says:

        It’s brilliant!

For £537.94 and 8,000 Avios I now have two return flights to Dubai and £120 in Evouchers.

  • NC says:

What’s the latest wisdom re paying HMRC these days? Does COT via Bendy still work?
