We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Morning all. Was trying to order day 2 test from expert-medicals as they are they cheapest at 28£, but no luck as the test never gets added to the shopping cart. What would be the next cheapest provider to get the code for the PLF (don’t care if I don’t get the kit)? Thanks in advance!

    • Anna says:

      See earlier discussion!

    • A says:

      £20: https://0044covidtest.com/products/day-2-oc

My PLF came through from them immediately – just book a random date in advance if none showing available. If you want printed proof, edit the email text and forward to yourself (I did this when I used them for my 2&8 and no-one checked)

      • Beardless Hipster says:

But for 2&8 you need a negative day 8 result in order to be able to leave quarantine.

        • A says:

I had my PCR test back home in NY less than 12 hours before my flight, took 4 self test ones during the 10 day period when I arrived, and I am out in the sticks for the entire duration of my visit – more chance of spreading mad cow disease out here than covid.

Other experiences may vary, but I – like many others – just wanted the cheapest possible method of getting the PLF number to be able to travel, and didn’t want to scammed out of any more cash than is neccessary.

        • TGLoyalty says:

actually you need a negative day 5 for TTR or negative day 8 and only if you’re one of the c20% of unvaccinated adults (all u18’s are exempt from amber)

      • Alex M says:

        Thanks a lot!

    Morning all,

Wife wants us to go somewhere hot at the end of next month, thinking Mykonos. Any hotel recommendations/area advice?

    Thanks a lot!!

    • DZOO says:

Really depends what you want – biggest decision is somewhere walkable (very likely up a some form of hill) from town or not – basically there are zero taxis so moving across the island esp. in the evenings is difficult unless you have your own means of transport

    • Richie says:

Best hotels in town to avoid need for a taxi are located near the Rochari, Belvedere.

    • Eoc says:

If you don’t mind a drive to anywhere, I cant recommend the Hilton Curio at Rethymno on Crete highly enough. Just back. Top quality in every way and a steady 30degrees unbroken blue sky above

  • Iain says:

Can anyone tell me how I can find out of my flight will have the new Business class seat and cabin?

I’m flying to BGI in October (flight number BA0255) for my first experience of Club World.
When I look at the seat map on manage my booking it looks like it is the new layout with 4 seats all forward facing, but Seat Guru shows the old layout complete with rear facing seats.

I know this is a bit of a noob question…but I’m starting to get rather excited at the prospect!

    • Harry T says:

The problem is, equipment swaps happen all the time (probably more frequently during the pandemic), so there’s no guarantee you will receive the seat map/metal you are seeing now. Not trying to be a buzzkill – I think it’s just a good idea to manage expectations.

    • ChrisC says:

Don’t look at seat guru as it’s notoriously unreliable.

The map in MMB is the current scheduled plane type to operate a route.

If it is 4 across then it will be club suites.

  • DI says:

Anyone has any experience organising a small company retreat?

Our situation: we are a small company, about 8-10 people would probably go on a retreat. We would like to go somewhere warm in the EU (Portugal? Croatia? Spain?), in 2022.
We are thinking about going for about 5 nights – a couple of days working remotely and a couple of days of social events.

I know it’s a lot of detail, my question is: can anyone recommend a company who could help us organise this?

    Thanks!

If anyone is after a rather pleasant weekend away – just back from Copenhagen and it was very much like the old days. No masks anywhere bar the airport, no testing or quarantine for the double-vaccinated coming from the UK, everything open including clubs. They happily hosted World Pride, the gay games and an Ironman in one weekend with minimal fuss. BA flights both way completely full and – shock horror – they are paying for the non-Schengen lounge at CPH (although we went to the Carlsberg one)!

    • Degsy says:

Even without any of the above, Copenhagen is great for a long weekend (albeit quite expensive when you get there).

    • TJ says:

Good to know. I’ll be there next week. Any recommendations on places to eat?

      • Peter K says:

Sticks and Sushi was nice of you’re not looking for high end.

        • Rob says:

Sticks & Sushi is excellent, works well with kids too.

          • DesignforHomes says:

Hard to beat the “Paper Market”. About a hectare of market stalls in a disused paper mill with views back to Nyhavn (new bridge means you don’t even need to pay to cross harbour on ferry) and a sense you’ll struggle to spend £15/head, even though this is one of the most expensive cities in Europe for dining. Several stalls are stunningly good. I think this is the best cheap meal in Scandinavia https://www.facebook.com/papiroen

Do BA holiday bookings (specifically fly + car) earn standard avios on the flight element?

  • Thomas Shelby says:

Want to draw on the expertise of H4P audience here about applying for an amex credit card.

Brother wants to apply for gold amex and just started their graduate job this month c. £38k salary, never had a credit card despite me urging him to get a student one/or a credit building one during university

Household income for us would be over £120k (just us living here, parents are abroad), would it be wise to just apply and see how it goes? or are amex keen on applicant having some credit history?

    • Andrew says:

Your household credit history doesn’t matter. People are assessed on their own credit worthiness.

He was a touch foolish choosing not to have Credit Card your credit history starts at 18. His Current Account will have been reported monthly though, as will his mobile contract if he has one.

Might as well go for it.

      • Thomas Shelby says:

To add but probably doesn’t make a difference, he’s been a supplementary card holder on several of my cards, going back few years now.

        • Pete M says:

Have you checked his credit history / score with Credit Karma, ClearScore and/or MSE? Would be a good indicator of what Amex will see and his chances.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

“He was a touch foolish choosing not to have Credit Card your credit history starts at 18.”

Rather depends on temperament and discipline; not always strong point in youth. Many 18yo’s are very wise not to get themselves a credit card at that stage; the effect on their credit score would not be positive…

    • BuildBackBetter says:

More important would be getting added to the public electoral register, utility bills, current account in his name (or joint) etc. Try using credit report agencies to find out if he has a credit profile, like Totally Money.
Amex doesn’t use these credit reports for scoring, but it gives you an idea if there is a credit history.
