Got a British Airways Amex? New spend bonus launched on Monday

American Express has launched a new spend bonus for British Airways American Express Premium Plus and free British Airways American Express cardholders.

It is surprisingly generous, possibly more generous than it needs to be, which is odd but I’m not complaining – especially as I have a hotel bill to pay this week.

British Airways American Express Premium Plus spend bonus

The following has appeared on my British Airways Premium Plus card – click to enlarge.

It is limited to the first 60,000 people to register.

As you can see, I get 10,000 bonus Avios for spending £5,000 by 30th November:

British Airways American Express bonus offer

This is such a decent deal that it is worth paying the 3% foreign exchange commission to settle my hotel bill bill this week. As long as I cap the amount at £5,000, I will be paying £150 in fees to bank 17,500 Avios in total which is fine by me.

(Obviously it would make more sense to do the spending in the UK and not pay any FX fees. However, as per our other article today, I have a similar offer on my Business Platinum card that will keep me busy until mid November once I get home.)

Looking at reader comments, there do not seem to be alternative versions of this offer. It is either ‘10,000 Avios for spending £5,000’ or nothing if you have Premium Plus.

The free BA Amex offer does have different versions

On the free British Airways American Express there are reports of:

  • ‘1,500 Avios for spending £1,000’
  • ‘2,000 Avios for spending £2,000’

….. and that’s it. There are also quite a few reports of people getting nothing, so don’t get your hopes up.

Remember that you need to opt in to these offers via the ‘Offers’ tab on your BA Amex statement page in the app or Amex website. Spending does not count towards your target until you opt in.

For clarity, spending on supplementary cards does not count. Neither does PayPal spend recharged to your Amex.

I didn’t have the offer on my BAPP and was told by Amex they couldn’t add it as it was targeted. Frustrating as I recently paid to upgrade from the blue card.

Worth signing up for this card before fee goes up?
Or waiting for a relaunch bonus?

  • gordon says:

Received a call back from Amex this afternoon and their marketing executive has confirmed that as long as supplementary card holders register they are acceptable for the 10k bonus. They registered my wife and my son manually as they hold supplementary cards on my account.

We are currently in New Zealand, enjoying until last week a fairly covid free existence. We have a new ish BA card and will just manage to make the spend needed for the 2 4 1 voucher in time (Feb next year). We have the current offer but can only reach a £5,000 spend by November by paying FX fees. We plan to return to UK next April and have managed to reach the required spend for the 2 4 1 mainly with airfares, a month’s Air BnB booking and a cruise. We don’t plan on cancelling anything but who knows whether it will all be possible given our currently fast changing world. My question is, if we trigger the current offer by paying FX for NZ expenditure, and then things we have booked previously to get the 2 4 1 get cancelled, will we lose the current deal? EG we got an excellent deal on the AirBnB booking but it’s not just us who can cancel that without penalty, the person offering the accommodation can also do so. And cruising is still a murky area so ours might be cancelled by the cruise line. Just would like to know how it would work before we pay the FX fees unnecessarily.

Both myself and the wife had this offer – “saved to card”. 20k points between us for nothing! So glad for HfP!!!

  • Gary says:

I have quite a big refund to my card due any time, anyone know if this will cause an issue with my spend requirements like it does with voucher qualification? thanks

  • Andy says:

I finally received an email detailing my personal offer. A whopping 100 Avios if I spend £1.
    What is the point?

  • Bob M says:

Logged on this weekend, no sign of the offer. All gone?
