Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The HfP chat thread – Monday 23rd August

We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

do referral bonuses ever get clawed back if after accepted your friend decides to cancel the card within a few days

  • Graham says:

sorry that should have included amex

  • Char Char says:

Anyone managed to get their IC Rome Bookings refunded for dates before April when its closed?

    • meta says:

Why do you want to cancel? If hotel is closed, you’re perfectly within your rights to request either them moving you to another date or moving you to another comparable hotel.

Hotel is currently not cancelling bookings because they still might open in January 2022 as planned, but are not taking any new bookings until they know more as they don’t want to deal too many cancellations. Given it was such a good deal that won’t come around any time soon, I’d sit tight and not make any firm plans until closer to time.

If you still wish to cancel, you can do it yourself online by clicking cancellation button. Your points will be refunded automatically.

      • Blair says:

Wot meta said. Why do people keep asking this? If you want to cancel, press the button in the app. But why on earth would you not just sit tight for now.

        What meta said!

“The Caleta Hotel (Gibraltar) is to be demolished with plans for it to be replaced by a Hilton Hotel”. Source: gbc.gi

    Excellent news for points redeemers.
HiX, Hilton, and Indigo may all be future options.

    • Tw33ty says:

An Indigo has been dangled for a few years now, it would be a nice addition there.
Will be nice to have a hilton, interesting choice on location for it. Cant see it being a budget hilton hotel round that side.

      • Tracey says:

I can. Definitely the wrong side of the Rock for virtually everything.

  • Nigel W says:

Quick question, what are people’s views of ‘Great Scotland Yard’ hotel in London? Looking at using my Hotels.com voucher and that’s one of the options. (The other’s being Mayfair Townhouse, Cheval Three Quays and the soon to open Pan Pacific.)

    • Blair says:

Very nice. Very classy. You won’t be disappointed.

    • Harry T says:

Stayed in June – I would highly recommend the hotel. The Sherlock Suite was terrific. The whole hotel is gorgeous though. The GM is excellent.

    • Harry T says:

Yes, Rob, I actually managed to burn four of those offers there, as we booked two suites on the healthcare rate. Saved £400 on just over a grand total spend.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Stay after September 17th if you want more F&B choice on site.

Very classy property with some lovely staff.

The whisky bar Sibin looks lovely but sounds like it won’t open for a few months due to Covid.

  • jjh4yb says:

Apologies if I’ve suggested this before, but I was wondering why you don’t seem to mention NatWest & RBS Reward Accounts. It is possible to convert the “Rewards” into Avios amongst other opportunities.

    • The Savage Squirrel says:

It’s because it is officially a “temporary” offer I believe. Temporary in this case measured in years and possibly decades 😆

    • ChrisC says:

Perhaps not many of HfP readers have those accounts or Rob dosent’t want to spend the time researchign and writing for little benefit?

You could start the ball rolling by mentioning how you can convert from those schemes into avios (including any degridation in value)

      • Rob says:

        Three reasons:

        1. Avios asked us not to, because they told us it is a temporary arrangement (albeit one that has proved more permanent than originally planned)
        2. We know it is a temporary arrangement, because of other stuff
        3. For various FCA reasons, it is difficult for us to encourage people to take out a financial product when we know the reason you would take it out is not permanent

    • Toaster says:

What’s the conversion rate? From memory it’s not great so you’re probably better taking the rewards as cash.

  • meta says:

Witnessed today at SSDV pool – one middle-aged male in full-on snorkeling gear including flippers. I sincerely hope it’s not one of HfPers. 😂

  • BuildBackBetter says:

When booking tickets for kids (BA), can we add them to household account and pool their miles earned on cash tickets?
