The HfP chat thread – Tuesday 24th August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Anyone having issues booking Day 2 PCRs with Experts Medical? Is it the end of that line?

    • Hak says:

Well, ordered two which are supposed to turn up tomorrow according to DPD. Guess we will find out!

      • Bigmaggot says:

I haven’t been able to order for the last few days! Did you order yesterday/today?

        • Hak says:

21st I ordered. Let’s hope the darn things turn up.

        • MW says:

I’ve been trying to order the last two days. May need to go with the next cheapest ones (Qured?).

As others are saying, not a huge issue if it doesn’t arrive…

    • Anna says:

I and everyone I know hasn’t had theirs turn up in the past fortnight. DPD website says they haven’t received anything either.

      • ben says:

The one I ordered for my mrs came today (Tuesday).. Ordered it 9 days ago… Mrs got back on Friday.

  • Hak says:

    Chronomics question.

Order the fit to fly test which claim on their website they will be dispatched on August. However, the email sent states they will be dispatched on 1 September (day I am to fly). So, best just waiting and seeing if they are dispatched on 25 August and then charging back via Amex?

    • Reney says:

when you ordered the test, what departure day did you put in? The day you departure the uk or the day you depart FOR the uk? if you put in the latter that would be why, they mean the former. Log back in and change to the former and it will adjust the dispatch date.

  • Bearing up says:

I gather we’re due another review of ‘traffic light’ allocations this week. This issue is the US reviewing its stance on U.K. visitors. There are a great number of UK fans with Ryder Cup tickets anxiously waiting to hear whether they will be allowed in for the match due late September.
I appreciate there may still be time to allow it but in the meantime it’s not looking great.
Plan B and a break somewhere else is looming.
Anyone feeling positive UK fans will be allowed in?

    • Harry T says:

Not feeling positive about travel to the USA any time soon, but it’s very much crystal ball territory.

    • J says:

No chance in my opinion. Next summer at the earliest.

    • Jeff Greene says:

No. Zero chance for me, Clive

    • marcw says:

Does’t look like that’s going to happen.
The USA has put themselves in a cul de sac.

      • Blenz101 says:

And the U.K. going for de facto herd immunity provides an additional road block.

    • Anna says:

The US stance is bizarre and pointless. They are allowing people to enter from Mexico, Colombia, Caribbean islands which are currently on our red list. Florida is still seeing huge numbers of infections and the Hawaiian authorities are begging people not to visit because their hospitals are full.

      • kitten says:

French Polynesia has the same problems. (eg Tahiti). We forget that smaller countries and territories have not had the same access to vaccines so lots of people still dying in holiday paradises especially if visited by people from countries who have had more access to vaccines.

        • Blenz101 says:

Funnily enough I am looking to France as setting the west on a path towards Liberté.

200k people out marching week after week to protest is hopefully just the start of a change in the political environment.

      • Blenz101 says:

Most ‘complete’ border closures are pointless at this stage. If proof of full vaccination, a negative PCR result before departure and potential further testing on arrival isn’t consider sufficient risk mitigation to allow international travellers (when domestic transmission continues anyway) then what will be?!

It’s now a political decision for most countries on their border policy and imposed restrictions. What will the domestic reaction be to any change? In the case of the US who can travel outbound why risk any political capital on letting in foreigners.

Asking people to wait it out in higher risk countries before entering kinda proves the point.

        • TGLoyalty says:

All these Border controls are purely political unless you really do completely shut them down like Aus / NZ, even then there are breakthrough infections.

Living with it should mean getting rid of this pointless traffic light theatre and day 2/8 testing nonsense.
