We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Apple Amex offer. I’ve used virgin’s shop away portal, now on amex it comes up as apple uk kiosk. Terms and conditions say i won’t get a credit if i use “payment facilitator”. Is shop away payment facilitator”? No email from Amex about triggered offer. Any idea?

    • David says:

Shops Away has NO effect on how the card transaction looks or appears.
They do not sit in the payment chain in any way. So you don’t need to worry about that bit at all.

    • BuildBackBetter says:

Shop away is not payment facilitator. Give it a few days.

  • Reney says:

Catching up on the previous chats. I saw Harry T got charged for his HSBC WE card. Any other data points? I checked and my statement date is the 13th September, if the annual fee is charged at the statement date, then I won’t know till way after the cooling-off period ends. Not sure I want to keep the card if I have to pay the fee, the maths don’t really work out that well for me. Thoughts?

    • Matt says:

I signed up last week and have been charged the fee already

      • Reney says:

I signed up on the 14th Aug, card arrived on the 17th. So far no charge. Matt did the paper where your card came in say £0 fee?

    • Harry T says:

As an update, I did call up and point out that my letter said the annual fee was £0. They asked me to send them a photo of the letter via email and then checked with a supervisor – apparently they will refund me the annual fee. The chap on the phone said he was informed they have been giving a fee free 12 months since April 8th. Of course, this is potentially incorrect info, as with all CS calls. If you have a letter saying your annual fee is £0, then it’s well worth ringing if you get charged the fee.

      • Reney says:

I have called to ask about this. I get the feeling until a fee has been charge it is a fruitless conversation. They told me to bring the letter into branch to show them. No offer of emailing.

    • Ls says:

I applied last month. Letter with £0 fee, and no fee charged.
If it had been charged i would be phoning them up and asking if, given the letter, they could refund the fee.

    • TheInsiderFly says:

OH signed up in July. Has been charged the fee. Scrambling around trying to find the letter now! Will ring if it says £0.

Question that hopefully someone can help me with.

I’ve got Avios flights booked from Spain back to EDI via LHR, however due to a work issue I need to return to ABZ instead of EDI.

What is the simplest way of doing this? There is Avios availability still on all sectors from what I can see online.

    Thanks

    • GaryE says:

I called BA silver card line the other day, and one of the options was to speak to them re Avios booking. If you try the normal option ‘new booking’ or ‘any other reason’ they fob you off and say you need to speak to the Avios team. They answered the phone in under 5 minutes, and moved my flight to an earlier flight as there was avios availability – so they should be able to do it for you. Otherwise if you cancel you will lose ££ amount from original and have to rebook.

      • Chrism20 says:

Thanks I’ll give them a call and see what they say. I wasn’t sure whether it would be a simple case of cancelling for a voucher and rebooking etc.

        • Ikaz says:

You can rebook if there is availablity (=cancel and book new flights), I don’t think it is possible online currently with avios bookings though

Anyone used C19 testing by Cerulan antigen tests for UK entry .Getting a bit stressed when I hear about Ryanair’s checks .
    Many thank

  • mvcvz says:

Hi – I am currently attempting to book flights on the BA website using an eVoucher (the value of which is greater than the total cost of the flights I’m attempting to book) from a previously cancelled flight. Whenever I enter the voucher code into the relevant box and hit “submit”, the website simply ignores this and continues to seek payment in full from my credit card. I’ve previously used BA eVouchers in this manner via the website with no problems whatsoever. Am I missing something obvious, or is this yet another BA IT glitch? Thanks

PS And yes, the eVoucher is indeed still valid

Morrisons offer – just checking any problems with Amazon GCs? 2 offers ago there were loads of problems on cards not activated, last time was fine. Just wanted to check, I couldn’t see any complaints over the last few days.

    • Toby says:

I’ve done a few from them over the past few months and all have been fine: but always check the receipt when you pay to check they are marked as activated

      • Reney says:

thanks, did a transaction earlier it went fine.

        • Jonathan says:

I’ve got a JL GC with an activation receipt that still didn’t work. The other 5 bought at Morri’s in same transaction have been fine & only realised when I tried to use it last week (5 months after purchase).

CS at JL said it showed as activated on their system then 15mins later it reversed. She’d never seen that happen before but I’ve now got to go and argue with Morrison’s about where my £150 has disappeared to. Fortunately I’ve got all the receipts still.

IHG Ambassador Reward Night voucher update……

So as some of you know, if you search for a hotel using the “Ambassador Reward Night”, you will see hotels come up that are above 40,000 points. If you select one of them, you will often see something like ‘Standard Room: £32 (more or less depending on how many points over 40,000 they are).

Anyway, I took one for the team and called IHG as you cannot go ahead and select this rate. Spoke to an agent who was not too helpful – eventually transferred me to the Ambassador Service Centre. Agent was friendly but clearly could not see what I could see (no fault of his own), so created a case and told me to email in.

I then pulled out the smoking gun. Sat 6th to Sun 7th November, the CP Albert Embankment is 40,000 points (due to dynamic pricing), but is clearly coded to a legacy category number that is higher than what the free night voucher can allow – remember, dynamic pricing works both ways 😉

Anyway, within a minute, he simply offered to swap that voucher for 40,000 points. As easy as that and they are in my account with the voucher showing as redeemed. YMMV – but it is worth a shot to cash out a time and points limited voucher to points. I purchased Ambassador status with 40,000 points so I am a very happy chappy!

Maybe we will see in the months to come this Voucher + Cash element, but clearly it isn’t there just yet!

    • Anna says:

I’m not sure what you mean – are you saying the IHG website has been tweaked to stop people using these vouchers in certain hotels?

  • Toby says:

Interesting: Hotels.com offering 15% off Qured covid tests: https://uk.hotels.com/page/covid19testdiscounts/. I think this is no more competitive than BA’s discount, but might be worth keeping an eye on

    • PJJ says:

Noticed on the hotels.com app about their Credit Card but US only

Any news if coming to the UK ?
