Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

With Melia gold should I do Check-in at the hotel or online on my phone for the best chance of an upgrade? I’ve found Melia staff to be very difficult in regards to giving you your status benefits so was considering doing it online.

    • Yorkieflyer says:

Supposedly one of the offers you can click on as Gold is an upgrade, worth trying

      • Anuj says:

I was offered use of my birthday upgrade voucher which I declined, will ask at reception for a normal gold upgrade. It’s not the end of the world as the Melia I’m going to doesn’t have much to upgrade me to anyway

  • Yorkieflyer says:

Expert Medicals playing up again, be handy if we have a shout out when it’s up?

  • Fazzy Bear says:

Does enough know if Etihad reward schemes offer chance to see Man City matches in the way that Emirates does with Arsenal via Skywards?

  • Alan says:

The Turks must be pretty unhappy about being left on the red list. Just yesterday their London embassy was briefing they would be moved to the Amber list.

We have a villa in Turkey they we haven’t been able visit in two years, happily it has been fully booked out this season, full of Germans.

Bizarrely, we could get to visit both Turkey and the US this year if we went for 11 days in Turkey and then onto the US, as the US is accepting visitors from Turkey.

    • TGLoyalty says:

15 days in Turkey before USA then 11 days in USA before heading back here

All political nonsense at this stage.

    • Blenz101 says:

Not as deep pockets as the rest of the ME Hubs? I mean that EK advert was shot in record time of the Amber announcement.

      • TGLoyalty says:

More likely it was ready to go whenever it went amber 🙂

        • Blenz101 says:

Can’t put that many drones and helicopters up without people noticing.

You are travelled enough to know about wasta?

Anyway. UK has lost millions from the ME in London alone, maybe for years to come. But at least the minister didn’t have to explain pictures from Five Palm anymore to the Daily Mail of a few hundred Brits with masks off breaking the local rules.

Although would have been unpopular to imprison or fine those same Brits.

Just call it a travel hub and ignore the fact that LHR also acts as one!

          • Will says:

I’m not entirely convinced that many people are presently using london airports as a hub. From where to where?

  • Joseph Schlesinger says:

Trying to book a avios flight from new york to london one way in my account they want 25k points? its ushally 13 and in my wifes account its 13! anyone had this problem?

    • Rob says:

Click through to ‘other payment options’ and it should show.

If you haven’t earned an Avios in the last 12 months you will see some differences – but only to taxes – as you don’t qualify for Reward Flight Saver.

  • Joseph Schlesinger says:

    Thanks Rob
I am comparing the top option
    my wifes account – 13000 Avios + £ 46.71
    my account – 25000 Avios + £ 43.20

  • Joseph Schlesinger says:

Is there at all such a thing one way jfk to lhr off peak should be 25k?

  • Joseph Schlesinger says:

Its strange premium economy is still 26k just 1k more.
Feels like a bug. Has anyone had something like that?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Maybe … There’s deffo something going on with the reply function on your browser anyway.

JFK is an RFS location so it could be to do with your eligibility for those fares (ie haven’t earned an Avios in last year)

Or it could be you’re not looking at exactly the same like for like fare options. Certainly feels odd your wife has 13k+£43 but you have 25k+£45. I would be booing via your wife’s account if it really is that price.

    • TGLoyalty says:

This is what I see for 1 way Eco JFK to LHR

      30000 Avios + £30.00
      24000 Avios + £ 90.00
      20000 Avios + £ 145.00
      15000 Avios + £ 170.00
      10000 Avios + £ 200.00
      7000 Avios + £ 240.00

      PE is

      40000 Avios + £ 203.63
      32000 Avios + £ 273.63
      28000 Avios + £ 303.63
      24000 Avios + £ 338.63
      20000 Avios + £ 363.63
      16000 Avios + £ 383.63

So your tax numbers make no sense to me unless you’ve missed out some digits.

      • TGLoyalty says:

        Mmm dodgy reply

First lot are eco. Second lot are PE.

      • Joseph Schlesinger says:

        Are you looking at return?
I use this rute alot its always 13k as standard off peak
