We are running this daily chat thread on Head for Points during the coronavirus outbreak.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the de facto repository for random comments and questions.  With the news flow being lighter, we are running fewer ‘Bits’ articles.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are at home, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as it keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

Old chat threads are hidden from the HfP home page.  If you want to look for something in an old thread, click here.  This brings up all the articles in our ‘General’ category which includes the chat threads.

Question about upgrade using avios (UUA) on an existing rewards reservation? As one leg of a reward booking was cancelled by BA, we have been asked to rebook. However this doesn’t allow me to change the cabin class. Is it possible to use avios to upgrade the cabin on one leg of an existing rewar booking? Reward seats are available in the higher class. Lastly, when is a “good” time to call BA?!

    • KP says:

You cant use avios to upgrade a rewards booking. You can do a cash upgrade if the option is there

    • Sam G says:

It’s not a UUA in this scenario it’s just a straight forward change up to the higher cabin & pay the difference in Avios/taxes. If you call in (dead on 8am seems best!) they can do it

  • KP says:

Just applied for BA e-voucher. Cancelled the booking and received voucher in under 5min. Impressed

    New targetted Barclaycard Freebie:-

“We’re excited to bring you more to enjoy, with free access to four Apple subscriptions for up to five months. T&Cs apply.*”

The offers are on Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple News and Apple Arcade.

    • Nick says:

Also just had that. Doesn’t apply if you currently subscribe… any guesses for how long you’d need to be ‘out’ before it kicks in? Wonder if it’s worth cancelling Music for a month and then getting it free through the offer…

Ps: Used collinson in person covid testing. Went to o2 site yesterday morning for PCR test. Received results this morning. Very efficient and easy. £66 pp using BA discount. Recommended where you dont want hassle of postage etc for pre departure testing

  • Dubious says:

Got an email from BA just now offering 4x the usual value of Avios when used for Part-Payment.

“That’s because, with Avios part payment, you can reduce the cost of a British Airways flight. Even better, for this weekend only your Avios could be worth up to four times more than usual, meaning that somewhere faraway just got a lot closer.

Book before midnight Monday 23 August 2021 to take advantage of various savings options on one-way and return flights in any cabin. These range from exchanging 250 Avios for £5 off per person on a one-way or return flight, up to a maximum of 5,000 Avios to save £100 on a return flight”.

    • Dubious says:

I don’t have any bookings to make right now but might want to check you emails in case you got something simliar.

    • Robert says:

At 0.5p/Avios, how is this “up to 4 times more than usual? Do the really offer as little as 0.125p/Avios value for some Cash+Avios deals?? Also, 0.5p/Avios off a flight, or 0.8p for Nectar (Sainsbury’s, Argos)… I know what I’d be doing

      • Harry T says:

Your maths isn’t very robust there, friend…

      • Andrew says:

At 250 Avios being worth £5 off a flight, I make that as an Avios as being worth tuppence.

      • VerdantBacon says:

Not really sure how you arrived at your figures, but if you wish to calculate how much multiples of something costs, you divide the cost by the total number of the something.
        So £100 / 5000 Avios = £0.02 per Avios

Flights to Larnaca in September with BA have been also changed like August to 787 Jet. Flat bed all the way !!!

    • Richie says:

Interesting that the B788 is being deployed on some former B767 SH routes. Will we see the oldest B788s refitted with new CS, or a SH sub fleet?

  • DMW says:

BA has cancelled my flight and booked me on another day that doesn’t work for me (it was booked with avios). Am I right in thinking if I click ‘refund’ online I’ll get full taxes/fees and all avios back? Or is it a trick and I’ll end up with some kind of voucher?

    • PaulH says:

…. you will get the avios put back straight away and the refund for taxes/fees will follow in around 7 days.. so no not a trick

  • Grimz says:

Is this right from BA – I just called to rebook a cancelled flight and got told because it was the 2nd change (none my fault) that my option of booking 1yr from flight outbound was not valid as its only valid on new bookings.

    • Richie says:

It’s a 261 requirement, nowt to do with BA’s made up policies.

    • Lady London says:

and if we’re talking EU261 which overrides any of BA’s rules or to and cs, strictly speaking there is no limitation of time. (But of course, be reasonable.)

I’d suggest you HUACA a time or two more.
