Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Hi all. Just want to say thank you to those who recommended me getting an upgrade at the airport for my BA holiday to Antigua. Just did it at the airport today and it cost £898 for two from economy to CW one way. So much cheaper than it would have been on the phone.

    • Jonathan says:

      That’s a good price so we’ll done!

    • WaynedP says:

      Win-win, so glad

Hope it also boosted your BA Amex countdown towards bonus Avios in this week’s offer on the card.

      Enjoy your holiday !

    • Anna says:

That’s excellent, I remember being quoted more than that 10 years ago for a similar length flight! Have a great time.

    • Sam G says:

Very good ! – that sounds more like the usual WT+ to CW price

    • BuildBackBetter says:

But no lounge access and extra miles?

      • Jonathan says:

Should get both with a BA AUP (airport upgrade) unlike AA & many other airlines.

  • Charlie says:

    Thanks

  • Chelseafi says:

I’m looking at BA holidays for May/June flights Gatwick to Thessaloniki, I’m trying to find best dates for flight times that suits, am I wasting time, do you think Gatwick flights will be switching to Heathrow anyway?

    • ChrisC says:

Too soon to say for next summer. They haven’t finished dealign with the winter timetable changes yet.

  • ChrisA says:

I logged into my Amex today to check the expiry date on the Boots offer – and it had gone. I haven’t bought anything in Boots & it doesn’t appear in the “Savings” list. Do Amex offers run out before the expiry (I thought it was September) if too many people use them?

    • Greenpen says:

Is it limited to a certain number of people to accept? Most of the offers say ‘first 30,000’ or similar.

      • Andrew says:

But that’s to save, not to use. So if you’ve saved it, it should stay until expiry date.

    • Jonathan says:

There’s been a few issues with saved offers disappearing recently. They’ve all reappeared after a few days & Amex CS can confirm they are still on your account.

    • Graeme says:

There’s been reports of saved offers not showing on accounts. They should still be there however. I had BP offer disappear and was on chat about something else and asked. Amex can still see iy, just an IT issue.

    • KBuffett says:

Assuming you had initially saved the offer, don’t worry too much. I’ve occasionally noticed that offers go missing from the saved list, and then reappear. Perhaps try logging into the full AmEx website from a computer to see if it’s listed there.

I’ve also started to take screenshots once I’ve saved offers, this also shows the last few digits of the card number the offer was saved too. I’m often forgetting which card has which offer, which card I’ve already used the offer on, and the expiry dates. So I’ve recently started properly tracking everything!

      • ChrisA says:

Thanks for the info – I contacted them on Chat from the app (it was quite easy and quick) and they confirmed the 10% Boots offer is on my account. It still doesn’t show up in my offers! IT Gremlins! 🙂

        • Rich says:

Does anyone know if A: Boots sell GCs and B: If this offer works on them? And whats the max I coul dbuy in one go! Not shopped in Boots in many years! Thx

          • Rob says:

Boots sell lots of gift cards, even in modestly sized shops.

          • Eoc says:

Got some yesterday. max of 5 cards allowed in one purchase. No JL but took M&S , Waterstones and Pizza Express

          • Rich says:

They do, varies a bit by store though I think. I picked up £500 JL vouchers last week and the offer worked fine. No questions asked at the till either.

  • Ukgeorge says:

Qured LFD test to return question. if you order a test do you have to return on the flight and date date specified when you order the test or can you return on any flight and just book monitored test at a later date?

    • Damian says:

There is nothing about the flight number on the certificate they produce. You can always email them at support@qured.com. They responded quickly yo me with an amendment to the booking.

    • Cats are best says:

As above, you can use the test any time. The certificate only has your ID info and the test date/time, nothing about the flight or travel date.

Even once you make a booking, you can still go back in and change or cancel it (links are in the booking confirmation email).

Long term, the kits do have an expiry date, but it’s likely to be 1-2 years ahead.

  • Andy says:

Anyone having problems with Ernie today? I just get a “processing” wheel of doom every time I try and make a purchase

  • Nicky says:

My BAPP card is due to reset in March 2022 for 2-4-1 earning. I have just received my 2-4-1 and will be paying for 2 holidays in February. Is it worth cancelling my current card and getting a new one (obviously depending on what happens in September) or would I have to wait 6 months to get another BAPP card?

  • Andy says:

10% on my Plat card, shame it’s Morrison’s and not a place where Plat cardholders actually shop…

    • JSemity says:

buy gift cards for M&S / Waitrose / JL / etc.. unfortunately it does mean having to visit a Morrisons though (my local is a right dump)!
