We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone know how long it takes to transfer avios to nectar? Site says 10 days, is that accurate

  • VickyTM says:

I just phoned Virgin to change a flight they have cancelled. I wanted to leave it as cancelled until I have decided when I want to fly, but they told me that I have to have re-booked prior to the existing outbound date, (which is in about 10 days). I’ve read on here that that’s incorrect with BA, but does the same apply to Virgin? It’s to the States, so it’s very hard to guess!!
    Thanks

    • Travel Strong says:

      Virgins own rules: https://help.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/flight-disruptions/your-cancellation-options.html

I’ve got 2 virgin bookings in august that were cancelled, and the original outbound date has passed. I haven’t done anything about them and they have just moved to “VVD” bookings in the app with a date sometime in 2022.

      Who told you o

      • Travel Strong says:

*otherwise? If you are contacting them, maybe just leave it and call when you actually want to book. If they are reaching out to you – push hard stating their own rules above.

        • VickyTM says:

The CS guy said it’s because I have automatically been re-booked onto an earlier flight, so if I don’t turn up, I’ll go down as a no show. Am currently sitting on hold to them again…

          • ChrisC says:

Just because they have auto rebooked you makes no difference – unless you have accepted the rebook (selecting seats would imply that for example).

          • VickyTM says:

@Chris, No I haven’t selected seats or anything. So If I do nothing, the flights will just stay as they are till I call to re-book? Thanks

          • David says:

Ok if they have cancelled your flights you are entitled to a refund but if you take them as a future travel voucher – they will offer you upgrade vouchers as well .

Hello, when flying eastwards to the likes of SIN; HKG; BKK etc
    Choice between Lufty and Swiss.
Who has the better business class and premium economy out of those 2?

Secondly, am I right in thinking that the premium economy experience on those airlines provides nothing substantially better than economy? just additional legroom and luggage? I think I read you get the same food and check-in desks.
Please let me know if I’ve missed any other tangible benefits.
On some of the routes and dates, I can see premium economy is only 50% more than economy, which is attracting my attention.

Finally, do Lufty J/F companion fare sales ever cover UK school summer holiday dates? or are these always blacked out?

    Thanks.

    • Tim says:

Many fares mix and match Swiss and Lufty so you could try both. If business (and presuming you don’t have Star Gold) the lounges at Zurich better Frankfurt and Munich in my view. Also, if you are flying from / to London, the inbound from Zurich to London City is a very good option. So, I’d suggest outbound Lufty via Munich if possible, and then inbound on Swiss via Zurich. I can’t comment on premium economy. Pre-Covid, business similar on both. Economy better on Swiss. Swiss probably has the edge overall.

    • John says:

I didn’t think LX had premium. LH’s premium is a waste of money, less legroom because the seats have hard dividers. Outside popular dates, almost guaranteed flat bed in economy when they flew the A380. I used to book premium so that I would at least earn some miles with A3, have the slightly better meal then move to the back to sleep

Don’t know if this is allowed, but I got a code that gets you £20 off at Pasta Evangelists which is pretty sweet, thought I would share.

The new Italian successor airline to Alitalia starts selling tickets tomorrow apparently. Anyone know where you can buy them?

Sky mews breaking news FO updated travel advice not to travel to Kabul !

    • JSemity says:

I’ve heard no PCR test is needed on arrival but you may be subject to mandatory detention!

    • DAJ says:

Specifically relates to Britons not attending Kabul airport due to heightened risk of terror attack.

    • Harrier25 says:

Yes I saw that too and thought, wow, how can the news reader keep a straight face when announcing that it’s breaking news?

      • AL says:

There’s probably a reasonably large British diaspora (citizens, nationals and passport holders) in Afghanistan for which the FCDO advice was actually written, given the heightened risk of a terrorist attack, but for which our news media decided to portray as news that would impact more than the hundreds or thousands in Afghanistan. Strange newsroom decision, I agree.

  • Alan says:

I thought we were due an update on the traffic light countries today, any idea why it has not appeared.

    • AL says:

It’s happened on both Wednesdays and Thursdays before. Shappo’s Twitter is usually where things come out first – or the papers round-up the night before. Haven’t spotted anything today; tomorrow might be it. Mind, the get out clause is that these dates are the earliest at which they’ll update…

      • Harrier25 says:

Apparently the latest announcement has been delayed due to the troubles in Afghanistan.
