Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

data point, just returned from Italy, quick and easy to get in, not so easy to get home! Uploaded docs to Ryanair which gives a green boarding pass and only had a quick question at Stansted prior to boarding. Coming home from Bari, they were checking every line of every document and at least 50% of passengers were sent for new tests, quick and easy in the airport. Seems most passengers had their test results in Italian which isn’t allowed. We got through with Prenetics unsupervised tests no problem. So glad as the test to release in Italy was brutal, had a headache etc for two days afterwards. Then the same happened at the boarding gate for passengers with hbo, with an hour plus queue to board, so leave plenty of time at the airport prior to flying to the UK.

At least you got rid of 300,000 avios….or did you?

It seemed for those with greater nerve that I, there were a couple of more advanced techniques that didn’t require this…I saw them but didn’t have the brass neck. I felt best let BA get what they needed as it was a very decent offer so went with the 101 solution rather than the 201. Still very happy aa I got rid of my few avios I couldn’t use for the flights I wanted.

    • Lady London says:

      * above for Globetrotter

      • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

Yes indeed LL – 300k avios were involved 🙂
Great deal, particularly as over the next couple of years we’re desperate to do a bit more travelling, given what has transpired over the last couple!

        • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

What was the 201 solution as opposed to the 101? If it was buying the avios in the BA sale at c.1p to the redeem at 2p then I am guilty as charged!

  • KBuffett says:

Getting worried about not being about to utilise by BA 241’s effectively. I have three now, and another that will trigger once I take advantage of the BAPP bonus points offers.
My main concern one that expires Dec 2021 and another Jan 2022. I realise converting to FTV is the logical option, does it matter which flight I book and cancel I order to maximise return?

I’m looking for inspiration as to how to get excellent bang for buck. We have no commitments so can generally travel anywhere, anytime.

Can FTV be used with BA holidays?

    • SteveJ says:

Regarding which to book and cancel, just go for a UK domestic to tie up minimal avios. It really doesn’t matter. LHR-MAN/EDI/INV are all popular options.

Just remember you can’t change who you are travelling with, and will need to call to use the FTV..

    • mike says:

Rob / Rhys – do we have any idea if/when existing BA241s validity will be extended again or when BA will make that decision.

    Morrison’s Shops Away is targeted?

    • Reney says:

reading the last few days thread it sounds like it, I got 6pt/£1 some people reported nothing.

  • Tim says:

BA launching a new subsidiary at LGW for Summer 22. Internal emails from BA and BALPA confirmed. No mention as to service quality or if it’s single class cabins, but confirmed it’ll belong to BA rather than IAG.

    • Nick says:

Indeed. Will be interesting to see if it’s a properly differentiated airline (Vueling-equivalent) or just a cheaper version of the same (as with Iberia Express). The latter would have very little customer impact; the former would be a step change. On the edge of my seat 😂

      • Sam G says:

I can’t see it being single class, if this summer has proved anything for BA it must be that people are willing to pay for CE on their summer hols – lots of 12-14 row cabins going out full. I wonder if we would see a premium product without the empty middle seat?

    • Richie says:

Should we be making avios bookings before any changes?

  • marcw says:

Apparently BA mainline to quit LGW short haul flights, replacing it by a “new” IAG airline. IAG is making an announcement very soon.

  • tony says:

I’ve just had a rather random e-mail from the DTI or whatever they are called this week inviting me to join a mission to a trade fair in the US in November. Is a bit odd as it’s not relevant to my sector but I just wonder if this is perhaps a signal that things may soon be about to ease in terms of travel across the pond?

    • mark2 says:

Do they ask you to send money?

      • tony says:

There’s a price list on it. The registration link goes to a gov.uk website and the e-mail comes from a gov.uk address, so seems legit.

        • WaynedP says:

Ah, that’s bound to benefit one of BJ’s ex GFs or the sibling of a current cabinet minister.

          All completely above board then.

    • John says:

I guess they expect you to get a national interest waiver

      • tony says:

Well, it’s to Florida and my wife is also the company secretary. I’m sure given the current state of our government I would be venerated for exploiting such an opportunity to get some winter sun (probably with a side of COVID)

  • Roger says:

10% offer for Morrisons from Virgin Black credit card via email.

Do I need to do anything in my app to activate?

Of course the card is linked in the shops away as well and may or may not get additional 8 flying club points per £ spend.

    • Reney says:

no action require for the virgin card CB. worth checking start date thou. I got caught out before, the offer had been on the app for ages turned out start date was later.

      • Roger says:

        Thanks.
The start date is from today so should not be an issue. Couldn’t see detailed terms and conditions anywhere though.
