We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Had a LGW flight ‘cancelled’ and moved to LHR.

It was paid with an evoucher previously generated from the 2p weekend promo.

BA.com gives me the option to request a full refund, rather than an evoucher – would this refund as cash?

    • Luke says:

You would get the Avios refunded in my experience. Better to take the evoucher imo

      • ChrisC says:

        Flight cancelled then cash refund.

This isn’t the same as a normal avios or part pay with avios booking but one step removed as voucher involved.

        • Luke says:

Ah yes, sorry I misread. A cash booking part paid with Avios would be refund in cash + Avios, but a cash booking paid by evoucher that is cancelled by the airline should be cash refund in full I believe.

Can anyone recommend Voco Oxford Thames for a short break? Any tips/recommendations? It looks nice in the publicity including the pool, but the price is quite low so makes me wonder…
Spire Elite but I suspect that won’t mean anything much… Also have free CC nights but as they can’t be used on premium rooms it seems a waste for the price…

    • Michael C says:

If the Voco Oxford Spires is the same price, it’s totally walkable along the river to the centre of town, and is pleasant enough (albeit anodine) and also has small cute pool.

      • DaveL says:

Thanks! Spires actually seems a bit cheaper, though I’d be choosing between a smaller room and a (much pricier) suite. Would you recommend Spires over the Thames then?

        • Michael C says:

For location, if you’re intending to see the city, definitely!
Have a drink in The White House down the road, now run by Tap Social.

      • Jek says:

The pool was closed when we were there. The location is great with easy access to the city. There is a great Portuguese cafe for breakfast nearby.

We walked south along the river and saw the Voco Oxford Thames on the other side – it seems to be more a conference and wedding venue in the middle of nowhere.

    • Tw33ty says:

      Voco Oxford spires is excellent.
Really nice walk along the river just behind the hotel.

The Thames is a lot further away from the town centre.

The staff at the voco spires are amazing too.

Chances Italy will drop the 5 day quarantine requirement on 30th August? Unsurprisingly flights to Venice are really cheap in September….

    • E says:

TheLocal did an analysis of how likely this was (don’t have the link to hand) and it doesn’t look that likely. The UK now has more cases than the last time they extended the quarantine requirement. Simon Calder was also asked (though I know some here don’t rate him but anyway…) and he said he thought the chances were no more than 50/50.

Italy have already given a special dispensation to those from the UK going to Venice for the film festival which is in early September. They need documentation to prove they’re in the film industry and attending the festival. Sort of suggests that they think the quarantine requirement will still be needed for everyone else from the UK.

Italy didn’t issue the extension to the July quarantine into August till late on the 29th July so it may be another few days before we know.

      • Tracy says:

50/50 sounds about right. Have provisionally booked hotel for September and might just take a punt on £5 Ryanair fares 🤞

Help with using Amex Platinum car hire insurance for first time please.

Booked vehicle – comes with third party insurance but asked to pay for optional extra insurance to cover excess liability – I refused the excess liability insurance.

Is this correct to ensure I am covered?
    Thanks

  • JohnT says:

We stayed a couple of years ago. Very pleasant rooms, pool quite small but ok. Nice large grounds by the river. Quite far out of Oxford though.

    Help with Easyjet booking change.
I have an Easyjet booking from BFS to LGW in October for (2 adults + 2 children 13 +11). The children are no longer traveling, but I can change the booking. Is it possible to split the children off and move their flights to next year? Is is possible to have a booking for only a 13 and 11 yo? I would intend to book the adults too but for now was just hoping to avoid losing the value of the 2 return tickets.

    • Yorkieflyer says:

Try it on the full website, it’s certainly possible with adults to move pax separately, I have done this

  • Paul says:

Hi folks, booked a BA Holiday for my partner and I, GLA-LHR-SOF in CE so aiming for 240 tier points. Is there any way in the booking to triple-check it’s eligible for double tier points aside from waiting and seeing if they drop? Thanks!

    • Marie says:

I’ve just booked MAN LHR VIE again in CE as a 5 day holiday and it’s only showing single tier points at present.

      • ChrisC says:

        Please read the T&Cs!

        5. Standard Tier Points for the flight element will be awarded in line with regular awarding timelines after completion of the return flight which is part of a Qualifying Booking. The initial transaction will be updated when the Bonus Tier Points are added to the standard Tier Points, within one month of the return flight which is part of a Qualifying Booking.

    • Harry T says:

Check the terms and conditions, and screenshot them. That’s what I’ve done.

    • Paul says:

Thanks all – read the TSCS and pretty confident, but had hoped there’d be some indicator somewhere in the actual booking.

  • Rupert says:

Not sure if anyone can help..

Travelling from US (GB national) to the UK can I just confirm that I will need to do a lateral flow 72 hours prior to departing and then require a day 2 test booked (double vaccinated in US)

On return to US is a lateral flow enough (chronomics? Or does it need to be in person?
