The HfP chat thread – Thursday 26th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Don’t forget to stack it with the Virgin In-Store offer if you collect Virgin Points

There’s a certain dirty pleasure in collecting 7 Virgin pts per £1 by using your BA Amex card.

  • Gavin says:

    10% on ARCC

  • Andrew says:

Is the latest traffic light list expected today?

  • Dave says:

My TV license is up for renewal…is there any way I can pay using Amex?

    • Dayle says:

Even better idea… by not paying it at all

      • JSemity says:

        this.

      • Jonathan says:

And risk debt recovery people coming after you ?

        • Beardless Hipster says:

Draw the curtains and don’t open the door to unannounced visitors.

      • Dave says:

I want to pay it! Just would like to use my Amex if possible

      • Michael C says:

Not paying for a TV licence was given as one of the reasons for the revocation of my OH’s UK leave to remain visa!!

        • Anthony says:

          WTF!? Really?

          • Jonathan says:

            It’s a criminal offence currently.

          • John says:

More like not paying and getting caught. But you won’t get caught unless you make it really easy for them to catch you.

        • KP says:

          Lol… really?!! Come on !!

        • meta says:

@Michael C gosh, is his visa sorted now? If not, I hope it is soon.

        • kitten says:

I believe technically it would be a criminal offence. Unless he had no tv of course

          • Number9 says:

When you cancel your tv license just tick the I do not watch live tv or bbs I player box they leave you alone for 2 years. I don’t watch any live tv, I stream everything. I haven’t even got my TVs connected to Ariels. Obviously if you just love the bbc dire programme output this is not an option for you.

          • John says:

The criminal offence is to *watch live TV without a licence*, not to have a TV without a licence

    • KBuffett says:

      Co-op / Paypoint

  • Jonathan says:

    Hi all,

My Virgin Atlantic premium card is due for renewal in or around within a month. I’m not keeping the card for another year, what will happen to any Virgin points earned between my after my 11th statement and when I cancel before the next fee kicks in ?

Does that spending not earn any rewards, or does it ?

I’ve already earned the voucher, so I’m not talking about spending £10K on the card within 12 months.

Anyone who’s cancelled one of their cards, please share your experiences !

    • Degsy says:

I think you have to cycle ie a statement be created in order for any earned points to post.
Be very careful on timings though – feedback on here shows that Virgin can apply subsequent annual fees early and not usually refund them.

  • Andrew says:

    Virgin Atlantic Money Back.

“Earn 10% at Holiday Inn. Customers won’t earn Rewards on Holiday Inn Gift Card purchases. Starts 26th September, Ends 8th September.”

Rather slack looking terms and conditions, so I guess it works worldwide – handy on a FX Commission free card. It shouldn’t work with points purchases though as they go through a third party. Do any IHG hotels sell IHG Gift Cards at Check In?

Don’t make the mistake I once did of paying for a Breakfast voucher at check-in and settle the full bill at checkout… £0.80 back triggered instead of £15

  • Peter K says:

    Thank you!

  • Andrew says:

    Nectar Rewards.

There was a bit of a debate a few weeks back about whether Nectar Rewards would stack with the card based offers from the banks.

An £11.99 purchase in a Lakeland Plastics store successfully triggered £0.84 (7%) from an MBNA (online only) offer and the 240 Nectar Points (20pts per £1) from the Nectar Connect offer.

    • G says:

How long did it take for Nectar connect to track? I have a papa johns transaction that still hasn’t tracked after 4 weeks so not sure if that ones gone through or not.

      • Andrew says:

Purchased Sunday 15th. Posted to MBNA account on the 16th, registered on the Nectar Connect site on 24th, posted to my Nectar Account yesterday (25th).

Did you buy direct from the Papa Johns store? Wonder if they are using an off-franchise merchant.

        • G says:

This was an online order. Looks like it’s not tracked then if yours was that quick. Did another order at the weekend and that also not tracked yet.

      • Chrism20 says:

I had a Papa John’s from Saturday night come through this morning on Nectar Connect
