We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Having not traveled for eighteen months we finally took the plunge and booked flights with Jet2.com ( never used them before always preferred Easyjet but they no longer fly from Newcastle.) last week. We booked a 3.15pm flight to Mallorca, and received the confirmation. Today I decided to put the app on my phone to make things easier.Log into my booking to see flight showing as 6.50am. I have had no notification from them advising of the change. My daughter has checked Twitter ect. and it seems they have cancelled lots of flights today without informing anyone. Anyone else had this, and where do we stand with cancelling and getting a refund. Any thoughts appreciated.!

    • Stuart says:

Looks like some of the Newcastle flights are going via Leeds Bradford too!

      • Sam G says:

Indeed, plenty of Jet2 flights being cancelled or “double dropping” other airports in the UK or EU to combine loads due to half empty flights or just being cancelled altogether.

If your flight number changed then it counts as a cancellation and you can get a refund. Otherwise have to find out if they’ll consider this a significant change and will refund you

        • Mummy55 says:

Thank SamG. Yes flight no has changed. Will book flight with another airline and hope for a refund at some point!

          • Sam G says:

I recently had a jet2 cancelled flight and to be fair to them they auto refunded me very quickly, but my route was cancelled completely. If they’ve rebooked you then they might not do it automatically so might be worth giving them a call – any pushback then remind them it counts as a cancellation under EU 261 as you are flight only

    • Yorkieflyer says:

Despite others positive comments I and friends found Jet2.com rubbish last year for taking your cash then cancelling with 3 and 4 days notice. It’s not even as though they are cheap anymore now they’ve gone for the bucket and spade package tour market. EasyJet generally give you a months notice of changes and Ryanair, bless them, fly through thick and thin in my experience

  • TheInsiderFly says:

Does anyone know if payment to Van guard from W E via Bendy triggers a cash advance or any other jip?

    • Lawro says:

AFAIK – although haven’t tried recently – this has not been an option since April(?) and the payments simply don’t go through. Would be glad to hear otherwise though.

    • Genghis says:

      Doesn’t work

    • Ls says:

Other investment providers, particularly those named after staunch brexiteers, have more luck.

    • Nigel W says:

sadly doesn’t work these days. Although if you have a Tesco Bank Debit Card you can still earn points via VG

    • TheInsiderFly says:

That’s a shame. Thanks all for replies.

  • ukgeorge says:

Does anyone have any recommendations for pre-departure PCR tests? I am based in central London and will, hopefully, be flying to Hungary this coming Sunday from LHR.

  • Tracey says:

Have a BA holiday to Madeira booked. Now that Madeira looks to be turning amber from green, is it safe to assume that BAH won’t automatically cancel? Both double vaccinated, so amber is as good as green in practical terms for us.

    • Harry T says:

I don’t think they will cancel as long as demand remains strong, for trips to an Amber list country. So many Brits are fully vaccinated now that Amber is largely irrelevant, especially considering older folks (not being ageist, just mean people who were vaccinated longer ago) tend to be richer and more likely to be double jabbed.

  • Boi says:

    Asking question for my sister.

I know with flights there is EC law for flight cancellations. Is there something similar for other services?

She booked Sheffield, Manchester and Berlin marathons which were all cancelled/postponed last year. At the time she booked they were all on different dates.

The marathons are now taking place this year and they have all been scheduled for September 26. Obviously she can’t be in 3 places at the same time. All of them are refusing to give her a refund. Saying it is not their fault she can’t attend. Is there anything she can do?

    • Dave says:

How did she pay? Could look at a charge back via bank or credit card.

      • Anna says:

What would she be charging back for? All the services are being provided, albeit on the same day. I think Boi’s sister needs to check the Ts and Cs – I know they are pretty tight for marathons because loads of people apply to run them and they don’t want people cancelling, but there might be more leeway this year due to all the pandemic disruption.
Boi – hope life is good in Canada!

        • Anna says:

And especially that your family is thriving …

          • Anna says:

Could someone else take your sister’s place? As I said, there is huge competition for marathon entries so I’m sure she’d find someone if the regulations allow it.

        • Dave says:

I don’t see how all the services are being provided. Presumably the original bookings was for certain dates and those were cancelled. The cancellation alone should be enough to get a refund. Unreasonable for supplier to expect new dates to be acceptable.

          • ChrisC says:

If the events go ahead then they are being provided.

That you as an individual can’t do any or all isn’t the event organisers fault.

          • SteveJ says:

Surely a date change is not the same event originally booked? Doesn’t sound like the services purchased are being provided (a Marathon on X date)

          • Yorkieflyer says:

Surely a breach of contract so charge back

  • mart says:

I earn over 75k and have a sole barclays avios account. Partner earns less than 75k. What approach can we adopt to open a joint account with 25k bonus avios/monthly avios/upgrade voucher going to her, but my salary going through both accounts?
    Thanks

    • Sloth says:

You don’t need the salary going through both or even one of the accounts. You will be able to open one sole and one joint

      • Sloth says:

Sorry misread your question in that you have a sole account already, but points stands, there will be no reason why you can’t open a joint one

  • VerdantBacon says:

Can someone please recommend a test provider for returning from Malaga? Will be going in a few weeks and trying to understand if it’s better to book some place while in Malaga or to just sort it out now

    • Anna says:

I’m pretty sure there will be plenty of clinics and pharmacies offering tests – have you asked your accommodation provider if they know of anywhere nearby (though be aware they may recommend their in house doctor at a hugely inflated price). Otherwise, forums like Tripadvisor have lots of discussions about this.

      https://travelcovidtestcenter.com/

Actually at the airport. Book the antigen test 3 hours before you flight. Results with 30 mins.

    • Yorkieflyer says:

I would book the like of Qured which can be upto 3,days before returning for peace of mind

  • Youllnever says:

Re. HSBC 25% Avios bonus: does anyone have suggestions as to whether I should do the Avios transfer now for the bonus? My oldest points don’t expire till early 2024 though.

    • Peter K says:

I think you’re unlikely to get a better bonus on the future to Avios. So if collecting them is your ultimate goal then go for it.
You’ll be getting 1p per HSBC point in nectar, worst case scenario.
