Got a British Airways Amex? New spend bonus launched on Monday

American Express has launched a new spend bonus for British Airways American Express Premium Plus and free British Airways American Express cardholders.

It is surprisingly generous, possibly more generous than it needs to be, which is odd but I’m not complaining – especially as I have a hotel bill to pay this week.

British Airways American Express Premium Plus spend bonus

The following has appeared on my British Airways Premium Plus card – click to enlarge.

It is limited to the first 60,000 people to register.

As you can see, I get 10,000 bonus Avios for spending £5,000 by 30th November:

British Airways American Express bonus offer

This is such a decent deal that it is worth paying the 3% foreign exchange commission to settle my hotel bill bill this week. As long as I cap the amount at £5,000, I will be paying £150 in fees to bank 17,500 Avios in total which is fine by me.

(Obviously it would make more sense to do the spending in the UK and not pay any FX fees. However, as per our other article today, I have a similar offer on my Business Platinum card that will keep me busy until mid November once I get home.)

Looking at reader comments, there do not seem to be alternative versions of this offer. It is either ‘10,000 Avios for spending £5,000’ or nothing if you have Premium Plus.

The free BA Amex offer does have different versions

On the free British Airways American Express there are reports of:

  • ‘1,500 Avios for spending £1,000’
  • ‘2,000 Avios for spending £2,000’

….. and that’s it. There are also quite a few reports of people getting nothing, so don’t get your hopes up.

Remember that you need to opt in to these offers via the ‘Offers’ tab on your BA Amex statement page in the app or Amex website. Spending does not count towards your target until you opt in.

For clarity, spending on supplementary cards does not count. Neither does PayPal spend recharged to your Amex.

Same offer of £5K for 10K avios

  • @alastairtravel says:

2000 for £2k spend end of Nov on free card here

  • Lloyd says:

Spend £2000 get 2000 avios on my free ba card.

  • Robert says:

Just saved it to my card thanks, does the 5k spend have to be in one transaction to trigger the bonus 10k avios or can I drip feed the 5k spend up until the offer expiry date?

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

It states it’s cumulative in the offer details on the Amex page. I have a good start today with a big hotel bill due. I’ll probably spend about £4K this month so easy for me to hit

    • stevenhp1987 says:

The offer literally says “cumulatively” in the description…

    • Tom says:

It does not need to be in one transaction. As many transactions as it takes before the deadline.

  • Dylan Jobson says:

10k for 5k here also. Cheers for the tip

  • David Quinn says:

Free card here. 2K for £2000.

  • @mkcol says:

Given it’s a bonus, is it likely any/all the Avios awarded as a bonus be clawed back should a transaction made in the offer period be refunded later?

    • Chrisasaurus says:

IT’s possible, yes – and indeed I hope so because without a deterrent to defraud them, they’ll get abused and won’t be repeated.

    • WaynedP says:

T&Cs clearly state Amex’s intention to clawback on refunds or cancellations.

Plus bonus award reversal and ineligibility from future Amex offers in case of misuse – with Amex having up to 180 days after 30 Nov 2021 to exercise their discretion in this regard.

Fair warning to anyone contemplating taking the Mickey on this one, I guess.

  • @mkcol says:

Also – do AMEX count the time or just the date of the transaction?
And is it transaction date or posting date?

Simply wondering because I made a few large transactions yesterday which are showing pending today.

    • Andrew says:

It will be the date of the transaction – ie yesterday in your case

      • Andrew says:

Which is why you can avail of an offer on the final day, even though it might not clear from pending to billed until after the offer closing date
