The HfP chat thread – Thursday 26th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

    No they don’t.

  • John says:

Revolut seems to be desperate, they’ve upped the referral bonus to £60 (but nothing for the referee?)

Was going to refer my wife but too lazy to do it when it was £25 then £40 then £50… now wondering how high it will go

    • LS says:

They could spend their money on customer service instead. Novel idea. So people are not left high and dry when their accounts are suspended.

      • Blenz101 says:

In fairness if you use the account as intended then I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody complain.

Doing KYC checks on those flagged for MS or suspicious transfers seems like a poor use of their marketing budget.

  • Andrew says:

Ah, have you spotted the 14% offer at Sweaty Betty?

They appear to be automatically applied.

  • DI says:

I do not think I have ever bought a gift card in store 😉

Gift cards seem to be a good way to hit spend targets, etc. How much in gift cards would be too much for a single store visit as a rule of thumb?

    TIA

    • John says:

      £250

Just go again a few hours later if you want more

    • Cabal of rabid baboons says:

      My default purchase is
      2 x 250 Morrison’s
      1 x 100 Amazon

      • Ryan says:

I’ve done £4k 1-4-All and £1k Morrisons in one go before

        • Char Char says:

1 4 all is the worst gift card I have ever seen, max spend £40 online and limited to £100 a time

          • Reney says:

I actual find them to be quite good and you can register them on Airtime. Boots on the other hand, can only be used in store! Lots of great deals online and can’t double dip with using a discounted gift card.

          • Ryan says:

It’s the best one if you read the T&Cs….

      • Magic Mike says:

Yep £600-800 per purchase at a manned (sorry personned) checkout might get a “stocking up for Christmas?” comment but that’s it. Buying a bit of actual shopping also helps.

    • David says:

How many “staff” do you have under you? I had no problems buying a £100 voucher for each of 17 of them, at least that’s what I told the checkout operator.

    • BJ says:

No rules, just depends on the store and the people working at the time. Sometimes one could be too many, other times you can drop over £1k without issues.

    • Char Char says:

2 x £250 vouchers takes about 1m at self checkout

    • Gavin says:

Had some suspicious questions when buying £500+ before, some places have made me feel like a criminal! But it depends on the place. I normally prefer to keep it below £250.

      • Andre says:

I was questioned once at Tesco when buying £500 worth of gift cards, but it seemed like the cashier was making sure I wasn’t exploited or scammed and indeed buying the cards for myself.

    • Alan says:

I have done £4k in a single visit to Morrisons £4k. A manager had to put them through but no questions about why I wanted so many.

I did wonder what would happen if I told them it was to get 10% off my Waitrose shop.

      • Dave says:

What gift cards available in Morrisons are redeemable at Waitrose, out of interest?

        • Reney says:

i assumed the john lewis ones??? never brought one myself

        • TGLoyalty says:

          JL

I did £1500 last night at the self checkout. £750 Amazon £750 M’s which I can swap for JL and M&S at my leisure.

  • Rim says:

Just trying to set up my airtime rewards account. Referral code would be great 🙂

  • BJ says:

No, not like LBG or amex, no need to activate.

  • Sina says:

Thailand turned Red and exploded my hopes for travel to Phuket in October! WTF!? 🤬

    • Yorkieflyer says:

Schnapps has tweeted but no details and Gov.uk not updated

      • Sam G says:

        Montenegro and Thailand red
Canada Azores Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Lithuania and Liechtenstein green

        According to the Telegraph

Seemingly no movement on Amber either way.

    • Yorkieflyer says:

We have December Thailand flights booked and weren’t optimistic. October????

    • BJ says:

Have to be kidding, they’re raving mad 🙁 Thailand has a similar population to the UK and even at it’s worst it has been comparable to the UK at it best.

      • Yorkieflyer says:

They’ve partially vaccinated 30% adults and just agreed delivery of 50m doses of AZ for this year b/f from 2022 so should be improving soon.
The problem is with Shnapps and co, once on the Red list it seems almost impossible to get off it, why is Turkey 🦃 is still Red?

        • Yorkieflyer says:

Talking about Thailand in the first instance obs.

        • BJ says:

In Phuket I am sure the vaccinations even much higher than that. I suspect most adults there are already fully vaccinated.

      • Blenz101 says:

As well as being ahead of the U.K. they also have world class health care infrastructure in major cities. Attract a generally young demographic. Are by definition an outdoors location for almost every activity.

And for those on this site staying in luxury resort hotels I’ve no idea how the risk is “red” compared to the domestic spread in the U.K. in packed festivals, stadiums, bars and arenas. Only the office seems to be a place of potential transmission in the U.K.

And as for “unknown variants” perfectly easy to wash yourself of your Thai stamp cheaply in a neighbouring county in that part of the world.

Insane and I hope the public soon realise the system is just that. Specifically as it relates only to incarcerating low risk British Citizens at their own expense on return to this county when the risks just don’t justify any such action.

        • Sina says:

My only hope is that Turkey would turn Amber, then I will go to Phuket for 10 days and then go to Istanbul for 11 days and then get back to London!?

          • Blenz101 says:

You will have plenty of options around the ME if Turkey doesn’t. Even then just ignore the whole farce and come in via DUB into to CTA where no such nonsense exists and head to the U.K. as a domestic passenger.

  • Lee says:

Just bought £800 Amazon GC using Morrisons off. It’s the first time been asked why buying so many GC even checking out with self check out
